SDS signs deal with Fred Meyer and GameStop to carry movies.

No Fred Meyer here, but will go into Gamestop if they at least get the new releases. Haven’t bought games in ages so would be good for them.

According to the story, it will be 170 GameStop stores and online. So your local store may not be one that carries them. My guess is they will look at stores with high sales.

At this point most decreases in sales have to be blamed on the decreasing retail support. You’ve all seen how many movies I have, and most of them were impulse buys at stores. Haven’t made any impulse buys in a few years now because there just haven’t been any. I’ve had to order most stuff online which I hate doing (and my latest package with the new Pet Shop Boys audio Blu-Ray and CD was STOLEN when left outside my apartment!)

Gamestop is still around? I think all of the ones around me have closed.

This is probably a bigger boost for GameStop than it is a boost for 4K. But I'm sure it can't hurt anything.

I'm sure this news will help shoot the meme-stock hero company into the stratosphere! Apparently the stock has risen 60% in May.

Who knew the true power of physical media was lurking under the surface of a dysfunctional economy?

GameStop has dipped in and out of selling used DVDs over the years, is this the first time they'll be selling new product? If they do Pro member discounts, we may pay for that again.

There's one in the strip mall around the corner from me. I pop in once in a while exclusively to buy Roblox gift cards for my kids. (I prefer to use physical gift cards for this purpose rather than buy their stupid Robux digitally because I intentionally want this to be an inconvenience for the children, so they know they can't harass me for it more often.)

If they do their media like they do the "new" games (after paying they open them in front of you before bagging them) they can forget it. I complained about them opening games and refuse to purchase new games from them for that practice.

The selection online is pretty thin. Surprisingly, the prices are fairly competitive! Not great but not MSRP either. Except for Ghost in the Shell; no idea what the story is there.

I never actually went to a MovieStop when that was a thing.

There's still a ton of GameStops around the Chicago suburbs, even after they closed a bunch.

As long as they're factory sealed and all that, if the price is right I'll buy there.

For those not paying attention to Wall Street, GameStop's stock (GME) has been the focus of an intense stock manipulation war for a couple years now. Most retail-owned individual shares (think regular brokerage accounts) and one of the most shorted stocks by hedge funds/mutual funds.

Today's movement in GME had to do with the return of Roaring Kitty to Twitter (no joke), nothing to do with the announcement they are carrying 4K discs.

The absolute totals must be in bad shape if DVD is getting that kind of percentage. Looks like some older people never got around upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray and have checked out on the hardware cycle completely. If they aren't into streaming by now, doubt they'll ever make the transition.

Believe it or not, lots of people never made the jump from DVD to blu-ray.

Yep, many people just don't care.

I was at my cousin's a couple days ago and they had the TV on and I noticed the picture quality wasn't very good. So I picked up the remote and noticed they were watching an SD channel instead of the HD equivalent one. The family was always watching shows where all the SD channels were located instead of where their respective HD channels were. No one seemed to notice or care.

Release high profile titles on 4K disc (and highly coveted cult films) and they will come. Killer Clowns From Outerspace on 4K was the #2 best selling title of the week behind Dune Part 2.

Killer Klowns was the #2 best-selling title on ALL formats combined or just 4k? Either way that shows where the market has headed. Early on the DVD sales charts had stuff like Monty Python and the Holy Grail in the top 10 but it eventually moved to new Disney releases and stuff that had dominated the VHS charts, though I at least don’t remember exercise titles and crap like that showing up much.

#6 overall. The #1, #2, and #5 spots belonged to Dune. Imaginary and The Beekeeper round out the top 5.

We're nearing sales levels when it won't be profitable for a Hollywood studio to release anything on UHD other than the biggest blockbusters in select genres.
