Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread
Finally got a close look at that artwork for the CHINESE GHOST STORY box posted in the batch above and . . . yeah, not feelin’ it. Everybody’s a different scale and there little sense of what the films are about, or even look like (not like that, really). But I’ll have to take it if I want the films. On the plus side, it’s Blu-ray only, so none of this 4K upselling bullshit, and it’s got a feature length doc on Leslie Cheung.

I also noticed another Hong Kong box on the site this morning devoted to gambling films. Not feelin’ the artwork again, but I’m so glad they’re bundling films like these together. And like the CGS set, it’s Blu-Ray only, with (thank Christ!) one audio commentary per film. I know some folks might want singles, but these are all kind of mid-tier in terms of their status in HK cinema history. There are definitely better gambling films from there, but these have their place in this uniquely Hong Kong genre.
This is basically a Shaw Brothers box. Nothing is from the Golden Princess acquisitions. CHALLENGE OF THE GAMESTERS and GODFATHER FROM CANTON are Shaw Brothers movies. DESTINY’S CHAMPION is, too, but I vaguely recall it being dumped by the studio (or something?) and released years later on DVD. LOVING YOU is Johnny To’s first team-up with Lau Ching-Wan (with a huge debt to the Harrison Ford weenie REGARDING HENRY. That one plus the CASINO TYCOON films were produced by Cosmopolitan Films, a joint venture between Shaw and the Hong Kong television station TVB run by Mona Fong, the second wife of Run Run Shaw. She produced a ton of Shaw films post-1978, plus a decent batch under the Cosmopolitan shingle (including three of the four titles in Shout’s site-exclusive Stephen Chow collection; the fourth, LOOK OUT OFFICER was also a Shaw/Cosmopolitan production, but apparently without her involvement).

Romance, comedy, and extraordinary fantasy collide in the sumptuous A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy. This acclaimed and influential series sparked a wave of ghostly films in Hong Kong, and bolstered the stardom of many of its cast and crew. Produced by Tsui Hark (Once Upon A Time In China) and featuring performances by Leslie Cheung (Farewell My Concubine), Joey Wang (Casino Tycoon), Jacky Cheung (Bullet In The Head), and Tony Leung (Hard Boiled), A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy is a must-have for your collection of Hong Kong Cinema Classics.
A CHINESE GHOST STORY (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (1.85:1) / Cantonese & English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono / 96 min.)
In this beloved cult classic fantasy, a traveling tax collector (Leslie Cheung) short on funds opts to take shelter in a seemingly abandoned temple. He is surprised to discover a beautiful maiden (Joey Wang) there, and instantly falls for her beauty and grace. While every romance has its challenges, the tax collector gets more than he bargained for when he learns that the maiden is in fact a ghost forced into servitude by a demon. With the help of a brave warrior, the tax collector must brave the perils of a supernatural world in order to free his newfound love.
A CHINESE GHOST STORY II (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (1.85:1) / Cantonese & English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono / 103 min.)
This vibrant sequel to the 1987 original A Chinese Ghost Story finds our innocent tax collector hero (Leslie Cheung) falsely imprisoned. Upon escaping, he crosses paths with a pair of rebellious women (Joey Wang and Michelle Reis). Though mourning the loss of his ghostly love, his broken heart must heal in a hurry in order to face a new series of paranormal encounters and adventures.
A CHINESE GHOST STORY III (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (1.85:1) / Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio Mono / 109 min.)
The A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy concludes with this third installment. In many ways a retelling of the original film's story, A Chinese Ghost Story III sees Joey Wang reprising her role from the 1987 classic as a stunning and supernatural spirit. A hundred years after the events of A Chinese Ghost Story, the demon who held the gorgeous ghost under its spell has reawakened to reclaim her.

I have the Better Tomorrow trilogy on Media Asia BD that I got from HK years ago. I would love to get the 4Ks, but it will heavily depend on how much they are.
Same goes with Hard Boiled.

A Better Tomorrow trilogy is $85 from Shout and Amazon, and Hard Boiled is $65. It's less from other shops; ABT is $77 and HB is $45 from Orbit DVD.

I’ll probably wait to see what Arrow’s Hard Boiled looks like, but I’ll definitely pick it up from one of the two. I’ll also grab A Better Tomorrow when it’s on sale.

Not the most important thing by any stretch, but the art for the Woo films is remarkably underwhelming. All the money spent on this, all the hype, and that's what they come up with? Chow Yun-fat on a plain green background? Green? For Hard Boiled? If you're going to be lazy, at least make it blue. And that ABT trilogy cover features way more ABTIII than anyone could possibly be asking for.
I was already leaning towards waiting to see what Arrow comes up with, but this pretty much guarantees that's what I'll be doing.

Interesting that Shout is releasing Beastmaster after the much-ballyhooed release by Vinegar Syndrome.

Just saw that the ABT trilogy set will have the work print version of ABTII featuring 30 extra minutes of footage!
Anyone who is familiar with the production of that movie knows that post-production got contentious with both Woo and Tsui Hark editing the film separately after the studio demanded Woo's original version be cut down. Whether or not this represents Woo's original cut I don't know, but I didn't think I'd ever see any of this footage.

As noted on previous Shout HK releases, I’d prefer a choice of 4K or Blu-ray sets, but obviously combining them is the best way to force people to accept the higher format and the higher prices along with it. I’m grateful these films are even getting 4K treatment, so there’s that, but not everyone collects it. I guess I do now, though.Just saw that the ABT trilogy set will have the work print version of ABTII featuring 30 extra minutes of footage!

Hong Kong movies back then were often altered for various Asian markets – officially and unofficially, sadly – but the Taiwan cuts often seem to be the most interesting and still extant. I’d love to see more of them turn up as extras in this library. HARD BOILED had a slightly longer Taiwan cut with many little alterations though nothing substantial as I recall, so I’m curious if those are what constitute the ‘deleted and extended scenes’ on Shout’s disc.
I’m with you on the artwork for these. That ‘green’ business for HB is just lazy and odd, as is the heavy emphasis on ABT III on the trilogy box, especially as it’s the least of the films. Thankfully Shout features the original poster art on the sleeves of most of these releases now. Of course, there’s no guarantee Arrow won’t take equal ‘artistic’ license with their cover art these days, but at least a bar of some sort has been set by Shout. Can’t say I’ve been overly stoked by most of their ‘new’ HK artwork so far (especially the CHINESE GHOST STORY box), but knowing me I’ll probably get versions of most of these movies from both sides of the pond (because I’m sure they’ll all come with alternate supplements

I’m itching to pre-order Hard Boiled and the ABT trilogy, but I think I’m going to wait to see what Arrow offers. Arrow really knocked it out of the park with their Bruce Lee releases, so I think there’s a decent chance that they’ll put out the definitive versions of the Woo movies.

Fairly certain that’ll never happen, but it’s nice to imagine.Edited to add, hours later: I was noticing the numbering on these. HARD BOILED is #17, while the ABT trilogy is #s 19-21. Kinda curious now what #18 is.

That HARD BOILED slip was sticking in my mind for a while today until I realized it’s very reminiscent of those ‘redesigned’ Blu-ray sleeves for all the Dreamworks animated movies.
I think if Arrow did a boxed set of Woo’s titles from the library or even a ‘Best of Golden Princess Collection’ in the style of their fancy Shawscope boxes, my brain would overload.

I was figuring on that one too, but part of me wonders if they might’ve held back on it for longer so they don’t burn through so many ‘top’ titles this fast. Even just these first few are all key classics. The catalog still has plenty of others, of course, and lots more in a sort of ‘second tier’ that could be singles or grouped into themed sets, but certainly THE KILLER would make sense parked right next to HARD BOILED in the line since they’ve often been tied to one another during the home video era.
And leaving that gap for now conveniently fuels a little speculation and free buzz.

^ That one’s number 7. When I was hunting around last night, I was able to account for all but #18.
A bunch of these screened at the American Cinematheque back in August (and perhaps they’re also available digitally along with THE KILLER as Rocket noted?):
https://www.americancinematheque.com...nema-classics/
HARD BOILED
THE KILLER
A BETTER TOMORROW 1-3
BULLET IN THE HEAD
CHINESE GHOST STORY 1-3
CITY ON FIRE
PEKING OPERA BLUES
Since all but two of those have now been issued on disc (or will be), I suppose that increases the chances of either KILLER or BULLET being #18 (and/or #22).

City on Fire 4K release is dope.
Looks the best it has ever looked -- it's a goddamn revelation. Also:

Looks the best it has ever looked -- it's a goddamn revelation. Also:
Quentin Tarantino didn’t just take inspiration from City on Fire, his debut essentially remade it. While watching, I found myself mentally stitching the two films together: Chow Yun-Fat as Mr. Orange, Danny Lee as Mr. White, and the jewelry heist playing out in ways Tarantino only hinted at. In fact, City on Fire almost feels like a missing puzzle piece, filling in the gaps and expanding the world we never got to see in Reservoir Dogs.

No, my expectation is that Arrow will put out a better product (in all aspects) than Shout and that Shout's slapdash artwork was just the final push I needed to convince me to wait. In the end the artwork itself doesn't really matter much to me.
