re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I've only seen Anatomy of a Murder.
I'll hand it to Criterion, though - they inspire me to watch movies I possibly wouldn't watch otherwise. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Vanya on 42nd street was actually a top notch movie. I saw that in the theater.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Very excited about Anatomy of a Murder and will likely also grab Three Outlaw Samurai. Tiny Furniture does nothing for me and I will see about Vanya and World on a Wire.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm meh on the reissue of La Jetee and Sans Soleil due to the fact that the dvd is already anamorphic and looks good, and there are a good number of titles that need to be reissued due to the original releases not having anamorphic transfers (like Autumn Sonata, Picnic at Hanging Rock, or And the Ship Sails On) or in some cases the transfers where just not that great (like the Samurai Trilogy).

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
A pretty good month, with two that I'll want to have immediately (Anatomy of a Murder, World on a Wire), and one other that I'll get at the next B&N sale (Three Outlaw Samurai.) Vanya is fantastic, but since I already own the Sony DVD I probably won't upgrade for a while. I'm sure I'll rent Tiny Furniture, but pretty much everything I've read about it makes me think I'll dislike it.
Still, I'm disappointed every time there's a new announcement and it doesn't include a boxset, since it's been a surprisingly long time since they've released a non-Eclipse set. They apparently have quite a few in the pipeline - the Koker trilogy, the Apu trilogy, Wenders' Road Movie trilogy, Ingrid Bergman/Roberto Rossellini trilogy, etc. - and any one of those would automatically make for a fantastic month.

It'll be a great day when I can finally upgrade Andrei Rublev, my all-time favorite film, from the original mediocre non-anamorphic DVD to an anamorphic Blu-ray. (I realize that there's a Russian BD of the film available, but it's apparently a different cut of the film.) |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
in for Vanya on 42nd Street and possibly Tiny Furniture and Anatomy of a Murder once then next sale goes down
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm excited for Anatomy of a Murder and I might look into Three Outlaw Samurai, but that's it, other than a rental of World on a Wire.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Looks great! I'm in for all of them. But I always buy all of them...
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm really excited for Anatomy Of A Murder and World On A Wire...
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hooray for Gosha! And Anatomy too. Need to look up World on a Wire, Tiny Furniture and Vanya.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Amazon currently has a price mistake on Anatomy of a Murder and World on a Wire. You can preorder both for $16.99 each.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It would be nice if Criterion mixed in must-haves into at least half of their grouped releases. This last bunch is one big MEH.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Wow great catch on those! Got my pre-order in.
Also, Three Outlaw Samurai is currently at $20.99, which isn't a steal, but cheap enough for me. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I placed an order for Anatomy of a Murder, but I am expecting it to be cancelled.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Pre-ordered
I doubt these will be cancelled. I've often had the situation, several times with Marvel Omnibuses, where they put a lower MSRP at first so it has a better discount. Later they adjust, but I"ve always received them for the price I ordered at. I'd imagine the same here. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
went ahead and pre-ordered ANATOMY... :fc:

I'm surprised this hasn't been corrected yet - as I'm assuming the preorders are coming in like mad this morning

The Fassbinder is the most exciting release to me personally, since he's one of my favorite directors (though I realize you don't like him), and because I've been hearing a lot of positive buzz about this film specifically. With that said, I've also been hoping for a bit more from the announcements the last few months, mainly because there are a few titles that I know that they're working on that I'm really anxious to get (the Koker trilogy, The Wedding March, Lonesome, some Rivette, more Wenders, more Satyajit Ray, etc.) |

It's a different branch obviously, but Amazon UK cancelled all of the mis-priced Silent Running pre-orders.
Anyway - these may well be cancelled, but I'll give it a shot since those are the two releases this month that I'd want right away. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Thanks for the heads up. I pre-ordered both.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Ok, so Koker is Kiarostami, WM is von Stroheim, obviously less specifics about Rivette, Wenders & Ray, but what is Lonesome?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Glad I could help out for those of you who don't normally venture into the Amazon Bargains thread.
Hopefully these won't be canceled, and Amazon is normally very good about honoring mistakes like this, but it is sounding like there were a lot of orders placed...so we will see. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Both Anatomy of a Murder and World on a Wire are now unavailable for order. I had ordered Anatomy this morning and after thinking about it decided to order WoaW. My earlier order for Anatomy is still on my accounts page.

I'd say they did that do that time, even if none of the titles appeal to you. When it comes to appealing to as many parts of their demographic as possible, this is probably actually a pretty good month for them. There are at least two great films in this announcement (Vanya and Anatomy,) plus two (Anatomy and the sci-fi World on a Wire) that are likely to have an appeal beyond the usual Criterion fanbase. In fact, the Preminger is probably one of their more major announcements in a while - it's a classic film from classic Hollywood, and it also (I believe) marks the entry of James Stewart into the collection. I imagine it'll be a very good seller for them.

As for the other directors I listed, there are actually some specifics: Their Wenders releases will at least include his "Road Movie" trilogy (Alice in the Cities, The Wrong Move, and Kings of the Road), and we'll probably get at least a few others like The State of Things. The Rivette will probably at least be Out 1. The Ray will be "the Apu trilogy," and hopefully others. Of course, those are all really only "confirmed" insofar that they've stated that they're "working on them" in comments on Facebook/in response to emails/at various discussion panels, etc. There's always the possibility that some of them will never actually materialize. |

Damn, those were the two I wanted the most, too. I had to oversleep this morning... |

I'm in for Anatomy Of A Murder.

Got Rushmore today.
If not already mentioned, it comes with the Insert and Foldout poster like the DVD (though it's obviously shrunken a bit and slightly changed). Both show a runtime of 93 minutes on the case. |
