What is this, 2002?

There have been a lot of early adopters who have gotten burned over the years (Beta, LaserDisc, etc) but the 1st generation Blu Ray buyers are going to go down in history as the most myopic (and the most deserving of getting burned, if only for their lousy attitudes, as evidenced by the above posts by jerks like slop101 and WMAangel), and I look forward engaging in a little schadenfreude when the first 2160p or 3D tv kills the format in about 12-18 months.

Blu-Ray hasn't even taken off yet, and it's gotten pretty cheap. Suddenly, somehow, the massively expensive undertaking that is 3D TV is just going to roll right over it? Don't think so. If consumers (like you, for example) aren't willing to pay the extra dough to adopt HD, why would you expect people to do the same for 3D? And on top of that, what suggests that the studios' tactics for trying to force your hand are going to be any less insistent as making the things that consumers like yourself really want format-exclusive?

I don't really care about Blu Ray. My point is that WB's tactic of trying to force me to convert to see the bonus features is a massive fail on their part. I will simply watch Higglety Pigglety Pop when it shows up on You Tube, and WB will get nothing from me.

I just think it's amusing that most Blu Ray lovers arguments are predicated on it being the 'best, clearest, most film-like' viewing experience available, which would mean that you all HAVE TO upgrade with every generation or format change (or else lose your ability to brag about having the 'best, clearest, highest bit rate' blah blah blah). And due to the compression of advancements in technology, and the unforseeable paradigm shifts in the media industry, these upgrades will be coming quicker and quicker. The myopia is funny to me.

Why don't you just go out and get a 35mm projector and be done with it?

So I'm the jerk for pointing out your tired complaint (that's already been regurgitated multiple times since way back in 2008 when the first format exclusive bonus features came about) would be better suited to existing threads in the DVD Talk forum where you can complain along with other people who have not upgraded to BD, rather than posting it here (in the HD Talk forum) where it will fall on nothing but non-sympathetic ears from people who have upgraded to BD?

Yeah....

Yeah....
I used to care (about DVD owners), but we are paying a premium for the discs. Tough cookies.

There is a great jump in detail, yes, and it is pretty wonderful, but I don't think any of us in this forum are looking to jump again, unless it's significant. 2K and 4K are not exactly "around the corner" when it comes to home entertainment, as far as I know. I imagine they're farther away from the birth of the Blu-Ray player than the Blu-Ray player was from the birth of consumer DVD.

3D, meanwhile, will have a really hard time shaking the idea that it is a niche product, and possibly never will. In fact, it's hard to imagine 2K and 4K image meaning all that much. At some point, there will be a roof on how much new visual information can even be gained, and whether it is perceptible to the human eye. Really, given the somewhat slow pace that people are adopting Blu-Ray, I have a hard time imagining studios would even bother again at 2K. Maybe 4K, but I imagine the rigs required would be prohibitively expensive, and remain an enthusiast product for the super rich.

Your argument is slightly predicated on the idea that all of us have massive amounts of disposable income and nothing to spend it on except technology, but I bet only around 30% of this HD Forum or less could be considered an "early adopter" when it comes to BD.

Yeah....
I'm curious about this topic in general -- so this not directed to you WMAngel in any way -- but would any moderators care to chime on this topic?

IMO, this sort of thing has been going for quite a while in this sub-forum; how is this any different at this rate to console bashing?

There were rules enacted -- and enforced -- in the Video Games sub-forum to prevent off topic discussions like this clouding up threads that are about something entirely different or the fact that Blu-ray ate all of their baloney sandwiches and burned their village to the ground.

I'm in the camp that someone who has zero interest in Blu-ray would be better off staying out of a Blu-ray-centric forum. I don't see it as a violation of the rules unless someone's continually derailing meaningful discussion.

I agree that it's more appropriate to discuss the lack of extras on a DVD in the DVD Talk forum vs. the HD Talk forum.

I personally have "bought into" blu-ray fairly recently (needed a nice TV first), but blu-ray is well past it's 1st generation and is essentially as successful as VHS and DVDs were at similar points in their lifespan. And outside of a handful of movies, 3D TV isn't going to do shit, because no one wants to wear glasses and sit perfectly still to watch a movie.

I thought the TV made the 3D images? I think that's the thing about it. It's the TV that does it.

I love Blu Ray! All the haters step out and back to the dvd forums. Can't wait to finally get to see this movie and in HD to boot.

The TV displays the 3D images, but you'll need a player capable of passing the imagery along. I've heard different reports about what'll be required as far as HDMI 1.3 vs. HDMI 1.4, so how that'll shake up is anyone's guess right now. It's not out of the realm of possibility that someone may need a new player and a new receiver to take full advantage, though.

Ohhhhh....ok cool. I'll stick my 2D stuff. Cinema is 2D for the pretty much all of it. So...why would I want The Wild Bunch in 3D. I jest of course....

I couldn't find a picture of it, but I saw the artwork for the BD of this film today.

Instead of the standard Blu-Ray Blue Strip at the top, "Blu Ray Disc!" is written in the WTWTA Font, which I thought was really neat

I love how people randomly come into BD threads in the HD forum just to tell us that the format isn't going to make it.

Anyway, DVDs are so 2005.

Burned over LaserDisc? Damn... I got eighteen years of releases out of the format. (1983 - 2000)

How is 3DTV going to kill Blu-ray when it is the only system that will be able to play back 3D movies? Oh that's right ESPN 3D and Discovery 3D which will probably only be carried by Direct TV and Dish Network... Cable systems? They've got enough problem with their HD feeds.
