Spoiler:
Any guesses? So Lady Vanishes blu. Like Amarcord I am very happy I held off on the upgraded DVD's that came out in 2006. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
This is excellent. I never purchased either Criterion DVD of The Lady Vanishes. They've been rolling out great announcements lately, including well-deserved BD upgrades of their DVD releases.
More Hitchcock on BD is sorely needed. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm happy with any Hitchcock we get on Blu-ray. Lady Vanishes will be a good upgrade.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Damn. I was hoping that clue was related to The Gold Rush.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
December is always a slow month - if I remember correctly, the only new title last December was Cronos, plus an upgrade of Videodrome.
The two new Suzukis were in great need of upgrades, so I'm excited for those. I'm happy with my DVDs of Design for Living and The Lady Vanishes, so I probably won't get those in Blu, at least not immediately. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I am very excited right now...two of my favorites just got a MASSIVE upgrade. Hmmm, now I have to see who wants my old DVD's...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
This is great, Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill are 2 of the titles that I wanted on blu. I am extremely surprised that they are coming so soon. Tokyo Drifter is going to look great on bluray.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I never got either Suzuki film, so those are an easy call. I wish Youth of the Beast had been included.

That Tokyo Drifter cover is really, really, really, really awful. Like, one of the worst covers I've ever seen period, not just Criterion. I'll probably get The Lady Vanishes sometime. Not really interested in the others.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
4 titles in December? Wasn't expecting that. In for the Lady Vanishes upgrade (just sold my DVD this morning) and Design for Living. I haven't seen the Suzukis - I'll rent the DVDs before deciding.

Oh well, great news on The Lady Vanishes  , have no use for the other 3 though. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Design for Living Gary Cooper, Fredric March, and Miriam Hopkins play a trio of Americans in Paris who enter into a very adult “gentleman’s” agree*ment, in this continental pre-Code comedy freely adapted by Ben Hecht from a play by Noël Coward, and directed by Ernst Lubitsch. A risqué relationship comedy and a witty take on creative pursuits, it concerns a commercial artist (Hopkins) unable—or unwilling—to choose between the equally dashing painter (Cooper) and playwright (March) she meets on a train en route to the City of Light. Design for Living is Lubitsch at his most adroit, an entertainment at once debonair and racy, featuring three stars at the height of their allure. Disc Features - New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition - “The Clerk,” starring Charles Laughton—director Ernst Lubitsch’s segment of the 1932 film If I Had a Million, which he made just before Design for Living - Selected-scene commentary by film professor William Paul - Play of the Week: A Choice of Coward, a 1964 British television production of the play Design for Living, introduced on camera by playwright Noël Coward - New interview with film scholar and screenwriter Joseph McBride on Lubitsch and Ben Hecht’s screen adaptation of the Coward play - PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Kim Morgan |

However, if "Limelight" comes up before all of this, I will be happy. |

Nope. Only 1 new title and it's nothing too exciting. I'm all for upgrades but none of those interest me. I'm really hoping they get around to The Passion of Joan of Arc or Pandora's Box. I'd much rather have the silents upgraded.
