I'm not sure if it's a particularly good movie, but it has so many things going and so many references that watching it almost like piecing together a puzzle: The Citizen Kane-ish structure, the Oscar Wilde references, the fictionalized biography of David Bowie that blurs the line between Bowie himself, his stage personas, and his music, the fact that's it's actually a blink-and-you'll-miss-it science fiction movie, taking place in a sort of dystopian parallel universe that's based on both George Orwell's 1984 and Bowie's Diamond Dogs album, and weaved with themes about sexuality, identity, and the nature of art and popular culture.

It's like Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World in that way. Technically boring, tedious, and pretentious, but still fascinating.
I think I'm just not on Todd Haynes' wavelength. I didn't like Safe either, and I thought his Mildred Pierce remake for HBO was frankly awful. I can recognize most of those ambitions you see in Velvet Goldmine, but the movie just does nothing with them. In everything of his I've seen, he approaches the material from too much of a remove, making it feel like an exercise he’s trying to study, not a story or characters he’s actually invested in.

On the other hand, I actually like Until the End of the World a lot.

Janus does, in fact, have the whole Infernal Affairs Trilogy.

That’s an easy purchase for me. Hopefully it will be in 4K.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

If a 4K box set of Infernal Affairs gets released by Criterion, I will absolutely get it. I may have mentioned it earlier in this thread. It's one of my favorite HK crime thrillers of the last 20 years. Well, Part 3 was really unnecessary. I still have my Media Asia HK DVDs that I would love to upgrade.

And here’s something fun: Call this Rumor Mill-worthy as well, but industry sources have also informed us that Criterion has been working on a new 4K Ultra HD upgrade of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead for release likely as part of their October slate. Watch for an official announcement soon.

Nice. I almost purchased this during the current sale but it was sold out so interested to see how the 4k goes. Hopefully not in Citizen Kane packaging!

Criterion has a "dogsofcriterion" Instagram account and they posted that they're working on a new Dog Day Afternoon commentary track, so I assume a new BD/UHD is on the way!

A new commentary? Who the hell is left besides Pacino? Or is it some commentary by a biographer?

I just snagged Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead from the current sale. This completes my 4 favorite Lynch flicks!

Here's hoping we get the Night of the Living Dead 4k announcement alongside Lost Highway come Monday.

My monthly prayer is for Malicks Voyage of Time on blu ray with multiple cuts of the film. So much time has passed though that I’m going to start praying for it in 4K.

There are murmurs of Arsenic and Old Lace as well, which is high up on my Blu-ray wish list.

As much as I love NOTLD, is it really going to be much of an upgrade in 4K? Especially considering I already have the Criterion BD.
