Gangs of NY...is Blu better edition?

I've heard many arguments about the image of the film on Blu. But that also the DVD wasn't that great, image wise again. Well educated on what I missed on the supposed image argument. Also...does it look better overall than it's SD counterpart. I own the DVD and besides my own issues with the film, I do enjoy it..it just kinda falters near the the end for me among other little gripes like DiCaprio and Diaz acting against Day-Lewis is a losing match, Day-Lewis never backs down on his awesome acting the other two aren't up to his level...especially Diaz. Again I own the DVD and it does look a bit weird with some color hues which I don't' know was intentional or just the DVD.

Did you read any reviews on the title? Those will tell you exactly how the film looks - like shit.

It's a disappointment as far as blu-rays go, but it's certainly much, much better looking (and sounding) than it's SD-dvd counterpart. At the very least, the blu-ray doesn't split the movie into two discs, cutting it at an illogical location.

I'm kinda hoping Scorsese will eventually do an extended version, and we'd get a new transfer then... that said I still picked it up, I upgrade all my DVDs.

That's not very likely. Scorsese is the kind of director who feels that once he's finished a movie, he's doesn't like tinkering with it after-the-fact. I believe the only of his movies that's ever had a "director's cut" was 'New York, New York'.

This is what I was assuming but...I'd rather have someone who literally owns it on here to give me the word on it.

Also..a re release eh? This is why it's important to ask..something like this might happen...wonder what the re release would have?

I think for this title, a 100% trade-in if you own the previous BD is in order if the new one is truly remastered & improved.

At $39.99 retail for the new one, it's the very least they could do.

The re-release is just the same disc with a slip cover for Oscar reasons.

Are you sure? That's seems ridiculous.

99% sure. Paramount is doing the same thing as-is (I believe) Warner. Just a slip cover stating how many awards it got etc. I think Paramount did this last year with Top Gun and a few other titles that had already been released.

Let me see if I can dig up the picture.

But has there been any indication from Miramax that they're doing the same thing?

Re: Gangs of NY...is Blu better edition?

It seems weird to me that a studio would re-release a film touting the fact that it was nominated for a bunch of Oscars but didn't win any.

Re: Gangs of NY...is Blu better edition?

What does it mean by original recording? It's not the original score Scorsese had is it?

Re: Gangs of NY...is Blu better edition?

They usually use "original recording remastered" in reference to a CD, so I'm not sure what to make of this.

I also don't see why Disney would re-release this with Oscar mentions since the DVD and BD cover art has had that plastered on the top of the front cover since it was initially released. I always found that odd.

Maybe a CD is thrown in.

Its all very puzzling as there are a number of other reissues of the same discs at same time to capitalize on Oscars, but GONY is also getting a separate BD Rental release as well, which wouldnt happen if its just a simple reissue.

Maybe, but the notation is for CD releases of remasters. I doubt the score has been remastered just 7 years after the initial release.
