Can anyone recommend Trilogy of Life to me? I am someone too squeamish to watch Salo, based solely on the brief description I read. Thanks.

I've only seen The Decameron because prior to this release it was the only film easily available. The Decameron (and I've been told all three films) are the complete opposite of Salo. The Decameron has a lightness and fun in all of its sexy and lascivious scenes.

Passolini made Salo after these three films as a complete reversal of what he'd been doing; a way of undermining the fun, healthy and pleasent sex he'd been depicting in the trilogy.

The guy himself isn't an annoying guy. He may make movies that irk us but he's kind of cool guy...though I've heard he's also a hard ass on set. He, very elegantly, bitched out Hugo Weaving and Megan Fox. I haven't seen him being an annoying guy like Moore though.

Ditto this. The guy's sexism and bombast both on the screen and in the personality I've gleaned from interviews and heard on his commentary track for 'the Island' (his only half-decent film) makes him one real royal jerk. Though he may be righteous, Moore cares about people. I bet Bay would love to have someone killed on set during a stunt for the story he can tell alone.

If you can't enjoy the Bad Boys movies or The Rock then it must really suck to be you.

granted it's shown off screen there is only one scene that makes a lot of guys reach towards their crotches and wince

If Criterion screened what went into their catalog by which filmmaker had an abrasive or disagreeable personality, then half or more of their catalog wouldn't exist.
Fahrenheit 9/11 is an important film, regardless of politics and whether Moore dotted every single "i" and crossed every "t".

How is it important? It failed at its intended goal of unseating George W. Granted it was a huge hit but it's one of the most instantly dated films ever made. Watching it now has almost no relevency. Also, as a film it lacks the humor and giddy playfulness of Moore's better Roger and Me and Bowling for Columbine.

The Rock is fun, but I've found everything else he has made - including the Bad Boys movies - to be tedious, headache-inducing bores. Though I haven't seen The Island or the second Transformers.

In spite of that, I'm fairly content with my life.

I think of it as a cinematic time capsule. And quite a prescient one at that.

I have to disagree. It's his best film and the points he makes about the military and the media are still relevant to this day.

Michael Moore is a piece of shit so I hope Criterion has some dignity and class and doesn't let this assclown deface the whole collection.

Yes, because having a fine, upstanding citizen like Roman Polanski in their collection (with Rosemary's Baby) hasn't harmed their brand.

While we are on the subject of disagreeable Criterion filmmakers (my, has that revealed some disagreeable characters on DVDTalk, too). Some might get a kick out of my recent interview with Paul Morrissey (though his Flesh For Frankenstein and Blood For Dracula are both OOP on Criterion):

You took the words right out of my mouth. I don't like Michael Moore but nothing he's done compares to Polanski. If a rapist can have multiple films in the Criterion collection I suppose a blowhard could have one.

you have to separate the art from the artist. If I didn't I probably wouldn't watch many movies at all because of the actors or director.

I actually guessed two right. Yay!

...

Anyways, I'll probably get all of these - though I'm most excited for The Kid with a Bike (my favorite movie of the year so far) and Chronicle of a Summer, since I don't own either on DVD.

Edit: Just realized that it's not the Imamura Ballad of Narayama, which actually makes me more excited for it.

3 actually! 1.66:1 is listed as the 'main' one, and 1.33:1 and 1.85:1 are both "alternates".

This is from IMDb:

The film was shot by Elia Kazan at the aspect ratio of 1.37:1. It was originally offered to 20th Century Fox by Kazan, but was turned down by Darryl F. Zanuck because the film was shot in black & white and in the academy ratio of 1.37. Fox at the time was big into Cinemascope wide screen pictures. The film may have been exhibited in a few theaters at 1.66 or even 1.85, but was shot, and exhibited, in 1954, at 1.37:1.

On the Waterfront received a 4k restoration, so it should look fantastic. It appears that all of the DVD extras have been ported over.

Sondheim 11-15-12 05:31 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

25th Hour is probably still coming - but as with other "unofficially unannounced forever ago" titles like Y Tu Mama Tambien and Badlands, it's impossible to say when exactly. It may be announced next month or it may not be announced for another year or more.
