At least The Graduate is more justifiable as it's an old film and can be improved greatly with a new transfer. Unlike very new films like Inside Llewyn Davis which has the same PQ with some extras thrown in.

Is Criterion ever going to release The Last Picture Show on it's own? I don't want to buy the BBC set just for one movie... and they already released Five Easy Pieces separately.

I love that Criterion are able to license out these classic 60's and 70's studio films. So many great titles at their disposal.

The MGM Graduate blu-ray is an old master with mpeg-2 encoding on a single layer, barebones BD. I think there's room in the marketplace for a brand new 4k restoaration loaded with extras.

The Graduate is one of those films I've always meant to see but never have yet so I may look into getting the Criterion edition during the next Barnes & Noble fifty percent off sale.

I guess I'm still waiting on Altman's "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" and "California Spilt"...a little worried that "California Split" is going to be released by Kino Lorber with no extras...I can see them releasing "McCabe & Mrs. Miller", though...and I know that with the way it was shot, it's unlikely McCabe will look that good in HD, I'd still love it if it was a Criterion release...would also be cool they released "The Last Detail"....but I know that's coming out by Twilight Time...so, being in Canada, that'll cost at least $70+ shipping...argh....

done right, McCabe should look stunning in HD. Heck, look at the Arrow release of The Long Goodbye for example.

$70+ for a Twilight Time disc to Canada? Even with our awful exchange rate right now, a single TT disc wouldn't be that much. Overpriced, surely, but not $70 and up. If they did release The Last Detail, it would be better to wait for the inevitable $10-off sales to get a copy . . .

Arrow's liner notes say that MGM supplied the master, so I'd imagine they're the same transfer (though better encoded, I'm sure).

I was in the same boat a few years ago and when I finally checked it out.....meh. As far as iconic Hoffman films of the time I much prefer Midnight Cowboy.

Yeah, the Kino and Arrow are the same transfer, but the Arrow encode is superior. I really wish some of these American companies would take a trip to the UK and learn how to encode like the Brits do. It's the one aspect of their releases that are almost always superior to the US counterparts.

I wasn't much impressed with the Kino disc, but it wasn't the encoding that bothered me. It's clearly an old film scan lacking in detail, performed without any special care (or knowledge) to deal with Zsigmond's post-flashing technique.

It is the same underlying master so not night and day differences but Arrow did additional restorative work/cleanup on it under James White's supervision and, apart from much superior encoding, the contrast and colour grading looks better because Kino, as usual, have upped the gamma (see any comparison between their releases and Signal One Entertainment's for example).

I also believe that the underlying MGM master was created with some input from Zsigmond as to how it should look.

Of course both films now are so dated that they're essentially time capsules (of a perception of) a particular time period. "Cowboy" is a more interesting film with a bunch of complex and interesting characters. "The Graduate" is a pretty simple story you've seen many times and Hoffman is certainly too old for the role.

I find "The Graduate" interesting for the director's visual style and composition. Its even more interesting that Mike Nichol's later films were shot in a more straightforward visual style.

Never seen The Apu Trilogy, nor know wtf they're about. For some reason, Ray doesn't interest me as just being told about the work.

I came out a month ago and the Criterion Store has it on sale for 75 bucks (MSRP is 95). The only retailer I've only seen it listed is on Amazon. Does anyone have any more info on this?

Was that one of the box sets they has at Costco before the holidays? I know there was a "Rock" box that I almost picked up, but I already had A Hard Days Night.

I never saw that set at my Costco or I would have picked it up. Good way to pick up all the Criterion Hitchcock releases. I just wish it was discounted a little more (especially after the price of the other Hitchcock boxset in the bargains thread that I got during the holidays).

What's crazy is the Amazon listing has an MSRP of $150 and a sale price of $130!

It's just a cheap box wrapped around those 4 previously released Hitch movies - nothing new or special about it worthy of any real consideration. Most people interested in that box should already have those releases, and have gotten them from all the 50% off sales.

Yeah but it's reasonably priced and it would be awesome to get during the B & N sale but this seems to be exclusive to Amazon and Criterion's Store. I just wanted to confirm this with someone else.
