Because the normal BD case sucks? Blue, really? Even after a few years on the market and a few thousand releases later the cases are still a joke.

Says about .0001% of the internet population. All my friends love the blue cases, as do I.

The problem is that you kinda don't have a choice in the matter. While their functionality is fine, they're ugly and garish.

I completely disagree. I appreciate the simplicity and uniformity of them, and don't see anything ugly or garish about them whatsoever.

^ Uniformity, that's what I like about them.

On a related note, I emailed Jon Mulvaney about my Days of Heaven dvd with the clear plastic case. I couldn't remove the security sticker on top without tearing the clear plastic that covers the artwork. First time in 10+ years of collecting dvds and blu-rays that that has happened.

Jon replied by saying that they didn't offer replacement cases (the clear ones) and said other etailers carried such cases. Admittedly, I was surprised by his response and I'm happy to pay for one.

Where do I turn to now?

Seriously? Why don't we have a thread specifically for Criterion packaging yet? This thread is getting ridiculous.

If you're looking for discussion of the actual movies, you've come to the wrong place.

I think the problem is that the user in question was referring to the DVD of "Days Of Heaven" and not the blu-ray. If it were the blu-ray, the user would be able to purchase one of the other cases like you suggested above.

However, if the user is referring to the DVD then he'd have to scour the interent for a place that sells the clear Scanavo DVD cases that Criterion has been using for a few years... if the user wants things to be as close to the original packaging as possible, of course. I know I've come across a couple of places that sell the clear Scanavo cases, but I don't know what they are right now since I'm at work.

RE: packaging... sorry if this was already asked and covered in the thread... I don't have the patience to search through...

What type of packaging (or packages if they were released in 2 different ways) do these titles have?

The Seventh Seal
Breathless
Paris, Texas
Playtime
8 1/2

As far as I know, in practice, Criterion have not followed their $5 policy.

doctorthodt, I'm not meaning to talk to your issue particularly. I'm sure you'll have little difficulty getting your appropriate replacements, and sorry you ended up with a bad auction.

My point is the same, though: as much as we see people get replacements on here, those costs have to come from somewhere. I guess the only answer is that the costs are factored into the price of the DVDs/blu-rays that we all pay for.
I have purchased two Criterion dvds (out of probably 150) that came without booklets factory sealed from amazon.com. Luckily, it was before the $5 charge was put into place. Never had a problem getting a booklet from them for either title.

It's part of a box set, so a digipak would be expected.

It's a box set, I expected Digipaks. I'm guessing it will be like the Cassavetes DVD box set: 5 slim digipaks in one big slip box, probably with a booklet in there as well.

I REALLY hope they release the movies from that set seperately.

They've only done that a couple of times in the past, with two of the Cassavetes titles, so it would seem unlikely. However, I'm sure they realize that Easy Rider and Head would have a market of their own.

Didn't Sony license Easy Rider to Criterion only under the condition that it couldn't be released separately? Or was that never confirmed?
