Re: Saving Private Ryan --> May 4th

I understand the whole HDMI thing Polizei, that's why I specificially have programmed my Harmony remote to switch to a different input on the receiver and switch back in order to renegotiate whenever I feel the need to. WHERE it happens on this disc is CONSISTENT. Same place every time, and the issue remains throughout the rest of the movie. I can fast forward and rewind and skip chapters back and forth, and when a sync problem occurs, I can go back to earlier parts in the film and have no problem... skip forward again and the problem exists past chapter 15. I can renegotiate a handshake after chapter 15 a bajillion times, and nothin'.

This is why I'm blaming the authoring of the disc specifically. Just because it works for a lot of people doesn't mean that the authoring is done correctly. There are some players that cannot handle the sync after chapter 15 on this disc for some reason, and there are some chains of equipment that cannot handle the sync either.

For example, there are many people who have the Oppo BDP-83 such as I have, who report no issues while watching this film. Are they just not sensitive to sync? I'm sure they most likely are. However, for some reason, there's some kind of fault in the sync in MY chain of components. The same issue exists with tons of other people... and such issues are usually acknowledged on forums such as this. Yet in this case, it seems the people that are experiencing no issues on SPR (or not noticing them) are just blowing it off and assuming people such as myself, have zero technical know-how when it comes to using the equipment in place at home.

All I can definitively say is that the sync issue is there for me, and I'm not the only one. The fact that so many people ARE affected by this sync issue, means that SOMETHING wasn't done right during disc authoring.

A disc doesn't play if it's faulty? That's not true, there are tons of discs out there that had issues that needed to be fixed (Starship Troopers, Matrix Revolutions, etc) via a replacement program. Hopefully the same happens here.

Btw, from what I'm reading on a couple of other forums, some people have been calling Paramount in LA and Paramount has actually acknowledged that this is a known issue with the disc. They are taking names and #'s and it sounds like they'll have replacement discs soon.

Anybody know the correct # to contact them?

Watched yesterday (PS3 bitstreaming out to an Onkyo receiver via HDMI) and didn't notice any lip synch issues. Thing I noticed was that a couple of times things seemed to glow or have an almost halo effect on the screen. Don't remember noticing that before with the DVD release and it was at key times in the movie so assume it was for dramatic effect.

PS3 40gig model "fat"
HDMI
Onkyo SR-605 Receiver

Same setup - no noticeable issues either. I did feel like diving for cover a few times though - incredible picture and sound!

Jeff's most recent post regarding SPR:

"No physically bad pressing would result in a sync issue. Physically bad discs do one thing- glitch, freeze, break up(yes that's three things). I don't have access to the master recordings so I can't say for sure what people are seeing. I can say I have my own working hypothesis that several people have agreed with that I know have the experience necessary to do so, and that I've submitted this to Paramount. I don't want to say anything till something comes back because the inability to compare it to the master introduces too many variables"

Bad pressing? No. Bad authoring? Yep.

If you go to the Store Forum, there's a sticky that has phone numbers to stores, studios...etc. Check it out and see if they list what you're looking for.

Don't worry, Paramount will just re-issue it later this year and you guys can all buy it again - like Gladiator!

Not a very good track record for a Saphire Series. I've seen the whole thing now and have had no problem with any sync issues. I think it differs from Gladiator , in that Gladiator seemed to be a situation where they were willing to settle for substandard transfer. With SPR, the result is stunning and the intention was first rate however something in the authoring has caused a problem in some players.

mzupeman2 05-10-10 05:53 AM

Re: Saving Private Ryan --> May 4th

Right, there's definitely a fault that many peoples players are exploiting on this disc, and that's the fault of how they made the disc. That needs to be rectified. Gladiator was just a poor transfer, not an 'issue'.

No lip sync problems for me on my set-up: "fat" PS3, Panny Ax200 projector, Onkyo 604 HDMI receiver...

I am waiting for less than $15 for an old movie like this.

....I wouldn't call it an old movie. Maybe an older movie but it's far from old. It's only 12 yrs. old...hasn't even hit puberty yet I bet.

I called Paramount today (US, of course), and I can confirm they are aware of the issue, and say that there should be a replacement program sometime soon. They took my name and number, and will get back to me once they have more details. They took my address, as well.

Amazon discontinued the title b/c of technical problems. I wonder if they'll be issuing refunds.

I bought mine from Best Buy, but I haven't watched it yet. I wonder if they'll be issuing refunds as well. Maybe I should just exchange it when the problem is fixed.

I thought you couldn't bitstream the full lossless from the PS3? Isn't it either let the PS3 decode and send uncompressed multi-channel PCM, or bitstream the DTS core? Perhaps this has changed and I am unaware. Is your Onkyo lighting up as DTS-HD MA?

The slim model added it.

Mine is playing fine but obviously there is a problem in there. I'll exchange mine anyway as soon as a replacement is available

I probably will too. I didn't notice anything, but I got my copy at Amazon, so I might as well exchange it. Just to be on the safe side.

I still can't get a straight answer as to what the specific problem is - like exactly what kind of glitch and exactly where in the movie?

From what I can gather, it sounds like starting in chapter 15, the audio track and the video track aren't synced correctly, resulting in the sound and the video not matching up.

Go to my post #128. I mentioned 3 parts of the movie that are supposed to have sync issues.

The new version is ready on 5/18? I didn't know Target even carried SPR. I never saw it at any store and the website said it wasn't available in stores.
