re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The UK had a release in 2018 from Masters of Cinema[/QUOTE]

Picked that up a few years back (fairly cheap on Amazon marketplace, too) to replace a VCD, of all things! It's a pretty good release. In terms of supplements, it's seems like Criterion's are basically on balance with Eureka's in terms of what a viewer will get out of them. Eureka also put out a couple of his other films – CREEPY and JOURNEY TO THE SHORE, but neither are as essential as CURE (or CHARISMA, or KAIRO, the latter of which Arrow has).

It was actually very well packed. It's just that the acrylic is so fragile that just about any amount of jostling during shipment will crack it.

I honestly won't even handle it without wearing white gloves.

Have any of you heard if Janus have acquired the rights for Sammo Hung Eastern Condors? There’s a Twitter account that posted this information but I’m sceptical if they are legit or not.

That Twitter account is, apparently, trash.
However, the 'source' of that info is someone on the criterion forums. No idea if that person is reliable or not, but hopefully it turns out to be true.

I never understood Eureka squeezing EASTERN CONDORS into a three pack with a couple of his period martial arts films from a decade earlier. Not that that isn't a nice set, but EASTERN CONDORS deserved a standalone release. Not sure it's Criterion-grade 'important', though, but I'd bite anyway.

Olivier Assayas' Late August, Early September was recently added to HBO Max with a Janus logo at the start.

Glad I resisted the temptation to pick up the WKW box set during the last sale. I wonder which other titles will go UHD.

Also a bit surprised about the trilogy. HD rerelease isn't compelling enough to replace the set I bought a few years ago.

From a marketing perspective, it's smart. They'll just get the 4K people to buy it all over again down the road. And they will.

The art for the IA trilogy reminds me of the cover of a book on East Asian Cinema I picked up years ago:
Amazon Amazon

Also, pretty weird to think that that loser creep Edison Chen will now be part of the Criterion Collection.

Was In the Mood For Love one of the films that was substantially messed with in their WKW set?

That hasn't really been the way they operate. Sure, they are upgrading titles that have previously been released. But they are announcing the UHDs along with the Blus since they started going 4K. If that is what they do, fuck them. I do not like this decision.

I’ll definitely buy the IA boxset and no, I don’t plan on double dipping if they release the 4K set later. I have the original Criterion individual release of ItMfL so also wondering if the colour was drastically changed on the film too?

I'm in this camp, too. Don't have 4K and probably never will. I'll probably die of old age before all or even most my favourite Criterion titles get the 4K treatment anyway (hell, I've even taken flack for daring to watch -- and (gasp!) enjoy -- DVDs on a screen larger than 32 inches ). But there are those for whom, understandably, there can be no other option but the highest resolution. And Criterion knows this, as do most other labels, and will milk them accordingly in due time.

Frankly, IA 2 and 3 are just ok movies, not great ones like the first. They won't improve in 4K, but kudos to Criterion for being inclusive like they were with the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA films. Hopefully they'll likewise include all the RAPED BY AN ANGEL films when they announce that set.

I prefer the older 'treatment' of ITMFL, so I'm pretty much stuck with that one. Seems likely this new 4K will be the colour-changed version. I have most of the other films in the revisionist Criterion box via earlier releases (DVD and Blu), and will make do with those as well. Just a preference since that's how they all looked originally.

I was going to say, Criterion has never really played that game. In the early days of the blu-ray era, there were a handful of dvd only titles relased that eventually got upgraded years later, but there are still a few that have never been upgraded. And there are still dozens of titles from the dvd era that haven't been upgraded.

I'm with you, and I'd be saying the same thing about their release patterns if this had been a single movie. But Criterion hasn't issued any UHD collections, so I think it's at least a little more likely that there could be a UHD set down the road.

Is the French UHD box set in October supposed to have English subtitles? I haven't been keeping up.

But why? What is the benefit? They don't need to make a dual UHD/Blu set for multi films. Just make separate releases and charge accordingly. It comes across more as they don't think it will do will, which is a bit crazy, considering the climate of HK cinema on disc.

UHD sets have to be on the horizon as Janus has been touting around that Three Colors restoration. I would assume they plan to be re-releasing that (obviously not an identical situation).

I have a gut feeling that Infernal will get a 4K release from Eureka.

Well, in this new batch DAISIES has no 4K option (not that anyone's complaining about it). Neither do recent announcements like EVE'S BAYOU, CURE, LA LLORONA, ARSENSIC AND OLD LACE, WORLD CINEMA 4, LE CORBEAU, EXOTICA and on and on. So either I'm missing the 4K listings for all of those, or they're not, in fact, announcing UHDs along with the Blus for everything. In fact, most of their announcements in recent months have been Blu-ray and DVD. Surely there must be some method to their madness here? Or perhaps they know INFERNAL AFFAIRS won't move as many units as many of us would like to see (despite the climate for HK cinema re-issues, which have largely been Blu-only as well), so the investment in UHD isn't justified . . . yet? Ergo, milk later.

That's why I said in my later comment that it comes across as they don't seem to think it would do well.
To me, it's just silly to not release a product that is getting a better release in another market, when you are the company who claims to "offer the highest technical quality." If any of those other titles were getting UHD release elsewhere, I'd say the same. It basically how we kept complaining about other companies were releasing UHD before Criterion got in the game.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Which then leaves open the possibility that they're just going to get people to buy it twice. I know it doesn't seem possible for such an exalted label, and many people will probably hold off in hope of a 4K set down the road, but I'm sure they know plenty will double-dip as well, just because.

(by the way, you're responding while I'm typing, so I don't always see the followups right away).
