Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)
I am shocked that no one has mentioned this yet but there is a huge cross promotion (well not really, but it would be so cool if it was an actual cross promotion thing) with Huey Lewis and The News - The Power Of Love being one of the 83 on-disc songs for Rock Band 3 which also comes out on October 26th! It's seems to be the main song they are using to promote the game, at E3 they used it to kick off their booth presentation (I wasn't there but I think they played it ad-nauseum [pretty sure I spelled that wrong, sorry] every half hour/hour, all day, for 3 days straight, which for any song no matter how good it is I imagine them not wanting want to even hear it ever again now after playing it that much) and it's featured in quite a few of the RB3 promo videos that are out there. But yeah unfortunately Paramount being the closest related movie studio to Rock Band 3 and Universal probably only related to whatever Universal music (which I dunno anything about music labels so someone who does please chime in - but isn't it BMI or EMI now?) shows up in the Rock Band Platform I don't think we'll be seeing any BTTF logos or references anywhere in the game, such a missed opportunity for a few cool surprises to discover on October 26th (or when you can actually get around to playing RB3 if your priority is watching the BTTF Trilogy first). And on the flipside of that they could have totally put a "Play the hit song from BTTF now in Rock Band 3!" type ad on one of the discs in the Blu-ray box set if was an actual cross promotion.

Kind of like that episode of Fringe where in the alternate universe the Observers walk out of a movie theater that's playing "Back to the Future" starring Eric Stoltz. I thought that was awesome that they put that in there.

I love the apparent misdirection in the commercial. "Plus brand new interviews with the cast and crew," "from Director Robert Zemeckis and Producer Steven Speilberg...Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly..." They go from the bonus features right into the credits without skipping a beat.
Definitely makes it sound like there are new interviews with Zemeckis, Speilberg and Fox. I wonder if that is actually the case.

Furthermore, the Viacom/MTV association has never really had any positive or negative effect on other corporate entities finding their way onto the platform. There are companies who stayed away for a long time, Warner Bros. did for a while before they actually published "Lego Rock Band" and made available their entire Green Day catalog for the games, but regardless the whole Viacom/Universal thing is a non-issue, especially considering the fact that the song is probably not even owned by Universal in the first place. I can't be bothered to look up Huey Lewis's record label in the 80's or what conglomerate owns their catalog in 2010 but I wouldn't assume it's Universal just because BttF is Universal.
Ultimately I think it's a coincidence. I'm not holding my breath for any sort of cross-promotion. I think they picked the song because it should be fun to play on keyboards just like they picked "Ghostbusters" because it was kid-friendly for "Lego Rock Band" and in this case both products just happened to land on the same release date.

Personally, I love the "old" look and feeling. That's what gives these movies character. I don't like it when everything just looks so shiny and super slick and new. Like a video game. It loses something. Probably why I am almost never impressed with most of today's movies.

Bob Gale: Back to the Future Blu-ray Looks “Breathtaking”

During an interview on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future, Bob Gale, BTTF creator, producer and co-writer, said he had seen the movie projected days ago and he thought "it looks so good, so much better than it did in 1985", when it opened in theaters.
He further explained: "When they did the remastering for the Blu-ray they spent over 400 hours doing dirt cleanup, and almost another 200 hours doing color correction, so the movie looks better than it ever did." When a film is shown at the theater, "you have the print going through the projector, it picks up dirt, gets scratched and with the digital technology these guys fixed almost all of that stuff, and it just looks breathtaking."

I just did the currency conversion for the set at Amazon UK, and it's $20 ($70 in UK vs. $50 for US boxset ) more for the tin with the goodies.
If I was to decide to spend the extra money and import the UK version, will I be able to watch the extras and utilize the BD-Live features or would it be just the movies I can watch?

Hmm, sounds kinda cool, but I don't want to wait around for it to come, so I'll probably just stick with getting it on the day of release.

I have the Japanese set so it will make a nice collection.

No, no! Please don't take my comment seriously. I really hope and expect these BD transfers to look great, being such high profile titles. But Universal has a "mixed" track record, to put it politely.

ack urk ugh argh.
There's no way the UK set is a perfect purchase because I'm sure some of the extras will be in SD and therefore PAL. I think I'll have to buy the UK and US sets and resell the UK Blus. But there's no way I'm skipping that set.

They may be in SD but surely the fact that they are on a BD makes them non PAL/NTSC?

Very nice, I'm glad I ordered a copy. Why does the US hardly ever seem to get things like this? The movie originated here after all and has a pretty big fan base. I don't really understand it. It seems the only studio that ever does elaborate editions now and then is WB (with releases like Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, The Goonies, etc.)..
