Universal brings back flipper combos - defect reports go here

Did anyone notice that Amazon has a ton of Warner/Universal re-releases set for Jan/Feb?

The WB titles are the same old catalog titles with a gold slipcover ('Award Editions').

A lot of the current Universal catalog is listed, including a remastered Street Fighter, Dawn of the Dead Director's Cut, Mummy films ...

The Universal titles are repackaged versions that include a DVD as well, I believe.

I also think Universal is releasing the Bourne films individually in January.

Yep...not sure if those come with a DVD copy though.

Universal Brings back Flipper Combos

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3819

In an industry first, Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced today the introduction of "groundbreaking" dual-format discs containing both Blu-ray and DVD versions of some of the studio's most iconic films. The new "flipper" discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the spy thrillers 'The Bourne Identity', 'The Bourne Supremacy' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum', premiering in the US as individually packaged Blu-ray discs (see blu-ray.com, November 29).

According to Universal. this makes it "ideal" for anyone planning to upgrade to Blu-ray at a future date as well as current owners of both Blu-ray and DVD systems. Each side of Universal's flipper discs includes the entire movie as well as all available bonus features.

"Universal's flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players," said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do."

Flipper BD/DVD discs were tested in the early days of DVD, but they were deemed impractical. It is unknown what development has made them possible now, and if any other company has worked in the development.

In 2006-2008, when Universal supported HD DVD exclusively, they were the major studio that most often went for combo editions, using it for most of its new releases and even some catalog titles.
JESUS TITTYFUCKING CHRIST! i hate flipper discs.

In the hopes that they don't start this on new releases, for those who don't like this, may I suggest everyone send them a note. The web address is:

http://universalstudios.com/contact_us.php

After click "accept" go to "DVD AND BLU-RAY" then on the next page click USA, and fill in the form.

Damn, I'm trying to get rid of my HD DVD's because of this crap. Didn't work then, it won't work now.

Wonderful, we'll have to deal with possible authoring errors. Again.

Just keep an eye on Amazon UK for any single-disc releases you're interested in, like the Bourne flicks already available. As with HD-DVD, they'll likely have non-flipper releases for their US flipper counterparts. I sincerely hope they don't do this with Atonement in January, but it looks likely since it's after the January 19th deadline.

Maybe they'll be cheaper than the ridiculously over priced set.

My glitchy Magnum PI discs wave hello.

I can't believe they're still going to do this, after all of the problems people have had with these flipper discs from the get-go.

This kind of stuff really pisses me off. I actually didn't hear about their plans to release Atonement (one of my favorite movies from 08) on Blu Ray so that is exciting, hopefully it won't come as a flipper...

BTW, Flipper refers to a disc in which you have to flip to finish it (i.e. Laserdisc). I don't recall HD DVD ever having "Flippers" and only a few DVDs.

I like the idea, though the idea of errors is of course worrisome.

And I wish there was another term for something like this besides "flipper". That should be reserved for those discs from the early days of DVD where a 2 hour movie was split in two and had to be flipped just to watch the whole thing. Those were bad, this isn't so bad.

They are 'Combo's' or whatever Uni wants to call them. As I said, Flipper's were never a HD DVD thing and rarely a DVD thing. It's just a word many people used when a disc was double-sided. You won't have to ever get up and flip a Blu-ray to finish a film.

They are now Combo's

Oh, Universal...how you make me laugh. You bring us 5 "new" BD catalog titles in almost 1.5 years and now this. Classic.

The other problem with these: Universal is lazy.

They had a habit in the past of leaving extras on the DVD side and omitting them from the HD side.

The sad thing is Universal is calling them "Flippers". WTF. Yes, HD DVD is dead and gone but "Combo" sounds way better then "Flipper".

It has nothing to do with the authoring, this is completely a replication issue.

I don't get this, DVD-18 basically failed on the DVD market because they were unreliable, so much so that Universal quit releasing TV shows this way, and the HD DVD Combo's weren't any better.

Why waste the money? Just toss the stand alone disc into the box at this point like Disney, Fox and WB.

From what I read, Universal will no longer be producing said DVDs anymore (when a Combo version launches). So if there are no more in production, they would have to start up a new run exclusively for each Blu-ray they put out. I guess this way they can just glue the DVD side to the BD and make one SKU vs two.

re: Universal brings back flipper combos - defect reports go here

One thing that bugs me is that at least standalone HD DVD's were about the same thickness as DVD's, so flippers/combos - whatever the hell we're calling them - wasn't a big issue when putting them in an HD DVD player, ore even a standard dvd player. But Blu Ray's are thicker - so what are these going to be like? Even thicker? Makes me wonder about discs getting jammed, especially in slot players like the PS3.

Thanks for saving me money, Universal! I won't buy a single "flipper" release.

Yeah, but these aren't flippers. Flippers are discs that you have to flip during the course of the movie. These are just two-sided discs, each side completely self-contained - and with how pathetic disc art has become, who cares if there's no writing on top of a disc?

I have a feeling this will pass onto their Day and Dates as well. They have not announced anything for 2010 yet (only catalog). And if this works...other studios may follow suite. This is the way to bridge DVD owners into Blu-ray just like the HD DVD titles.
