If there WAS room on those bonus discs (and I'm not sure there is...they're pretty packed), I'd agree that there's no reason not to include some stuff from prior releases. But adding discs to this set to accomodate those bonus materials, and thus driving up the price of the set? No - as I said, I don't want to pay for stuff I already own, with the exception of materials that would have possibly been upgraded to 1080p if added.

I watched Empire on my PS3 Slim tonight. I noticed once I loaded the disc, I heard a humming sound, like the disc was spinning much faster than normal. Once I got to the menu screen, it went away and sounded like it was spinning at the normal rate. I loaded A New Hope after I was done and it was silent the entire time it went to the menu screen.

Empire played fine and stayed quiet throughout the entire film. Anyone else ever get that humming/fast spinning type of noise?

Sometimes my Sony laptop will spin a disc very fast and it makes a humming like sound, so I don't know if it's a Sony thing or not.

^ I get that with my PS3 (pfat) all the time. Spins v. fast until the disc menu loads. I'm surprised you never noticed it before.

This was playing on the new PS3 Slim, the 3001 model. Supposed to be quieter, cooler, etc. So I wasn't expecting to hear a humming sound. I have an older Slim as well. I put Empire in it and it seemed to do the same thing. I don't know why A New Hope is silent, but Empire isn't. Not a big deal anyways.

I don't have the greatest hearing, and I was sitting up closer to watch Empire tonight.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. The first DVD boxset came out in 2004, I bought it release day. If I were inclined to buy this Blu set, and it had all the extras from that 2004 release, I would be cool with that, happy with that in fact. That means I could sell off the old set for a few bucks, or pass it on to a relative that doesn't have release. Like I said before, there's an entire thread in this section dedicated to cataloging missing extras that weren't brought over from the previous DVD to the Bluray. It has a *lot* of posts in it, it's obviously a big deal.

Now, going back to the days when a studio would release a barebones DVD, then Surprise! release a loaded special edition 6 months later: yeah, I would regret that bare bones release. But optical formats are pretty much archive formats by default. It's just frustrating to not have things carried over at this point.

Sorry, you're simply wrong.

For T2, it was released in theatrical cut on LD, and then later the Special Edition cut. On DVD, it was first issued in the theatrical cut, and then the Ultimate and Extreme editions which had all 3 cuts available. On Blu-ray, it was first released with just the theatrical cut, and then later with the Skynet Edition all 3 cuts.

For the Abyss, it was first released in theatrical on LD, and then later released with the Special Edition cut. On DVD, for its only issuance, it was released with both cuts.

For Aliens, it was first released in its theatrical cut on LD, and then later the Special Edition cut. On DVD, it was first released in the Special Edition cut only on the Alien Legacy set, but later with both cuts on the Alien Quadrilogy set. On Blu-ray, it again has both cuts on the Alien Anthology.

So, in fact, out of those movies you cited, only Aliens was unavailable in its original theatrical cut on DVD, during the 4-year period between the release of Alien Legacy and Alien Quadrilogy.

Just saw Ep IV.

WOW! 2,800+ posts, several in-depth reviews and no one mentions every blaster shot making a huge hot pink flash across the screen every time? And few posters and reviews that do mention it, they don't mention it as a BAD thing?

I'm jumping on the bandwagon here. ENOUGH Lucas!!! He's gone too far. Just give us the damn originals.

He'd probably get more sales if he did that. Everyone I mentioned this set to asked me if he was including the original versions on there. Everyone.

I'm pretty sure someone did a disc info scan (either in this thread or at Blu-Ray.com) and there's plenty of space on the discs for all the extra material -- it's four standard DVDs worth of space we're talking about, which should easily fit somewhere on the nine Blu-Ray discs in this set. Personally, I don't need to see extra material in HD, excepting deleted scenes and features that would specifically benefit from it (in this case, the 360 degree prop turnarounds are a good example).

Not quite. They could have carried over all the previous DVD extras on one BD-50, therefore, not a 15 disc set. LOL at 15 discs. Those past DVD's have 46GB of material. One extra disc is all it would take. Expecting 10 discs instead of 9 on a Star Wars release? Shocking. Not too much to ask.

The spoofs doc has a lot of material that's not even HD. It's just being upconverted. Having that doc in standard definition would have allowed "From Star Wars to Jedi" and the extras from the three LD sets to fit on the existing disc 9.

People want the old stuff to carry over to another format because they don't want to hang onto dead formats like LD and VHS, and dying formats like DVD, nor should they have to.

You call it whining and bitching. I call it people expressing a very reasonable criticism of the set.

I disagree. I think the fact that those sets carried over everything from the previous format makes them superior, at least in that respect. Although, I don't think the way they handled it with the LOTR release was what anyone had in mind.

Carrying over extras from a previous Blu-ray release would be double-dipping. Carrying over extras from dead formats like VHS and LD, and dying formats like DVD, is reasonable, shows consideration for the fans, and should be expected. When you consider the massive SD storage capacity on a single Blu-ray disc, it should be standard practice, especially in the case of Lucasfilm, as they own those extras and they don't require new transfers. I don't think people should be expected to have to hang onto dead formats just to be able to view previous special features.




Exactly. Considering that one additional BD-50 would've done the trick, we would have received all the extras currently included in the set in addition to the previous extras. It's not like people would be left with the choice of these new extras or the old. We could have and should have got both. 10 discs instead of the current 9.

It would have taken only one additional disc, a BD-50, to include all the previous DVD extras as that's less than 46GB of material. I'm fine with studios choosing not to carry over previously SD extras in HD. I don't expect any studio to spring for the cost of a new HD transfer on an older bonus feature. SD is fine for the older stuff, in my opinion.

Considering that all of those extras are owned by Lucasfilm and are recent DVD releases, thus not requiring new transfers, the price increase would have been minimal. Probably $10 or less. Consider that we're getting 9 discs for $90 or less. A 10th disc would have minimally affected the price.

I don't think Disc 9 is filled to capacity either. The Spoofs doc is in HD yet most of the spoofs aren't HD. They're just upconverted and some look You Tube quality. Putting that doc on the disc in SD like 5 of the other docs would have opened up more space. This would have allowed the 4 hours worth of "From Star Wars to Jedi" and the three sets of LD extras to fit on Disc 9. 4 hours of SD material would take less than 9GB of space. We would have then had everything previously released to date.

I still shake my head at nearly three hours of spoofs and fans in costumes at the expense of "From Star Wars to Jedi" and other previous special features.

Technically, it didn't go to Lucas. If he bought it from a store like Target or Wal-Mart then they gave their money to Lucas. So, the 90 bucks only went to the store, which doesn't sound nearly as bad.
