Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

This is just rambling, but ordering the Brave Archer set for around $40 got me thinking about the SF Shaw sets. I have had no problem at all dropping $100 on the Arrow Shawscope sets, but I see the +$100 price tag on the SF sets and just can't pull the trigger on ordering them. Maybe it's because the Arrow sets just feel more like premium products and I don't think that the SF sets are? I know when I got the Jackie Chan sets I was kind of disappointed that they were just 1 fat case in a cheap slipcover and not something fancier, like a studier slipbox like they used on the Street FIghter collection.

The boxes for all of Shout’s Shaw collections are sturdy, high-gloss hard boxes and not the cardboard slips like on those Chan sets. You can see them on various unboxing videos on YouTube. They’re actually quite nice, although I find the artwork a bit repetitive on all sides. The Arrow sets are definitely more premium by comparison, but the subsequent 3- and 4-film repackaging have cheaper cardboard slipcases. The best deal, so far I think, on the Shout boxes is when they turn up in the Target ‘Buy 2 Get 1 Free’ sales, which can bring the prices down to about $80-ish each (which is decent for 11-12 films plus supplements). That’s how I got the first four. Another option might be to wait and see if they end up in a ‘going OOP’ sale like the BRAVE ARCHER set. It seems likely, as I’d think they wouldn’t get a shorter licence on the ARCHER films compared to all the rest. Of course, if they do get discounted like that, they might go fast.

It sounds more like what SF used on the Critters Collection boxset that I have. But I guess I will know for sure since I will have the Brave Archer set in a couple of days.

Might be similar. I don’t have the Critters box for comparison, but based on some pics I looked at online, it does seem the same. All I can say is the Shaw’s are all really sturdy boxes, with a glossy finish (although I’ve got a couple where an edge or two seemed to crack a bit in shipment). There are a few unboxing videos of the Archer set on YouTube that give a pretty good idea. Arrow’s treatments are much nicer of course, at least on the bigger sets, but the Shout boxes get the job done.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I figured a Blacksploitation collection had to be coming sooner or later, especially as so many of these gems were released by MGM in their ‘Soul Cinema’ DVD line back in the day and would be easy to package together like this. I bought nearly all of those DVDs, but their reappearances in the Blu-ray era have been frustratingly spotty: a few from Kino, a few from Olive, etc.

My only gripe here is that this 12-disc set has only six movies because of the dual formatting. These are all classic blacksploitation movies, but 4K upgrades are hardly going to make them better or more enjoyable as films. Aside from the documentary on the first disc, all the remaining supplements (mostly commentaries) are from the old MGM discs. Kinda surprised they couldn’t get Fred Williamson, Pam Grier or Gloria Hendry – just about the last surviving major players in these films – to sit for interviews as they’ve done on releases of other films. Guess they’re getting up there now. Still, it might’ve been a more interesting set if Severin or Vinegar Syndrome had put it together.

And that artwork – oof. Feels a bit like AI to these eyes. Man, are they even trying anymore?

Artwork is atrocious. And yeah it seems like overkill to stick both UHD and BD in the box set. I looked , some of the extras are only on the BD while the UHD is barebones like Across 110th Street. I’m kind of hoping that they offer standalone editions on some of these films.

I only truly want 110th street and maybe Truck Turner. I already have Coffy and don’t want to double dip on that one at all

I would think that Shout was kind of in a no win situation with whether to release this set in either ac4K/blu-ray set vs just on Blu-ray. This set would probably not sell enough copies to justify doing just a 4K version, and if they released the set as just a blu-ray set people would complain about it not being in 4K and possibly hold out for a 4K set that may never come. Since the movies are all fairly short (around 95 minutes) Shout Factory could probably have made the set smaller buy doing double feature discs and only including the special features on the blu-ray discs, but people get upset about that too.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

It looks like July will include:
  • A 5-movie Jet Li collection in UHD, with Fist of Legend, The Legend, The Legend 2, Tai Chi Master, and The Bodyguard from Beijing.
  • Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (also in UHD; seemingly both standard + steelbook)
  • The Place Beyond the Pines (UHD)
  • Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut (UHD)
  • Battle Beyond the Stars (UHD)
  • Abigail (UHD)
  • Primary Colors (UHD)
  • Grave of the Fireflies (Blu-ray and steelbook)
  • Strangers with Candy (Blu-ray)
  • Wallace and Gromit: The Complete Cracking Collection (UHD; standard edition)

I'm sure there'll be more, but that's all MifuneFan has posted on the other forum so far.

Nice list if that's true and all appear to be new movies not previously released titles by them.

Glad I held off on Abigail. I love the movie and have watched the 4K version I bought on Vudu several times. I will be getting it and Ace Ventura for sure.

Alexander! Alexander better be the Ultimate Cut, though.

The last Blu-ray release of Alexander included both the theatrical cut and Ultimate Cut on separate discs. The theatrical cut looked far superior. The Ultimate Cut was assembled in 2K from a noticeably DNRed source. Unless Stone has gone and reassembled the entire movie again, I doubt there's much benefit in upconverting the existing master to 4K.

Looks like the Revisited "Final Cut" version is the middle version. As far as I know it was TC, Final Cut Revisited, and Ultimate Cut.

There are actually four versions of Alexander:

- Theatrical Cut
- Director's Cut
- "Revisited" Final Cut
- "Whoopsies! I Guess It Wasn't So Final After All! LOL!!!" Ultimate Cut

The Director's Cut is pretty much everybody's choice for the worst version of the movie. That one's only available on DVD and never made the transition to HD. The Final Cut debuted on Blu-ray. When the Ultimate Cut was then later released on Blu-ray, it came packaged with the Theatrical Cut on a separate disc, each from different video masters.

I'm in the minority in preferring the Theatrical Cut over any of the others. The Theatrical Cut is played mostly chronologically, except for one extended flashback in the middle of the movie. Every other version is chopped up with scenes jumbled around to tell the story non-linearly. The ordering of scenes (different in each successive version) feels randomized and makes little narrative sense to me.

Essentially, after the movie flopped in theaters and took such a critical drubbing, Stone started overthinking how to "fix" it and couldn't stop himself from tinkering with it every time he had the chance.

It looks like the Jet Li Collection that will be announced on Monday is the first from a new Shout line/imprint/whatever called Hong Kong Cinema Classics, complete with its own HK logo.

I loved those early Jet Li flicks. Tai Chi Master blew me away when I first saw it, along with those other Yuen Woo-ping flicks like Iron Monkey and Wing Chun. When Matrix came out, I saw his influence before finding out that he did the action choreography for the movie.

That’s pretty cool, if kinda late in the game, but I hope it’s not just an excuse for higher-priced 4K ‘combo’ editions of everything going forward, especially stuff that hasn’t been released stateside at all yet. Much like their Blacksploitation box, which was discussed here earlier, not everything needs 4K (despite the ‘day one’ buyers leaping at anything in the format), and Hong Kong films – which I adore and which by far have made up the largest component of my ‘collection’ for decades – are no exception. Maybe it’s just a perception, but Shout seems to be moving in that ‘combo or nothing’ direction more than some of the other boutiques that do separate editions on the two (and even sometimes three) formats. I suppose grumblers like me can rest easy with the UK Blu editions of the Li films, at least, but a different mix of supplements might have piqued my interest in a U.S. set more if I had an option.

Speaking of Shout Hong Kong stuff, they’ve finally started shipping corrected boxes for the Golden Harvest Shining Stars set. On the original release, the Blu-ray cases were virtually impossible to get out of the slip box, so they had new boxes manufactured and are shipping them out free of charge. Not sure if that problem existed on the Supernatural Shockers set, but either way if you bought a problematic item it’s worth dropping them a line (info@ shoutfactory. com) to request a replacement. They’ll even ship them for orders purchased in Canada.

Other future Hong Kong Cinema Classics releases, beyond this Jet Li Collection:

8/26 - City on Fire (UHD)
9/23 - Peking Opera Blues (UHD)

All of these movies (the Jet Li Collection included) are scans of the OCNs.

Nice. Both long overdue anywhere (and finally available from a legit company unlike a certain past edition of POB). Presumably combos as I suspected, which isn’t fair, but sales will happen I suppose.

It would be cool if this release of the first ON FIRE film was a sign that we might get others in that Ringo Lam ‘series’ down the road, particularly the long hoped-for SCHOOL ON FIRE in its uncut and uncensored glory, which is likely no easy task at this point.
