Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I thought Shout was only doing four Shaw boxes. Or was five the original plan? Or more? Good mix of films in that box regardless. Just picked up Vol. 3 and 4 in the recent Target ‘b2g1’ sale, so this one will be a long ways off for my budget.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Shawscope v.3 and Shout's Ti Lung/David Chiang box pretty much knocked out all my remaining high priority Shaw martial arts wants. I'm not sure I can go in on yet another box, especially one made up of B and C tier swordplay titles. It's cool that all of these are getting released in the US for (I think) the first time, but at a certain point I'm just never going to get through all of these.

Heck, I barely got through my mountains of Hong Kong DVDs of these titles (and barely touched my Ziieagle player – I suspect it will fritz from old age before I really dig into it) before the western labels finally started treating the Shaw library to these fancy boxes and standalone special editions. I’m a completist for these, and I do think many of the films are still pretty good, but no way can I spend $200 for the privilege. It kinda stung getting the Ti Lung and Brave Archer sets at arguable sale prices, but at least the main Shaw boxes are available outside the site and get better discounts eventually. Vols. 3 and 4 were around $78 each, which is much more bearable.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I noticed a couple of other new releases as well: MODEL HOUSE and FORMOSA BETRAYED. The first is a 2024 Shout Studios horror movie about bikini models trapped in a house with stalker fans or something that looks kinda formula. The second is a 2009 true-life period political thriller that got modestly ok reviews when it came out but basically went DTV (especially with the Dawson’s Creek guy in the lead). Haven’t seen it, but it’s cool that Shout would release a movie decidedly pro-Taiwan and anti-China views in the current political climate. Can’t really imagine there’s much of an audience for it, though.

I love Vampires but I'd have a hard time buying it again just for the 4k picture upgrade.

Interested in The Last Voyage of the Demeter once it drops in price. It would be a blind buy but the trailer looked interesting.

I watched it for the Halloween challenge and thought it was pretty dull and nothing special. I would definitely recommend streaming it before buying.

Not a blind buy movie in my estimation.

I saw The Last Voyage of the Demeter in the theater when it came out. While an interesting take on the vampire lore, it's not the kind of movie I would seek to own.

Sick is on Peacock. It's a horror movie that involves the pandemic.

A little late to respond to this but....yeah. A great idea, taking a chapter out of Stoker's Dracula that was never fleshed out, and filling in the blanks. Just ended up not really working.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I’ll spring for the Shaw set some day on sale, but jeezus can’t any of these companies do a box of something besides the martial arts films, even just for a breather? I’ll give Eureka credit with their Super Spies and Horrible History sets, but I guess Shout (and even Arrow) are kinda set in their ways.

On the plus side, I’m reasonably certain there are some titles in this set (BLACK ENFORCER, SHADOW GIRL, CRAZY NUTS) that never got DVD or VCD releases from IVL back in the day (and were possibly only on the Ziieagle player at who knows what running times)

Brace yourself! Eleven more martial arts films comprised from the famous Shaw Brothers' library await you in this action-packed boxset. Showcasing several hard-to- find entries in the Shaw canon – including many never before released on Blu-ray – Volume Six of the Shaw Brothers Classics Collection features more of the unique action and style that made the legendary Shaw filmography internationally adored.

SWORDSWOMEN THREE (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 100 min.)
Three sisters, whose clan is entrusted to protect a legendary sword, are sent after an ambitious warrior once his cunning schemes come to fruition and he takes the blade for his own. The renowned martial arts superstar Lieh Lo (Five Fingers Of Death, The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin) stars.

THE TWELVE GOLD MEDALLIONS (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 106 min.)
In the midst of a war, a swordsman sets about tracking down a series of messengers bearing imperial decrees — each fashioned in the form of a golden medallion. Hua Yueh (Come Drink With Me) stars.

THE BLACK ENFORCER (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 96 min.)
Lung is ordered to escort a murderer to prison, but the criminal is rescued by his minions, killing Lung's mother and sister in the process. And so begins a classic tale of revenge as only the Shaw Brothers can deliver.

DUEL FOR GOLD (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 98 min.)
Six talented and cunning warriors plot, betray, and outwit each other when a fortune in gold comes their way. Ivy Ling Po, Han Chin, and Lieh Lo star.

FINGER OF DOOM (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 96 min.)
Two swordsmen embark on a bizarre and supernatural adventure in order to find their missing brother ... and along the way, they seek to uncover the secret of the mysterious kung fu style known as 'Finger Of Doom' in this highly unusual martial arts thrill ride.

NA CHA AND THE SEVEN DEVILS (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 89 min.)
The mischievous Na Cha is tasked with retrieving seven magical peaches before they are eaten by demons — who will then become immortal — in this lighthearted fantasy epic.

SHADOW GIRL (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 81 min.)
The impish and playful Yin Chu loves to play pranks — and has the added advantage of being able to turn herself invisible! But when she ruins a wedding party with her shenanigans, the father of the bride swears revenge on our see-through heroine.

SWORDSMAN AT LARGE (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 93 min.)
The quest for a legendary weapon is the central focus of this character-driven wuxia from director Teng-Hung Hsu (One-Armed Swordsman Vs. Nine Killers, The Invincible Sword).

THE BLACK TAVERN (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 87 min.)
In this under-the-radar gem, various ne'er-do-wells converge on a tavern in search of a rumored treasure — only to discover that there's much more awaiting them.

THE YOUNG AVENGER (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 86 min.)
A young woman seeks revenge after learning the mysterious 'Dragon Sword' technique in this tale that deftly balances thrilling action and strong character development.

CRAZY NUTS OF KUNG FU (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 98 min.)
A bandit agrees to be the bodyguard for an itinerant gambler. Running afoul of an evil warlord, they soon find themselves mixed up with a band of rebels with revolution on their minds.

Since they do so many of these, they must be popular and sell well.

The economics of these do make me curious, though. Why not individual releases? Are there enough hardcore collectors of 1970s Kung Fu where they will buy a nearly $200 boxed set in order to get one or two movies they want?

No doubt they sell. In fact, I thought their original plan was for four sets in total, so I figured I wrapped it up when I got Vol. 3 and 4 in a Target B2G1 sale back in October. Then they go and announce two more.

I’m assuming it’s more economical somehow to do these as boxes? As resilient as the movies have been over the decades, outside of a handful of ‘key’ titles, I doubt there are enough fans of any individual titles in a lot of these sets to make single editions very profitable, whereas bundling them together in pretty boxes and tossing in a bunch of special features seems to do the trick. Arrow did break Shawscope Vol. 1 into three smaller sets (minus one film), but somehow I don’t picture Shout getting around to it.

I also think these multi-film sets appeal – perhaps even visually (they do look nice lined up on the shelf) – to folks who are maybe less familiar overall with the Shaw films, or only vaguely recall them from bad tv prints or dodgy VHS tapes and whatnot.

On a related note, I got Shout’s GOLDEN HARVEST: SHOOTING STARS for a really good price from the Canadian company Unobstructed View over the holidays, and while waiting for it to ship, I stumbled across some complaints online about how difficult it is to get the discs to slide out of the box. Boy, they weren’t kidding! It’s quite the workout. The discs are fine because they’re in the cases, but those cases have absolutely zero wiggle room once they’re in the box. Whole lotta shakin’! Not sure if it’s the same story with their other GH box set, but I’ll still grab it eventually regardless, I’m sure.

Those movies must also be cheap to license from Celestial.

That wouldn’t surprise me at this point. The DVD era saw a large number of them released on disc in North America but it did seem like the novelty wore off eventually, and now that we’re in this niche-y Blu-ray era I have to think a lot of rights holders (even beyond HK) probably can’t ask for the kind of money they got back in the day. I suppose if that means we’ll keep getting Shaw boxes for a while, I’m cool with it.

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I love these movies, but after the first wave of Shout boxes and 3 Shawscope sets (not to mention all of the various singles from 88, Eureka, etc.) my want list is pretty much tapped out. At this point I'll probably just skip vols. 5&6, but I know volume 7 will have some movie I've forgotten about that I'll want and then the completionist in me will be forced to go back and get the boxes I missed.

Duel for Gold in Vol 6 is an underrated martial art noir.
