Universal brings back flipper combos - defect reports go here

Yeah, only the DVD side. So maybe the experience with the disc isn't relevant to the argument, but it's another Universal Combo Format disc I had no issues with.

If people are so hot to watch a goddamned DVD, then buy a goddamned DVD and don't expect for one to come glued on the back of our Blu-rays.

I mean in the case of Uni catalog, the DVD's are probably dirt cheap by now. No, this is to make things easier on Uni, not the consumer.

Aside from them taking a minute or so to load, all 3 Bournes load up and play on the BH100. Phew. Curious to see how these fair on earlier machines (Samsung 1000 etc.)

It'll take me a day or two to get the full write-ups cleared, but I thought I'd let you guys know that both of the first two Bourne films loaded up just fine on both my JVC XV-BP1 and PS3, and played completely through without a hitch on the JVC.

You can tell expectations for the flippers are low when people are reporting that discs successfully play on their machines. I do not recall that ever being a key piece of information in reviews for every other Blu-ray ever released.

It's because of the problems with the DVD-18 and HD-DVD Combo Format discs Universal released, but the news is good, that the discs work. I'll agree to disagree about some of the arguments in this thread, and I see people's points, but are you really trying to turn the fact that people are reporting the discs work as a negative?

We're going to need a much larger sampling of users and discs over a period of like 12 months minimum before I believe these are problem free.

It ultimately boils down to a business decision by Universal, but one I do not have to like or support.

I think that BD has matured enough that random disc glitches (present on both formats at the beginning) are a thing of the past. I never had much doubt that these would run fie out of the box; it was/is longevity I am concerned with.

Re: Universal brings back flipper combos - defect reports go here
The January debut of Universal's Blu-ray + DVD flipper discs with the Bourne Trilogy films raised an interesting question. Would the studio stick with previously released titles on Blu-ray to move to the flipper format, or would it release films exclusively in high definition as flippers?
The answer, it turns out, is both.
The second wave of Universal Blu-ray + DVD flipper discs will include Traffic, The Jackal, and Out of Africa: 25th Anniversary Edition, all with an SRP of $26.98. Traffic is an HD DVD holdover, but the other are new to Blu-ray which means anyone who wants them will have to add flipper discs to their collection.
All three films will be presented in their original aspect ratios with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The Jackal will not include D-BOX Motion Control support but the other two films will.
Bonus features for each title are as follows:
Traffic
* Deleted Scenes
* Inside Traffic
* My Scenes
* BD Live
The Jackal
* The Making of The Jackal
* Feature Commentary with Director Michael Caton-Jones
* Production Notes
* Cast and Filmmakers
* Theatrical Trailer
* BD Live
* My Scenes
Out of Africa: 25th Anniversary Edition
* Deleted Scenes
* A Song of Africa
* Theatrical Trailer
* My Scenes
* Feature Commentary with Director Sydney Pollack
* BD Live
* Production Notes (DVD side only)
* Cast and Filmmakers (DVD side only)

Out of Africa with D-Box? Just what I've always wanted!
I think the info could be wrong, and it's The Jackal instead.

I'm sure "Traffic" would look amazing on Blu-ray, but I don't want the flipper combo disc. The only DVD copy I need is my Criterion.

Re: Universal brings back flipper combos - defect reports go here
why not I can think of several scenes in Out of Africa where D-Box could very easily be applied.
My first experience with D-box was watching Fast and Furious in a theatre last spring since then every movie that has had a theatrcial D-Box engagement i have gone to see, the best use of it being in AstroBoy and Final Destination 3-D the worst use The Book of Eli. for my birthday last year my present to myself was equiping my home theatre with a dbox chair.
But i find it very frustrating that some of the movies that had theatrical engagements in DBox are not including a Dbox track on the bluray release for example Pandorum, Harry Potter 6, Terminator Salvation, and Final Destination. even in instances where it was also included on the dvd.
and it looks like from the spec they are not including it on Astro boy either which as i mentioned above was the best use of a Dbox track in a theatrical release yet. I cant wait to see Clash of the Titans in DBox and 3D on April 2nd.
sorry if i got a little off topic.

If they keep giving the flipper treatment to movies I don't care about, it will be so much easier to avoid them.

I'm just chiming in to say that if these combo-discs are error/problem free, I don't have any problems with them either - in fact, I'd prefer the combo-discs as I'd find more use for the dvd side than I would for the title of the movie in bigger fonts.

Would you prefer a combo DVD+Blu-ray disc, or a two-disc set with one DVD and one Blu-ray disc, though? Since so many studios seem to be moving towards the latter, and that approach renders everyone-minus-the-studios' complaints about the combo discs moot, I just don't see what appeal the combo disc approach holds to anyone but Universal. I'm not saying combo discs are the end of the world or anything, but if there's a generally accepted approach no one has a problem with vs. an option that's annoying people (even if it's just a gripe with the concept), why go the less-liked direction?
