Completely agree. I thought releasing it in Nov/Dec would have been great because of the content. Also, I wouldn't even wait for a B&N sale for this one, it would be a day of release purchase despite owning the SD version.

If it's Fear & Loathing it gives hope for a Traffic Blu-ray which I would love to watch.

Yeah...I'll refrain from getting the current BD of Traffic cuz it's not the CC edition. Fucker of a DVD was packed w/ shit.

Well neither Darjeeling or Fantasic Mr Fox was released by Criterion. Were just now getting Darjeeling after it being on DVD for a few years.

So many factors are involved that there is no set number. A film may require extension restoration etc. that can move that number up. Put it this way - with the lack of catalog we currently have on BD, it's safe to assume that previous sales of catalog titles was not enough to get those studios to release more catalog on BD. If they were making a profit, we would see more releases. But with BD prices dropping like a rock mere weeks after release, it's probably tough for them.

I don't know....I'm actually not too disappointed with the amount of catalog that's been released or announced.

It took DVD 10 years to get 100,000 titles out. Blu-ray has only been going for a fraction of that, partly with a format war under way.

Although there are are some color discrepancies comparing the UK MoC disc to the Criterion, the Masters Of Cinema disc was made from an standard def video transfer from back in 2000.

The Criterion comes from the restored print, so I'd go with that as the definitive source.

I know, right?...I don't normally pay attention to the bit rate but when I saw the way that bitch spiked up and stayed rather consistent from that scale. just...fucking wow.

Indeed. The MGM DVD was 1.33:1. I ALMOST bit on it too cuz I honestly didn't see this thing happening w/ an SE but then CC announced it...and that was badass. I can't wait for the next sale. I want it so bad but...I have to pay for my film equipment... :(

Since I've seen you post the same thoughts over at the review site's forum, how is it that you can be either "unimpressed" or "impressed"?

It's a review for a film... simple as that. Reviews are subjective, correct? Are they not a matter of personal taste? If a reviewer doesn't enjoy the story of a particular film as much as you do, how does that lead to you being "not impressed?"

The review for "House" still received appropriate scores for presentation. I don't think that Dr. Svet's personal view of the film has influenced his scores for the technical aspects, have they?

If you're not particulary happy about one person's opinion on a film, I would suggest you write your own review for the users.

Just saying. :)

Absolutely LOVE the Daniel Clowes covers!

Can't wait for those and really really looking forward to Robinson Crusoe on Mars Blu-Ray. What a great month.

Definitely going to pick up Army of Shadows and Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Seeing the trailers for both and definitely look superb films.

Not sure about Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor and when I saw Broadcast News on Encore, didn't care much for it to be honest.

I may very well have to get those Samuel Fuller films. Although honestly I might just prefer prints of the cover art.

Those Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss upgrades have been rumored for years, glad to finally get confirmation. Robinson Crusoe should look absolutely gorgeous in HD, but I'll probably just stick with a rental during next July's Sci-Fi Challenge rather than upgrade. I'm not sure about the Army of Shadows double-dip either.

cgray 10-15-10 04:41 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Nothing is ever wrong with a rental, but fwiw, Army of Shadows is one of my most wanted upgrades. I can't wait to see those slate grays and blues in hi def!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The extras look a bit light on the Fuller titles, but just having them on Blu-ray is enough to make me happy. I absolutely loathe those ugly Clowes covers though. It seems like Criterion is trying too hard these days to target the younger hipster crowd with their cover art.

I'm in for pretty much all of these.

Agreed about the Fuller covers though - they're horrendous and completely misrepresent the mood of the films. So much potential, squandered.

Especially Naked Kiss - showing Towers' bald head on the cover ruins one of the most arresting sequences in the whole film.

I love Clowes, so I dig the covers. I hardly think hipsters have any idea who Fuller is, so I don't really think Criterion is going for trying to target that demo.

Exactly! Criterion seems to think (perhaps correctly, sad as it may be) that the only way to market old, B & W Hollywood films to a younger audience is by enlisting fashionable artists with a hipster cache to design attention-grabbing, splashy packaging that has almost nothing to do with the actual films they're supposed to represent.
