Anyone pick this up today to compare, or even to see if it's a huge jump from the last blu-ray, or not?
And why is this catalog release so expensive?

Screenshots show that not only does it look better, but it's a new transfer (dirt/marks on the old one are not present on the new).

Saw it at Best Buy today. It even states on a cover sticker in big letters that its a new digital transfer.

Well, Fry's had it for cheap (cheap enough) that I got it. And while it's sill not one of the best looking blu-rays out there, it's a freaking night & day difference compared to the old blu-ray. Besides having no more EE and ringing, the colors look both more natural and more vibrant. This is a considerable upgrade.

If yours definitely doesn't have it that would be really strange unless there were two runs of this disc for some reason.

Just play the disc. If it looks like a fairly modern film print, it's the new edition. If it looks like dogshit, it's the old one. Check out the screenshots for each version on DVD Beaver, and you should be able to figure out which one you have.
Yeah, I know that's obvious, but the difference really isn't subtle here. It's not like the Pirates of the Caribbean disc, where you have to know when the mis-framing occurs and what the proper framing looks like. Heck, nobody even caught that for months.

im guessing i had the old one. it was a blue disc w/ a small picture on the lower right side of the disc. plus it opened w/ old trailers so that gave it away once i watched it lol so i guess netflix didnt replace all their copies yet

Yeah, you're right, I just wasn't sure about that - I was mostly sure about the finer print that circles on the outside edge of the disc which used to say Miramax now says Buena Vista.

Here is the easiest way to tell the old disc from the new disc: audio soundtrack
Old disc has uncompressed PCM for lossless, new disc has DTS HD Master Audio....

Is it too soon to expect Netflix to have the discs replaced? I put Gangs on the top of my queue but don't want to get it yet if they're still sending out the old ones.

Just to update, I got one today from Netflix and it's still the old version. Just wish the reporter on that article had bothered to VERIFY that Netflix was actually being honest about that.
