Phew! Only $500 to listen to audio.

I'll wait 'til Onkyo or Denon release one.

Glasses and hardware that support the 3D technology on both the TV and Blu-ray player. You can try to contact your manufacturer if you can just do an add-on, but chances are most of us will have to purchase a new TV/Blu-ray player to support this. Although supposedly PS3 will be able to support with a software update (?).

Ask SuprMallet as he has a Mitsubishi and needs to buy the add-on. Actually, my mom's TV does as well (72" Diamond I think), but she has zero interest in 3D. She can barely figure out how to use the DVR.

The PS3 Slim at the Sony Style store was playing 3D. I think they just released the update, but there is no software (or hardware) that takes advantage of it. I think it's also of lesser quality compared to a BD player with 3D. Someone really needs to do a simple FAQ.

Not yet (at least none that has been made publicly available) but soon. Last I read the PS3 is getting two updates. The first is for games (which Sony claims most are already compatible but I'm sure each game will require a minor update of their own to assign a second "camera") and later down the road it'll get an update for 3D movies.

I don't remember you complaining when WB released multiple editions of Watchmen. Studios double dip all the time. I don't see why this is worse just because the second edition will have 3D.

Agreed.

It's just an SE release and one of the special features happens to be a 3D version of the movie. I see no problem here.

Plus, like Watchmen, you know that there is another better version coming before you pony up the dough for the first version.

Some people will complain about anything.

That's too bad. Whether you end up liking the movie or not is a crap shoot, but it really is a movie that needs to be experienced at least once in a good theater and in 3D.

Not saying the info from Cameron is wrong (non-Tuesday release), but I'll be waiting until an official announcement before I pencil this into my weekly "upcoming titles" lists.

And all of that was explained in the link in the original post. April 22 is Earth Day, which is why it was chosen.

So, what will the aspect ratio be on this? Theatrically, it was generally 2.35:1 in 2D or 1.78:1 in 3D, but it depended on the theater. I wonder if they'll just make the initial release 2.35:1 and the 3D version 1.78:1.

The link in the original post has been updated with the following info:

[UPDATE: A spokesman for Fox Home Entertainment said on Thursday night that the "3-D is in the conceptual stage and 'Avatar' will not be out on 3-D Blu-ray in November."]
So ... looks like no 3D release in November (probably 2011 then). I wonder if they're going to keep the same 04/22 release date for 2D.

Watchmen is nothing like Avatar. The original Watchmen release was a 3 Disc BD set (2 BD + DC) that was packed with Special Features (and at an impressive $19.99 or less). The UE edition included the Theatrical Cut and some lame Digital comic book BD that was already available on the format along with likely some other minor extras. Anyone who bought the first edition of Watchmen had a fairly complete package. The current Avatar setup gives first time buyers just the movie. Then, 6 months later, they can buy the complete package with likely a higher price tag with Special Features and for many a copy of the film they won't be able to watch on their current setup.

It's all rainbows and gumdrops for you because you're 3D-ready. Very few other people are, or plan on doing so anytime in the near future. If they wanna do a 3D version fine, go for it. Just don't screw over the already niche Blu-ray customer base you have.

Atleast Fox didn't pull the dick move and announce the 3D version of a film (Cloudy...) 2 weeks after it's BD release (at least that BD was a 'complete' package).

The UE of Watchmen was a different cut from the first release. I think that's a pretty big difference, if you're a Watchmen fan.

Which makes total sense to me, because I think in general the movie-going population falls into two segments: Those who want just the movie, and those who want the movie and more. This is actually better than Watchmen, because those of us who want more than the movie don't have to buy two releases due to different bonus content being available on each release. Unlike Watchmen, where, as you said, the UE actually had less features, but did have things that a Watchmen fan would want. That same Watchmen fan also wouldn't want to give up the features on the DC, and thus would have to buy both.

First, Fox seems to have announced no 3D for Avatar in 2010, so your argument is already moot. However, for the umpteenth time, the version that most people can't play will play on their home theater setups right now in 2D. This isn't a DTS situation where if your receiver didn't have the ability to decode it, all you could get was DD 2.0. If your setup can't play 3D, you still get a pristine 1080p image. The only possible difference from a regular SE would be the price, and I'm willing to bet any one of us would be able to find a good deal on an SE of Avatar from one of the many dozens of vendors we all check regularly.

So, again, what is the issue?

P.S. My life is always gumdrops and rainbows. And don't you forget it!

I think I would be pissed if I was a theather owner, in all likelihood this will still be playing in theaters at this time. People may decide not to go/go again if the DVD is only 2 months out.

Sure, a Theatrical Cut, but the first BD was loaded. The first Avatar is barebones.

So why not offer up a packed Avatar BD now and a packed Avatar 3D BD in the future? 3D Fans will buy the 3D version. But Fox wants people to buy the 2D version now, and upgrade to the 3D version later on even if they can't play 3D but want Special Features. There is a way to get people to buy 3D, and releasing a barebones 2D version is not it.

It'll come out in November when the Alien set hits. You have doubts that Fox won't release this gigantic movie in 3D this year? All the CEs are counting on it. I'm aware the 2D version will still play on the 3D Disc, but that still does negate the fact the 2D only release is barebones.

P.S. My life is always gumdrops and rainbows. And don't you forget it!
BS. I don't believe it!

I wonder if Avatar might be that rare movie that continues to play on a small number of screens even after the DVD/BD release. Seeing it at home in on a TV in 2D will not be the same as 3D on the big screen and there might be enough fans to keep some theatrical showings going. With a Box Office take of $2.389 billion, this movie isn't exactly typical.

No, the theatrical cut of Watchmen is not available on Blu-ray Disc in the USA....
The Ultimate Edition BD release of Watchmen has an "ultimate cut" of the film with the animated "Tales Of The Black Freighter" short interspersed within it, not the theatrical cut....
