So someone on Blu-ray.com is reporting that Amazon is shipping this in new packaging with standard digipak disc holders rather than the old, crappy ones. Luckily(?) my copy I received from Amazon a few days back came pre-damaged, so they're shipping me a new one. Hopefully it will be in this new packaging. It's supposed to be just slightly taller and thicker to accommodate for the digipak. No pictures posted just yet.

Interesting! All of the clips snapped while trying to get all the discs out, pisses me off!

Love to see pictures of the new set. Backlash must have been huge for Universal to switch to a different style since the current crappy one was done to save some money.

I'm getting it for Christmas. I'm sure I'll end up with the crap packaging. Maybe if the new packaging is available after Christmas I'll do an exchange. "I'm exchanging your gift to get the same thing in a different box." Sounds a little OCD doesn't it?

There are some comparison pics in the BTTF thread over at blu-ray.com...the best way to describe the two would be like comparing The Office Season 5 to Season 6 (with the original BTTF packaging being Season 6, and the new BTTF packaging being like Season 5 was).....

Really? I can't find the pictures in that thread at all. Ugh. Maybe we're looking at different threads?

Nevermind, I dug back a few pages and found some. Here they are:

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

someone at blu-ray.com made custom covers for BTTF for each movie. Anybody know how to print custom covers? I tried it on my printer and they didn't come out right. I know I can download a program but that doesnt work on a Mac. Someone said I can take it to Staples/Office Depot and they can print it out for me. If I do that how do I tell them to print them out for me?

WOuld be great if Universal offered new packaging to people who bought BTTF...since it's like 45 days old.

If it's not the framing, it's the packaging. BTTF and new formats....how do they do it?!

I was wondering the same thing. Universal was willing to mail the redone packaging for the complete Battlestar Galactica series on blu-ray to people who bought it last year.

Looks like the new one is non-embossed.

It's too bad the newer packaging is bigger, but at least it's somewhat functional now. I'm still waiting...

I hate the new bigger packaging. Glad I have the slimmer one. I'll re-buy the set again after the digital copies get thrown out and the set slims down again.

I'm fine with the current packaging... because I can read, and can therefore extract the discs as you are supposed to without any unnecessary force or breaking something off.

I want the newer packaging but I hate the big UPC on the back, I want to take that off but I am afraid it will be sticky if I take it off!

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

Well, I thought I'd ask Universal about a replacement packaging program anyways. The answer was no:

Dear Britton,

Thank you for contacting us.

No plans have been announced for a replacement packaging program for 'Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy."

We appreciate your patronage and hope that you will continue to enjoy Universal products.

Sincerely,

Consumer Relations

The packaging still sucks.

Look Universal. I don't need anything extravagant. I'm easy to please. Throw it in a three-disc Vortex case and let's call it a day. You don't even need a slipcover, that's how easy I am.

Matthew Chmiel: So easy, you don't even need to wear a slipcover.

It's not as simple as that though. Some are far more brittle than others. Mine came pre-broken, still in the shrinkwrap.

For the price they were originally charging, how much money did they really save by not including the little plastic hubs?

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

I feel a great deal of pride in my mastering the usage of the original packaging so I guess I can live with it for now since the new case isn’t much more appealing. What I am really holding out for is individual releases of the films in separate blu-ray cases. I wish studios doing box sets would do all of them like the Shrek series: Individual, standard-sized BR cases for each title inside a decent slip cover. On the bright side, at least blu-ray discs are scratch-proof. I can’t imagine having the original packaging for regular DVDs…
