Where it might benefit is HDR grading and Wide Color Gamut, as the movie has some fairly vivid colors. Even then, honestly, I'm a little skeptical.
I recently watched the 88 Films Blu-ray upscaled to 4k. My guess is that it will look a lot like that with slightly better compression and colors.

I just looked it up and I only own the movie on an HD DVD Combo disc that odds are probably doesn't play anymore. I only kind-of like the movie, but it's never been one of my favorites from Mann. I'll add it to my wish list but am not in a hurry to buy a copy.

I wish it was Miami Vice the show and not the movie getting the 4k treatment.

Not sure if I want to upgrade World Trade Center to 4k since I still have not watched the blu-ray yet.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

TIMECOP . . . with supplements.

Not from Shout, of course.
Spoiler:

Extras: Bobbie Wygant "Time Cop" Interviews: with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ron Silver and Peter Hyams; Behind the Scenes Featurette; Restored Trailer; Original Trailer; Short Trailer; TV Spots; Dealer Promo; SNES Video Game Trailer; Picture Gallery; Booklet by Tobias Hohmann

Amazon Amazon

Are they new? No. Are they on YouTube? Many of them (including the Wygant press tour interviews and the dealer promo - and yes, they’re all dated fluff). Still, this shows it doesn’t take much to be a little inclusive just for the sake of it, even if ‘new’ supplements just aren’t feasible.

Also, word at the ‘other’ forum is that the European releases may fix the compromised audio that I’m sure many buyers have already paid Shout for, and which it seems they won’t fix.

And yes, European ‘releases’, plural.
Spoiler:
France version, in September:

Alternate ‘VHS’ packaging edition:

Extras (Google translated from the distributor site). These will presumably be in French and unsubbed, of course:

- VAN DAMME: A Clenched Fist for His Career, Part 10 by Arthur Cauras: Traffic Mortel, JCVD, Universal Soldier 3 (approx. 20 min.)
- Interview between David Da Silva (author of "
Van Damme and His Doubles Van Damme and His Doubles
") and Arthur Cauras about Timecop and the collaborations of Van Damme, Peter Hyams, and John Hyams (approx. 40 min.)
- Other never-before-seen bonus features 🤔
- Vintage trailer

Truth be told, this isn’t my preferred Van Damme film from this period anyway, so I probably dont need to own it, but it’s nice to see some companies care enough to collect up the extant extras in one place, or create some new ones, and even have some fun with the packaging for those who are into that kind of clutter. Maybe the next boutique that licenses the title in North America will do the same years from now.

World Trade Center is a good movie, but not one with a lot of replay value (IMO). I reviewed the HD DVD (same master as the Blu-ray) when it came out and rated it positively at that time. Not sure how well it holds up to modern standards.

^ Content appears to be well kept under wraps. Nothing online. Looking at Cohen’s writer + director efforts only presents a handful of titles that would possibly make sense in a set like this (PRIVATE FILES OF HOOVER, PERFECT STRANGERS, SPECIAL EFFECTS, DEADLY ILLUSION). So many of his directed films were horror/effects/blaxploitation/genre stuff, that I’m wondering if this might also include more movies that he wrote but didn’t direct, in which case you could build a sizeable ‘collection’ of ‘thrillers’ quite easily (I THE JURY, GUILTY AS SIN, CELLULAR, BEST SELLER, other lower-budget fare). Whether any of them are worth owning (especially if they’ve already been released on Blu) is another question; his most notable films have pretty much been mainstays through various formats.

True and being trapped in a building and probably a lot of scenes in the dark make it less likely to be fun as a repeat viewing.

'As a filmmaker, Larry Cohen was a true master ...' – Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com

A giant of low-budget genre and exploitation films, Larry Cohen blazed a trail as a writer and director that speaks for itself. Never one to be pigeonholed, Cohen's classification-defying oeuvre explored a range of styles with strongly written characters and a healthy dose of social commentary, creating memorable and entertaining films whose impact far outreached their expense.

Scream Factory is proud to present this three-film collection celebrating the talents of Cohen, showcasing the range and skill of a legend. The Private Files Of J. Edgar Hoover presents a fictionalized account of the man who ruled the FBI for decades under no fewer than eight different presidents. Special Effects offers a diabolical thriller about art imitating life when a film director casts an actress in a film about a murder ... that he himself committed. And the acclaimed Bette Davis essays her final film role in Wicked Stepmother, a comedic fantasy of witchcraft and wackiness.

Bonus Features for Blu-ray

DISC ONE: THE PRIVATE FILES OF J. EDGAR HOOVER (1977)
  • NEW 2K Scan From The Original Camera Negative
  • Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio Mono
  • NEW "The Most Feared Man: Scoring The Private Files Of J. Edgar Hoover" – An Interview With Film Music Historian Daniel Schweiger
  • Trailer
DISC TWO: SPECIAL EFFECTS (1984)
  • Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio Mono
  • Trailer
DISC THREE: WICKED STEPMOTHER (1989)
  • NEW 2K Scan From The Original Camera Negative
  • Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo
  • NEW "Which Witch Is Which: Editing Wicked Stepmother" – An Interview With Editor David Kern

Shout and Filmrise are merging.

The Newly Formed Global Entertainment Company Will Operate FilmRise and Shout! Studios Brands, Leveraging the Power of its Combined Best-in-Class Film & TV Distribution, Production, and Streaming Capabilities
LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, L.P. ("Oaktree") have acquired FilmRise, a leading independent digital streaming content distributor, and merged it with existing portfolio company Shout! Studios, one of the industry's pre-eminent independent film and television distributors. The combined company, Radial Entertainment (stylized as "Radial"), is a premier, global content distribution platform boasting a diverse library of 70,000 movies and episodes, one of the largest independent catalogs in the industry.

Garson Foos, CEO and Co-founder of Shout! Studios, will become CEO of Radial Entertainment and Danny Fisher, CEO and Co-founder of FilmRise, will become Executive Chairman.

Radial Entertainment has been created through a merger of strong industrial logic, where each business brings unique and complementary capabilities, assets, and expertise that interlock to create a complete, end-to-end production, distribution, and streaming business. FilmRise, a pioneer in digital streaming, has distinct monetization capabilities across paid, hybrid, and free ad-supported streaming tiers. FilmRise brings one of the largest independent catalogs of television and non-scripted content, with particular strength in true crime, reality, classics, medical, food, and UK genres. Shout! is one of the longest-standing independent distributors in the business, with deep industry expertise across streaming, transactional, theatrical, and physical channels. Shout!'s library of predominantly scripted films brings further genre diversification with premier titles across cult-classic, animation, action, award-winning, western, and horror categories. By combining libraries, capabilities, and best-in-class leadership teams from Shout! and FilmRise, Oaktree believes Radial Entertainment is primed to become the independent distributor of choice, better serving content owners and platforms. Additionally, Radial will uphold each company's strong commitment and established track record of delivering outstanding entertainment to audiences.

Jared Frandle, Managing Director for Oaktree's Special Situations strategy, comments, "Oaktree is excited to bring together two incredible Film & TV content distribution companies in FilmRise and Shout!. We believe combining these companies under the Radial umbrella creates a world-class Film & TV media business. It's an extraordinary combination that we believe brings the unique scale needed to compete and win in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital entertainment and streaming media. Based on our extensive work in the space, we continue to seek opportunities to invest and grow our catalog of Film & TV titles. To that end, Oaktree is committed to working with Radial's best-in-class management team to drive significant organic and M&A-driven growth going forward as we build Radial into a premium brand name in the media & entertainment space."

Garson Foos, CEO of Radial, continues, "We have long admired the FilmRise business and its executives, and have held a steadfast belief that a strategic transaction between FilmRise and Shout! would create an entertainment business of exciting scale. This is a highly additive merger between two very complementary organizations, and we have strong conviction in the incremental value that Radial will bring to our partners and dedicated consumer fan base. We will ensure that the spirit and soul of Shout! will flourish in this new organization and are thrilled to collaborate with the FilmRise team in taking the combined business to the next level."

Danny Fisher, Executive Chairman of Radial, states, "I believe that by bringing together FilmRise, a leader in ad-supported digital distribution, with Shout! Studios, renowned for their enduring legacy and successful adaptability in an ever-evolving industry, Radial is destined to become a media powerhouse. With an incredible leadership team and steadfast support from Oaktree Capital Management, we have exciting new opportunities to leverage our extensive content libraries and combined operational resources to drive future growth."

Since its original investment in Shout! Studios in 2023, Oaktree has been an active partner in supporting Shout!'s strategic vision to grow its content portfolio by acquiring entertainment companies and major content libraries. Oaktree remains committed to supporting the combined business's content investment strategy across M&A, content partnerships, and expansion of digital streaming channels.

Salem Partners acted as the exclusive financial and investment banking advisor to Oaktree and Shout! Studios. Guggenheim Securities acted as the exclusive financial and investment banking advisor to FilmRise. Greenberg Traurig acted as exclusive legal advisors to Shout! Studios. Manatt, Phelps & Phillips acted as exclusive legal advisors to FilmRise.

Filmrise has dozens of ad supported streaming channels. I wonder what happens with them. And they have free content on YouTube as well. Not sure how that relates to Shout staying afloat.

I think recently Shout has made their own movies too since I have seen their logo appear in the opening credits of some movies.

I don't really know much about Filmrise, and Shout seems like it's released just about everything they can license at this point. Feels like they're at a point where they're mostly just putting out b-movies and re-releasing previously-released discs as steelbooks. Combine this with the plummeting disc sales, and it makes me wonder if this merger isn't some kind of Hail Mary to stay in business. It's been my experience that when two small companies merge, it's not unusual for one or both of them to ultimately go under.

They just shelled out a gigantic pile of cash to obtain worldwide rights to the entire Golden Princess library. If they're going down, it won't be until they've milked that catalog for all it's worth.

This isn’t the case. Shout is doing very well and has been on a spree of acquiring libraries and other companies. They’ve diversified a lot, and their business doesn’t live and die by disc sales.

Shout also is making money off that library by sublicensing it to Arrow for UK distribution, and it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to further sublicense it to some other non US boutique labels.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Shipping update:

As part of our ongoing effort to improve your experience when shopping at Shout! Factory, we’re making a few updates to our shipping policies. Some of these changes come directly from your feedback, while others are necessary due to the rising costs of manufacturing, shipping, and handling.

If you’ve placed an order in the past couple of weeks, you might have noticed that we’ve stopped using paper mailers. For many collectors, this change has been a long time coming. We know how important it is for your items to arrive in good condition, and we recognize that past packaging didn’t always offer the protection needed. That’s why we’ve made the switch to corrugated boxes for all shipments. While it won’t prevent every possible issue, we’re confident this will help reduce the risk of damage like dings, dents, and scratches.

We’re also updating our free shipping policy. For more than a decade, we’ve offered free shipping on orders of $50 or more and have continued to absorb the rising costs that come with it. Starting August 1st, 2025, orders of $75 or more will qualify for free shipping. For orders below that amount, the flat shipping rate will increase by one dollar to $7.99. We remain committed to producing and delivering high-quality physical media, even as shipping and fulfillment costs continue to rise across the industry.

Thanks to all the fans who help to keep this dream alive,
The Shout! Factory Team

Shout is launching a Hong Kong Fight Club streaming channel. It includes a lot of the new content they recently acquired.

It sounds like it's going to be an ad supported channel.

Dang. It looks kinda cruddy but I know that's pre-restoration. As long as they can get the image detail out of that then it should look good.
