Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Good Lord, they're making me purchase Brazil again
It's my favorite movie, I bought the massive Criterion LD box set in 1997. It cost $150 in 1997 dollars! And I was in my 20s barely making bupkis. That meant checking the Criterion website every day like clockwork until it was the Deal of the Day. 30% of, $105 was more palatable. And then 2 years later the Criterion DVDs came out for like $40. Sigh... but I still have both. And the Blu-Ray. And soon this. But for now never stick your head out of a train. |

There ain't that many movies that are more early-80s ABC Sunday Night Movie than The Wiz.
But ZOWIE Diana Ross was so wildly miscast. |

DVD Blu-ray 4K That's 4. Well, I suppose, technically, I suppose Criterion did have two SKUs on Laserdisc for the deluxe CAV box set and a slimmed-down CLV edition with just the movie. |

Weren't there two DVDs? Non-anamorphic and anamorphic? Or am I thinking of a different title?

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I remember the first release of the Brazil Criterion DVD set being non anamorphic cause I sold it off when I moved to a widescreen TV and later I found a good deal on the re-issued DVD box bought it again to get the 16x9 version (just checked my records, 17.99 in 2013 at Half Price Books.)

Six releases, then? |

Loved that and I love how knowledgeable she is on these movies.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Had a feeling based on that earlier clip that she and Letts probably already owned most of the collection. I suspect a a few other celebs who’ve been in there have the bulk of it as well, but I admire her honesty in taking doubles as giveaways for guests or (supposedly) other actors she wants to enlighten.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Ordered the Yojimbo / Sanjuro 4K set to replace my BDs, and also ordered the Gregg Araki 4K set. Used $50 in gift cards, so it came in under $50 with free shipping and after tax. Not bad.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I was tempted by Yojimbo/Sanjuro but thought I might wait for more reviews of the BFI set.
My all-UHD order is:
I normally wouldn’t order nearly so much, but I had $85 in stockpiled gift cards and figured “why not?” |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yup that $300 Bergman Cinema set I've had my eye on for a while now? Conveniently out of stock. I could shit in a melon

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Show off.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Nothing for me this time, gotta tighten my belt here lately. I want the Godzilla vs Biollante eventually but I was one of the lucky few to grab the Blu-ray release a few years ago when it was cheap.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Damn, this is disappointing. Over at DVD Beaver, Gary Tooze has provided a bunch of comparison frames showing the new Criterion transfer of Night Moves, and it appears to suffer from some serious teal sickness.
"The new Criterion image is uncomfortably green and blue-ish and will court controversy. It is also much darker than the previous digital editions." https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...5cbdf69ac1.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...9b5b49c9f3.jpg |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Just checked out the other screencaps there. Pretty significant, and I’m happy to stick with the Warner Archive Blu-ray on this one.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Weird... Isitdownrightnow.com even tells me that it's down for everyone. I still can't access it, even with www included.
Okay, even more strange... I tried to access it on my phone, with the same issue. I switched to LTE and it worked fine. So it seems to either be getting blocked by my router, or my ISP. |

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Criterion claim to have used a vintage IB Tech print as a color reference for whatever that's worth.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
That teal even made James Cameron vomit.
|
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Damn, Night Moves is one of the few Criterions I was interested in. Oh well, looks like I’ll just find the older version somewhere.

I can’t recall the last site I came across where that was the case. |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
While the first image looks dated, but it's dated to its date.
The second image looks terribly modern and modernly terrible. |

July:
Our July TitlesComing in July: a hard-boiled tale of vice and retribution, an unnervingly frank look at American masculinity in the postwar era, and a soulful study of the complexities of a sibling relationship. Plus: a sumptuously crafted vision of a pitiless aristocracy and the celebrated saga that chronicled one of the most indelible characters of the French New Wave—now on 4K UHD.https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1744402401 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1744402401 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1744402401 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1744402401 https://braze-images.com/appboy/comm...jpg?1744402401 |
Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
None of those titles interest me to own. I heard You Can Count on Me is good, but I haven't seen it and I don't think that's a title that has lots of replay value. I do like Laura Linney. I would like to see it though. Hopefully Criterion Channel gets it at some point.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
First month in a loooooong time that I’m getting every release! Fantastic slate. I was giving up hope on the Truffaut set.
