Huge missed opportunity by not including Citizen Kane or King Kong, their very first releases. Doesn’t seem like any early titles are represented there.

This collection is based on titles that are popular with guests who visit Criterion's closet. No one is pulling laserdiscs off the shelves in those videos.

I don't understand who the target audience is for the CC40 set. Normal people won't drop that much on a set of movies, and the CC fans probably already have most of those movies already. The CC obsessives will get it but I cannot see it selling beyond that,

They need to do a Kurosawa blu-ray set instead along the lines of the Bergman set.

They said it's not a historical survey.

Yeah, I get with Kane or Kong aren't included but this point here is what I first thought of. I'm only a casual Criterion collector anymore and I don't have the vast majority of those, and I'm certainly not going to buy a box like this to get them.

I hope they have good market research showing that this will sell some units, I'd hate for something silly like this to give them a bad financial quarter if it doesn't sell.

That's a lot of money to drop when you know half those titles will eventually make the jump to 4K. Not sure what serious film collector would invest in this.

Criterion collectors who must own every single release. It's a release designed almost as much for marketing purposes as a legitimate profit maker. Most labels do something along those lines.

In 2024, there really can't be many of those hardcore Criterion collectors left.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

When Criterion released the Martha Graham Dance on Film set I was on a DVD message board that doesn't exist anymore, and a lot of members on that board were complaining that they had to get it so they wouldn't have a skipped number. I said that I didn't understand buying something you have absolutely no interest in just cause it has a number on the spine and people got real upset with me about it. I guess this set appeals to the same group of people.

davidh777 08-08-24 08:43 PM

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I could see them selling 27 copies to the hardcore fans, then taking advantage of the high price point to throw it into a Goldbox kind of deal and move the remaining 23 copies.

Right, but that was in 2007. As I mentioned earlier, those hardcore Criterion collectors surely would have shrunk considerably since then.
It's one thing to collect every spine number (even at #406) - but being at #1,200+ (or whatever they're at now) with many being re-purchased for the upgrade to Blu-Ray and/or 4K must've had many collectors waving their white flags. Nevermind that we're in inflationary times - making it even harder to justify these purchases.

It's a decent collection with mostly very solid titles - and the price per movie is good... but I can't see many dropping $640+ in one shot just for movies nowadays.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I don't know. The ones I was dealing with got upset when Criterion started releasing blu-rays because the case size was different and their shelves where they had them lined up by spine number would not be uniform. Their solution was to buy both the dvd and blu-ray versions which seems extreme for discs that have an SRP of $40. Then they started doing the dual format releases and they got mad about those being different.

Criterion has smartly stopped giving a shit about those people, by which I mean those who will never be satisfied by any changes they make.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I'm kinda wondering if Criterion is making these for folks in the industry to give as gifts or such. Someone like Spielberg or Lucas could buy a handful of these for friends and family or something like that.

I wonder how many of those 40 discs in each set will be so badly scratched due to packaging that Criterion has to do replacements?

Criterion doesn't do replacements, bitch! They are CRITERION and they are LEGION!

No, they are making it for the people that will buy everything that has the Criterion "C" on it.

I had a damaged/faulty disc in the Bergman set and they did replace it for me. I did have to send pictures and a video of the playback error

November titles:

Seven Samurai
Scarface
Godzilla
Funny Girl
The Shape of Water
Paper Moon

all 4K releases.

Plus that CC40 set, but that’s HD only.

Been a long time coming on Paper Moon.

The Shape of Water already has a UHD… we’ll see how they compare.

I already have the UK UHD release of Seven Samurai on order, but I'm definitely in for Godzilla and would consider...well, everything else.

Paper Moon is huge. I know they've received many requests for that one.

I did the same. My immediate thought was that I'd upgrade but then remembered I had it. They'll have to add some really compelling features to tempt me.

I’ll try to hold off on the Godzilla 4k, but boy I wish there would be an upgrade to that entire Showa set.

Just Seven Samurai, Godzilla, and Shape of Water. I never did buy the original Shape of Water 4K disc and it looks to just be a repackage.

Also, let's not overlook... another Disney owned film being licensed! Open Searchlight dam!

I don't own many Criterion movies but I thought this quote from Bill Hunt was noteworthy.
https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/081524-1300

You may also have noticed an interesting detail: Guillermo del Toro’s

The Shape of Water is a Fox Searchlight title. And yes, I’ve been able to confirm that Criterion is now able to license Fox titles from Disney! It’s being done on a case by case basis, but that should be considered very good news for fans of Fox catalog films hoping to see more of them released in 4K. Rest assured, I’ll have more to say on that subject in the weeks ahead.

Consider getting any Fox discs from Disney period as a bonus. I don't think we're ever getting Fight Club on UHD.

I think with the pull of David Fincher's name on his back catalog Fight Club will get released on 4k eventually. Maybe after Seven is released. I think if Criterion might release Fox movies I think a movie like LA Confidential would be a perfect movie for Criterion to release in 4k. It was a Regency Picture who I think is now under the Disney/Fox name.

Sounds to me like they're trying to blow out some old stock that isn't moving or repackaging a bunch of shopworn returns from Barnes & Noble, and hoping they get a few takers to get some cash flow.

The pictures sure make it look like the discs have new art, so I don't think that's what's going on.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I was supposed to see Wong Kar-wai's "Fallen Angels" on the big screen ( well, big-ish screen at the local micro-theater ) last night, but they had technical difficulties that resulted in my only seeing the first half or so. So while messing around online this morning reading about the movie, I saw that the Criterion WKW box set was on sale for 100 bucks on Amazon. I had some gift card & credit card point "money" to spend there, so I ordered it for $42 out of pocket.

There's another showing of the movie Saturday afternoon. Fingers crossed it goes more smoothly.
