I guess I can't justify putting off Profound Desires of the Gods any longer - $17 for a dual-format edition of what is apparently one of Imamura's best films is a steal.

I want all of those! So happy to finally get some Mizoguchi in HD. I wonder if I should hold off on Double Indemnity and Lost Weekend to see if Universal releases them stateside later this year.

With that said, this is a fantastic set of really big titles, and, with the exception of The Lost Weekend, I'll be getting all of them. I'm especially excited for Mizoguchi in HD and to finally get to see the two Hitchcock shorts, which are among the small handful of his films I've never seen.
It's cool to see MoC getting major films like these (and Touch of Evil) and giving them the deluxe treatment - and hopefully the presumably strong sales will help fund future restorations/releases of less well-known titles.

Double Indemnity is supposed to be arriving on 9/4, so unless the MoC extras are excellent, I'll just wait for the US disc, as the Legacy disc was pretty stacked. Lost Weekend wasn't on the 2012 release schedule, so I'm probably safe ordering the MoC disc. It's a film that really deserves the upgrade, as the current bare-bones DVD is pretty lousy-looking. I'm in for the limited steelbooks of Lifeboat and Lost Weekend for sure. 2012 is shaping up to be a very expensive year!

Well, I wouldn't go that far - while I do generally agree that the last year of Criterion announcements was a bit of a disappointment (especially compared to the incredible year they had in 2010,) I'm actually more excited about Criterion's most recent announcement, mainly because I think these companies are at their best and most useful when they put out high-quality editions of films that don't already have decent DVD releases (the MoC releases of films like Humanity and Paper Balloons, Toni, L'argent, Coueur fidele and Le silence de lar mer are among my favorite DVDs in my entire collection.)
With that said, this is a fantastic set of really big titles, and, with the exception of The Lost Weekend, I'll be getting all of them. I'm especially excited for Mizoguchi in HD and to finally get to see the two Hitchcock shorts, which are among the small handful of his films I've never seen.
It's cool to see MoC getting major films like these (and Touch of Evil) and giving them the deluxe treatment - and hopefully the presumably strong sales will help fund future restorations/releases of less well-known titles.

On a side note, I'm really glad they're releasing dual-format versions of most titles now, since I'm a slacker and still haven't picked up a region-free Blu-ray player. (It's one of the first things I plan to buy when I get a real job.)

Oh, I did not know that! For some reason, the Sunrise dual format edition pops up as the first result on Amazon, but I can't seem to find Mad Detective for example.

Perfect, thanks for the link! I was just looking into their titles in general and the first 5 or 6 I have tried to find on Amazon all looked out of print, with dual editions nowhere to be found.

It's really nice to see Ruggles of Red Gap being released by MOC as Universal crapped all over it here in the U.S. by releasing it only on DVD-R.

If you're interested in Sunrise I'd also recommend City Girl, another fantastic Murnau film with an equally gorgeous transfer.
