Wow, Tron Legacy is probably the best looking and sounding Blu-ray I've ever seen. Watched the movie tonight and am glad I picked it up, as I enjoyed it much more this time around! Demo worthy Blu-ray for sure!

Re: TRON: LEGACY DVD/Blu Combo Pack >> 04/2011 (?)

I commented to a friend last night while watching the Tron: Legacy Blu-ray that this was THE new reference disc. The picture quality is just absolutely stunning and the sound is off the charts. Excellent! However, the supreme image quality made the CGI Kevin Flynn at the beginning of the movie and CLU look even worse. I found it extremely irritating every time those characters were on screen. Considering how first-rate the rest of the special effects were, they did a REALLY bad job on that.

Anyone try the second screen feature? I found it to be pretty cool. It has too much concept art and storyboards but some of the annotations, FX, and on set footage is cool. You can play around with different phases of FX work or check out 360 models and sets. You can explore it on your own too. It will be a great feature when they refine it more.

Same problem with me. Ordered from Amazon and it doesn't light up. There is no "tab" to keep the batteries from working, so it's either bad batteries or just plain broken.

Well... CLU is a digital person, so if he looks CGI... perfect.

Yeah, CLU looked great, when he didn't talk. Once the mouth moved the illusion was totally shattered.

Except all of the other digital people looked like real people, lol.

Haha yeah, it was only when his mouth moved, one of the serious limitations of motion capture I think. The de-aging looked perfect when he kept his mouth shut.

Re: TRON: LEGACY DVD/Blu Combo Pack >> 04/2011 (?)

There were some instances with Clu moving about and even speaking that looked spot on. Unfortunately, they were interspersed amidst the more frequent "rubbery" moments. Still, it was a very well crafted effect and makes me wonder how long before they finally get it as close to 100% right as possible.

Eh, after seeing what they did with Brad Pitt in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, CLU isn't all that impressive.

Re: TRON: LEGACY DVD/Blu Combo Pack >> 04/2011 (?)

With the young Brad Pitt they hid him in shadows a lot. It looked better than CLU but they knew how to present Pitt.

I was using that second screen mode, and playing around with an FX progression of CLU and the initial texture-less model they took from the Bridges face scan looked much better than the final version. I think they messed around with making him look younger too much. They removed too much muscle work or something. The younger Alan Bradley/Tron, in the few glimpses we got, looked phenomenal though.

I think they should have stuck with the "projected" face on the helmet look from the promo trailer. That looked more realistic to me.

Not really. It just looked pasted on. In fact, look at the first documentary. In it they show the full ComiCon trailer. The effect was criticized when the video was first released online and it looks worse now.

As was stated earlier, Clu looked fine for the most part. Even emoting. It's when he would speak that the effect didn't look right. The mouth movements were off.

Sure, the early version had it's problems too. I should have been more clear. My point was that if they couldn't get the route they went perfect they should have kept the "projected" design and perfected that.

I also felt that Clu appeared "thicker/fatter" in the face than Bridges ever was in the original or in 1989.

But whatever, I really enjoyed the movie and the Clu effect wasn't perfect but it didn't bother me at all.

Okay, now I gotcha. Unfortunately, given how much time and money was already spent on the finished Clu, the "projected" version would have ended up worse than the finished version had it been pursued as a last minute replacement.

In a couple of shots Clu looked more like Beau Bridges. But that was due to the angle, lighting, and the way the brow was raised in the particular shots.

I thought the same thing, until I closely watched more of the real Bridges. He just looks weird when speaking. Maybe the capture worked too well.

Just watched and really enjoyed this. One thing though... what's up with that city shot at the end? It looks fake/cg.... is it supposed to mean anything or is it just a really bad shot?

Yeah, I noticed that when I watched it again today. The real Bridges has a weird way of moving his lips when he talks. So I guess Clu wasn't so off in that department afterall.

It looks like CGI only not at the same time. I think they just tried to tweak the shot for whatever reason but kinda halfassed it and that's why it looks so weird.

That doesn't explain the CGI for Flynn at the beginning of the film looking horrible.

I wouldn't say they did a bad job. They did the best job that is humanly possible at this moment in time. It's just that this kind of effect falls into the "uncanny valley" and it is very hard to fool the audiences' instinctual ability to pick up on "problems" regarding facial characteristics and human movement. We'll believe the Falcon can fly through and asteroid field but a SFX human face sets off "something" in us. Our brains are just super sensitive to it. I applaud them for trying.

I still say CLU in the leather looks pretty good (good enough, anyway); CLU in the jacket or Flynn in flashbacks looks uniformly terrible.
