I will likely just be getting the 2D version. I too am not buying into the hype (yet) for 3D home entertainment systems.

FYI, April 22nd is a Thursday.....

June 22nd is a Tuesday.

Not saying the info from Cameron is wrong (non-Tuesday release), but I'll be waiting until an official announcement before I pencil this into my weekly "upcoming titles" lists.

...and count me in for the first release now and then putting the SE on my Christmas wish list.

If you don't know, it likely isn't (as it stands only some Mitsubishi's are and require a $100 add-on to make them 3D).

As with any screen size in home theater, it depends on how far from the screen you sit.

Don't sell home 3D short: FWIW, there was a report from the CES last month by an IGN reporter who said that he was very impressed:

CES 2010: Avatar 3D vs. Avatar 3D
Which fares better: the theatrical or Blu-ray 3D version?

The potential is for home 3D presentations to be very good, for those willing to buy the necessary equipment. But I can't imagine more than a tiny minority of HT fans doing so over the next few years. Perhaps in 5 years or so, "3D ready" HDTVs and 3D capable BD players will become standard. We shall see.

In the case of Avatar, I think it will lose much of its appeal on (2D) Blu-ray Disc. I'll pass on buying it for now.

I watched 3D on a 40ish Sony Bravia a few days ago and it looked 3D to me. Sure, it would have been nicer had it been bigger, but still looked 3D.

For everyone who says they won't buy the 3D version, you do know that it's quite likely that there will be only one special edition, and that the special edition will be 3D (although that will be backwards compatible for 2D). So if you want the special features (and for this movie, who wouldn't?), you'll have to get the version that includes 3D.

You mean we have to buy the more expensive version to get the Special Features? I'm shocked!

I'm sure it will look 3D on any TV size, but for me, the point of 3D is to help become more immersed in the movie. That is why i wanted to see Avatar in 3D at the theater. So while it might still look 3D when viewed on a 20" TV, to me it isn't worth the expense or having to wear the 3D glasses.

Now on a larger screen with projector, then it might be worth it.

Watching Avatar in 2D is about as bad as watching Lawrence of Arabia in 4:3. Stop whining.

No, my point is that there most likely won't be a 2D-only special edition, for all those people saying they won't support 3D.

Oh, I know. If you want Special Features you will have to buy the 3D version. I hope they give free lube with that.

They do. It's called backwards compatibility with 2D.

And it's still a Double-dip and unknown if pricing will go up.

Maybe they'll add Avatar Trailer in 3D and possible Titanic Trailer in 3D.

Buying it in 2D, probably buying it in 3D. I love this movie.

Oh, they're going to milk this thing like a big-titted cow!

After these initial releases, there's going to be the 4-hour extended version, and maybe a 3-D version of that, then who knows what else to hype up the inevitable sequel. We're going to be seeing many, many versions of Avatar on home video in the near future.

Titanic will likely hit when either Avatar hits BD. If they make it a 3D version, then in November.

I wish I would have done that. IMO your not gonna miss much unless your like most people nowadays and like alot of special effects or 3D.
IMO the movie was decent but for me nowhere near Oscar material. I am old school and definitely in the minority here.
If the transfer on this is GREAT(PQ & SQ wise) . I will pick it up somewhere down the line for $8.99 or so. If the transfer isn't great I won't bother.
As far as 3D is concerned,I don't like it. If I want to see a magic show I would go to Vegas not the movies.

Well that's just mean. I'm honestly not a fan of 3D, nor did I think the film was amazing. And to put an age on this if need be, I'm 23 yrs. old and I enjoy films from Nosferatu all the way up to The Hurt Locker. And I sure as hell enjoy the old school filmmaking. I did enjoy it thogh and do give my kudos to Cameron for his work on it. . BUT when used here it made a difference. It worked. Is it a gimmick? yes, of course. It just depends on how you utilize that gimmick and make it worth an investment of time and work for it.

I'm assuming the 2D Avatar seemed somewhat flat and not really interesting as the 3D version was? To those of us that saw it. To see Avatar in 2D would totally kill the reason to even see Avatar. It wasn't made to be seen in 2d. YES, there is 2D but obviously it's a 3D film at it's core.
