To fans of the film, the festival version and the alternate ending are known quantities, of course, but at least they included those in this package, and both are decent contextual material for the uninitiated. Hopefully the ‘experts’ (or Woo in his interview?) will at least discuss the rather tumultuous fate the film faced right out of the gate, and/or give us a feel for what was lost. My thoughts on an extra disc of alternates cuts (aside from the two we’re getting) was really just wishful thinking because frankly there are just too many of them and they’re curiosities at best (like the Singapore version). Would love to see Woo’s original, but it just seems so improbable at this point.
At the very least I think it would have been cool to have a version with the boardroom ending intact as that's presumably the version that played most widely in HK theaters. (At least as far as I understand things.)

I’m stoked to see that, although the fact that they dumped them on streaming – free streaming no less – instead of giving us Blu or 4K exclusives first kinda tells me where their priorities are with the Golden Princess catalog. ETA: looks like they’re also rentable on YouTube so maybe they’re on Criterion Channel as well?

Really, really hoping there’s a disc set coming for those. They’re beyond deserving.
I'd be stunned if the Swordsman series wasn't given a disc a release. They're 3 of the roughly 20 Golden Princess titles that are known quantities to even the most casual HK film fans. If those didn't make the cut, then neither is 95% of the catalog.

I think you’re right. That reminded me that I still have my original VCD of BITH which ends that way. I got that back in the mid-90’s and it was my first time seeing the movie after having read a lot about it, and I probably assumed that was the version Hong Kong audiences were accustomed to (it wasn’t so easy to look stuff up in those days). I vaguely recall knowing about the car chase gunfight ending and being a little disappointed that it wasn’t on my VCD, although the boardroom ending is quite effective in its own right. When it first came out on Megastar’s non-anamorphic DVD in 1998, I bought it right away (paying a ridiculous amount) and discovered that it had the car chase finale. Then I bought it again in 2006-ish when Joy Sales put out a 2-disc version that offered three ways to watch the film via seamless branching (which might be more your cup of tea): with the car chase ending (which seems to have become the common version); with the boardroom ending; and as the ‘festival’ cut. So basically Shout appears to be giving us a variation on that content.

I just pulled both of the DVDs tonight to add them to my sell/trade piles (the VCD is buried deeper) and realized that the Joy Sales disc also has a Waise Lee interview on it, so clearly he’s the go-to actor for this one. I do hope that whomever interviewed him was able to conduct additional chats about some of the other HK stuff he was in, including SWORDSMAN 2.

(I also pulled my SWORDSMAN discs while I was at it, but I guess we’ll see if they get the Shout treatment beyond streaming ).

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Same here, no shipping notice yet for my Oct 21 order.
Spoiler:

I get it, they got slammed with orders and I am telling myself to be patient. I would not be shocked if I do not get a notice of shipping until right after Thanksgiving week, but we are less than 2 months out from 2026 so someone from Shout/Gruv needs to communicate with me before 2026. Again, I do not plan to reach out to their support email/number until after the Thanksgiving holiday as it has been less than a month with no shipping notice but in dealing with boutique labels as members of this forum have pointed out it is not uncommon to wait at least 30-60 days after a big sale before an order ships.

The only caveat is that you won't hear from GRUV; all the shoutfactory.com orders are being fulfilled by the previous team. It could be slow, but I'm sure it'll get there eventually. I was sort of expecting my second order to be incomplete since some of that stuff sold out, but it was all there.

A picked up the A Better Tomorrow 4K trilogy for $65 and change after the 15% discount. I can't use the 20% off code anymore on Gruv.

and looks like Hard Boiled is sold out on Amazon.

So glad I put that order in last minute. Crazy how demand was so high for that.

Edit: Looks like Hard Boiled is back in stock at Gruv.

I ended up reaching out to [email protected] about my orders; I never actually received a reply from them, but I DID get a shipping notice for my Oct. 21st order.

I assume that the Oct. 23rd order will eventually ship....

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Just got my Shaw Bros. Volume 4 set that I ordered from Amazon during that crazy Shout discount sale. It was backordered, but finally arrived today and it looks like Shout is out again.

Most of the sets are back to the $120 to 130 range. A few of them are in the $70 and 80 range. I guess they are the older less popular titltes.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

All but one item is scheduled to ship this week via Fedex.

What makes me go aarghh, is that this is the week my brother and I are driving down to Los Angeles on Wed morning and not coming back until the following Monday night and I live in an apartment and am a bit worried about packages piling up before I am back in the Bay Area on Monday. So the timing is a bit of a bummer, would have preferred if they shipped next week or even after Turkey day week, but I am still happy most if not all my order should be delivered soon.

I have had 1 (and I believe only 1) package stolen in all the time I have lived in my apt (heading towards 16 years), and that is amazing because I know that during the start of Covid package theft started to become a very noticeable issue that folks had to put up with, so I have been fortunate.

In fact, quite a few years back I actually came back to what had to be at least 2-3 days of packages that were piled up in front of my door and not a single package had been stolen but it would be nerve wracking to have these packages sit out for more than a day or two so I am going to beg if need be to have my brothers wife or his kid (she can also drive) come by and pick up the package for safe keeping.

ETA: My Labyrinth super deluxe set was cancelled but otherwise everything else shipped. They have already processed a refund for the Labyrinth set. Bit of a bummer, but other items in my order sold out or are now back to much higher price points so I am still happy.

You might be able to set something up from fedex.com to delay delivery or have them put it somewhere else for you (like pickup at a FedEx Office or something).

This. I have my FedEx packages held at the Walgreens down the street if I'm not going to be home to receive it.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Thank you Adam and Rocket, I have my deliveries now being held for pick-up at my local Walgreens and it sounds like I have 7 days to pick up. That is a bit of stress off my back.

We are talking about around $600.00 in merchandise that is easily sellable so not having to worry about porch pirates is awesome.

The new Hard Boiled 4K has a great looking transfer. I had not seen it since 2007 when the old Dragon Dynasty SE DVD came out.

I had forgotten what a great action movie this was. I'm now scheduled to get the A Better Tomorrow trilogy today and then in December I will get The Killer. I have not ordered City on Fire just yet.

I haven’t popped in Hard Boiled yet, but I just got City On Fire & A Better Tomorrow in the mail today. Just waiting on the Killer and I’ll probably order Bullet In The Head as well.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I’ve skimmed a few bits of CITY, HARD BOILED, PEKING OPERA (as well as random ‘moments’ from the Jet Li and GH boxes) and it’s so nice to finally have quintessential physical media versions of these after so many formats over so many decades. I’m sure I’ll say the same thing about Arrow’s releases when I totally lack the willpower to buy those eventually, too. I bought the just-released BETTER TOMORROW set at a video store here yesterday and likewise skimmed a few choice scenes on the Blus last night and they do indeed look beautiful. All of these movies are permanently burned into my brain so full revisits are for the future, although a quick peek at the ABT bonus disc has me thinking that that one will be on the front burner pretty soon.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

A couple of March releases from Shout are already up on Barnes and Noble. (The February slate has yet to be announced but should go up on Monday.)

If this holds, we have UHD release of Outbreak, Little Nicky, Hail Caesar!, The Flintstones, and The Swordsman Trilogy to look forward to in a few months, and presumably the previously listed Nightcrawler as well.

Unclear if that’s the full March slate, how many of these currently listed titles will actually be released in March, or what the February slate looks like.

Sure does seem like Shout is pulling back on horror significantly.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

^ Is there much horror left to release anymore? And how many of them can honestly justify pricey 4K upgrades that don’t make them any scarier, gorier, or better. Mind you, The Flintstones? Really?

The SWORDSMAN trilogy came up here a couple of weeks ago when it was spotted on Tubi already, so good to know that’s getting a disc set.

EDIT: Australia’s Imprint label posted this video of their upcoming (and likely overpriced) Golden Princess discs, and aside from the gems we’ve already got from Shout it includes two great titles that haven’t been announced by Shout yet: FULL CONTACT and TIGER ON BEAT. I know it’s not necessarily a sign of anything, but it would be cool if both of those are next up from Shout, with Imprint more or less following a similar release pattern based on the sub-license or some such. Just a thought. Also, whichever label releases them, they damned well better put both TIGER ON BEAT films in the same package.

And, just for nostalgic giggles :

Bonus! One of the more infamous Hong Kong stunts-gone-wrong from TIGER ON BEAT 2, edited right into the film despite the real-life weeks-long recovery time for lead actor Conan Lee. Nothing goes to waste, baby! :

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I just recently got Forced Vengeance from Gruv with the 20% discount code. It came out to like $20 something.

and then Amazon drops the price for BF to $16 and change. Doh. I grew impatient waiting for the price to drop and of course I get screwed.
