Great month! I've been holding off on the Suzukis in hopes that they would be redone, and more Hitchcock on Blu is only a good thing...

I'm all for upgrades but none of those interest me. I'm really hoping they get around to The Passion of Joan of Arc or Pandora's Box. I'd much rather have the silents upgraded. In fact, while I generally would like to see more films new to the collection rather than upgrades, there are still a few of those early spine numbers that could greatly benefit from being upgraded to anamorphic high definition (my favorite film, Andrei Rublev, being one of the prime examples.) Here's the DVD Beaver review of the original release of Tokyo Drifter: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...o_drifter_.htm |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
With the two Suzukis announced, what are the other low-spine titles left that are in direst need of upgrades? I'd say Summertime, Alphaville, Andrei Rublev and Picnic at Hanging Rock.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
surprised by the Suzukis, will definitely take them. Good month overall.
Noirfan, I'd Passion of Joan of Arc to that list. |

Grand Illusion does look good, but Passion could definitely look much better. And SC is issuing Grand Illusion soon on blu anyway.
As for A Night to Remember, havent seen that yet but making it anamorphic would be a big plus. |

Great news about Grand Illusion on Blu. Now I can keep my Criterion DVD sealed, but still have a copy to enjoy. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Studio Canal, likely to be region B locked though.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Uhm...did Criterion ever mention anything more about the first 18 Zatoichi films? They've had them for a while. And i'm watching them in chronological order as well on Hulu. I'd love to get a BD set of these. Are they waiting to get the rest of Katsu's Zatoichi films or what?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I would kill for a Zatoichi set from Criterion.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
This is kind of funny. I've KNOWN about Zatoichi for a while now. Never saw the films w/ Katsu. Just Beat Takeshi's film...of which I'd like a good BD of (fucking Miramax...). ANYWAY....I've always loved the idea of Zatoichi...just sounds badass. And starting about 10am this morning...I started going down the list starting from 1 to whatever number I'm on now on....Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold...I think that's 6. Soooo from what I see. These films are actually very timeless. Not much if anything ages them considerably. Very well directed they are. And holy fuck is Katsu a very stable actor in these. Can't believe he did so many.
Again..wtf holds Criterion from getting the rest of the films past Samaritan Zatoichi? |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Didn't Miramax buy the rights to some of them at Tarantino's behest?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
oh goddamn it to hell, guess we'll never see them. The last Katsu film is w/ Miramax. I dunno about those between Samaritan and the last Katsu Zatoichi (1989).

Finally, Weekend has been rumored forever! Hopefully it'll get a release in the spring, after the upcoming theatrical run.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, they've replied to questions about Weekend on their Facebook page a few months back that it'll be after the theatrical run.

Not to get too off topic but Metallica's upcoming experimental album with Lou Reed is titled "Lulu" and is supposed to be inspired by German Expressionist films such as Pandora's Box and others. I'm not a huge Metallica fan but I will be checking out the album.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
As the cinema component to the 2011 All Tomorrow's Parties U.S. Festival, the Criterion Collection has programmed theatrical screenings for seventeen films in its library. From September 30th through October 2nd, films will be shown at the Berkeley Hotel on Ocean Avenue between Asbury and Sunset Avenues in Asbury Park, New Jersey 07712. The following list details Criterion's full schedule for those dates. All showtimes are EST. Friday, September 30th - Zéro de conduite at 2:45 PM Blow Out at 6:00 PM Sweet Smell of Success at 8:15 PM Island of Lost Souls at 10:30 PM Quadrophenia at 12:00 AM Saturday, October 1st - Being John Malkovich at 12:00 PM Putney Swope (Q&A with director Robert Downey, Sr., to follow) at 2:15 PM The Times of Harvey Milk at 4:45 PM The Rock at 7:00 PM The Phantom Carriage at 9:45 PM Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at 12:00 AM Sunday, October 2nd - Deconstructing Dad: The Music, Machines, and Mystery of Raymond Scott (Q&A with director Stan Warnow to follow) at 11:30 AM Rushmore at 1:30 PM The Killing at 4:15 PM Belle de jour at 6:00 PM 12 Angry Men at 8:00 PM TBA Film at 10:00 PM During this long weekend, Criterion will screen all of the films free of charge. This link connects directly to Criterion's official festival rundown, which has further information on the individual films as well as on the rules and guidelines for attending the festival. Of particular note are the Quadrophenia, Being John Malkovich, Putney Swope, The Rock, Deconstructing Dad: The Music, Machines, and Mystery of Raymond Scott, and Belle de jour screenings, which suggest that Criterion is planning future home entertainment releases for these titles (or, in The Rock's case, a Blu-ray upgrade from Criterion's 2001 DVD edition). Further corroborating Putney Swope on Criterion Blu-ray or DVD is the following video showing Robert Downey, Sr., selecting titles from the Criterion Collection's product office; similar clips with Guillermo Del Toro and Michael K. Williams precluded Criterion's Blu-ray announcements for Cronos and Life During Wartime, respectively. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZHBVH6ut2k8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
