re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Can anyone recommend Trilogy of Life to me? I am someone too squeamish to watch Salo, based solely on the brief description I read. Thanks.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I've only seen The Decameron because prior to this release it was the only film easily available. The Decameron (and I've been told all three films) are the complete opposite of Salo. The Decameron has a lightness and fun in all of its sexy and lascivious scenes.
Passolini made Salo after these three films as a complete reversal of what he'd been doing; a way of undermining the fun, healthy and pleasent sex he'd been depicting in the trilogy. |

Ditto this. The guy's sexism and bombast both on the screen and in the personality I've gleaned from interviews and heard on his commentary track for 'the Island' (his only half-decent film) makes him one real royal jerk. Though he may be righteous, Moore cares about people. I bet Bay would love to have someone killed on set during a stunt for the story he can tell alone.

How is it important? It failed at its intended goal of unseating George W. Granted it was a huge hit but it's one of the most instantly dated films ever made. Watching it now has almost no relevency. Also, as a film it lacks the humor and giddy playfulness of Moore's better Roger and Me and Bowling for Columbine.

Any rumors/guesses for tomorrow?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

On the Waterfront Badlands The Kid with a Bike Tokyo Story (upgrade) Eclipse - Pierre Etaix |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hmm...
Badlands Monsieur Verdoux The 25th Hour The Passion of Joan of Arc (upgrade) -- because I just bought the MoC, it'll be announced soon Pandora's Box (upgrade) |

Do you think Criterion would ever release Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, and Sicko on Blu? I could only imagine them being successful catalog Blu releases only through CC. Controversy aside, BfC and F911 are two of the most notable films from the 2000s.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
While we are on the subject of disagreeable Criterion filmmakers (my, has that revealed some disagreeable characters on DVDTalk, too). Some might get a kick out of my recent interview with Paul Morrissey (though his Flesh For Frankenstein and Blood For Dracula are both OOP on Criterion):

Yes, because having a fine, upstanding citizen like Roman Polanski in their collection (with Rosemary's Baby) hasn't harmed their brand.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
you have to separate the art from the artist. If I didn't I probably wouldn't watch many movies at all because of the actors or director.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
just ON THE WATERFRONT for me
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I actually guessed two right. Yay!
... Anyways, I'll probably get all of these - though I'm most excited for The Kid with a Bike (my favorite movie of the year so far) and Chronicle of a Summer, since I don't own either on DVD. Edit: Just realized that it's not the Imamura Ballad of Narayama, which actually makes me more excited for it. |

On the Waterfront has 2 aspect ratios... which one is more correct?

This is from IMDb: The film was shot by Elia Kazan at the aspect ratio of 1.37:1. It was originally offered to 20th Century Fox by Kazan, but was turned down by Darryl F. Zanuck because the film was shot in black & white and in the academy ratio of 1.37. Fox at the time was big into Cinemascope wide screen pictures. The film may have been exhibited in a few theaters at 1.66 or even 1.85, but was shot, and exhibited, in 1954, at 1.37:1. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
On the Waterfront received a 4k restoration, so it should look fantastic. It appears that all of the DVD extras have been ported over.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Definitely looking forward to On The Waterfront.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
All of them eventually but On the Waterfront is a week 1 purchase.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
So, no 25th Hour? Later, maybe?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
25th Hour is probably still coming - but as with other "unofficially unannounced forever ago" titles like Y Tu Mama Tambien and Badlands, it's impossible to say when exactly. It may be announced next month or it may not be announced for another year or more.
