Really….and where was it said that Criterion would never go blu?

I don't think it's impossible, but I'm not optimistic about heavy support by Criterion. I suspect the most likely course would be if a filmmaker insisted upon it, like Soderbergh (who had a 4K remaster and HDR grade done for Sex, Lies, and Videotape) or Wes Anderson (say, for Isle of Dogs, which was prepped for Ultra HD Blu-ray but didn't make it to retail). That, or being embarrassed if their competition on the other side of the Atlantic dove into Ultra HD Blu-ray and siphoned away a bit of their market. But would it ever amount to more than a handful of titles (if that)? I hope so, but... I'd imagine seeing 4K titles on their streaming service would be a bellwether.

I'm just thinking the overall catalog and what percentage of films in their vault could truly benefit from a good 4K remaster, let alone releasing it that way. My guess it's very small.

I don't know if it was said, but they waited a long time to go Blu...I actually expect them to go 4K within three years. It's an untapped revenue stream for them...they'd be silly to ignore it.

I think a decent percentage of their current Blu-ray releases come from 4K remasters, so no remastering would be necessary.

If Kino can put out UHD's, Criterion can too. I don't think it will be a regular occurence, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

Particularly when you consider one of the big things Criterion is known for is the best disk-based video quality available.

Makes the decision a bit easier for them.

They may have been scanned at 4k, but were they graded for HDR?

Different times. Physical Media was still a money maker when they started making Blu-rays.

Samsung just announced today they are out of the 4k Blu Ray player buisness.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc.../#4a10b5801577

It's not going to give companies like Criterion a positive outlook to start making 4k discs when big companies pull of manufacturing players.

It's not impossible Criterion would test the water with a few discs but it's looking bleak.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yea, Criterion sees what's happening and will be very cautious about releasing 4K discs. Things have changed a lot since DVD and BD were released.

Criterion is pushing their own streaming service now, among the many streaming services available.

Companies are actually getting out of optical discs altogether. Oppo is bailing on what used to be their bread and butter - optical disc players.
Sony releases the PS4 Pro without UHD, and there's talk of MS releasing an XBOX without an optical drive at all.

I have a 4K UHD player only because it's built into my XBOX One X. I don't own any 4K movies though. Hell, I don't even own a physical copy of a game - they're all digital.

Agreed! Among many others, I don't think Spartan has an HD release at all.

Homicide, Spanish Prisoner, The Winslow Boy, Heist, Spartan, and Redbelt would all make fine Mamet Criterion entries.

Yes. Why can't we get "Lost Highway" instead of re-releases of "Twin Peaks: FWWM" and "Blue Velvet"?

I would love to know all the specs on the Criterion release (I hate when they put "... and more!") to see of the blu-ray that I have now is obsolete. Does it have the Siskel and Ebert review, for instance? That's a gem addition if there ever was one!

The 2-minute Siskel & Ebert clip on the MGM Blu-ray is edited down significantly from the original broadcast. You can find the full 5-minute review on YouTube.

Do you all know about Letterboxd? It's got cool lists functions but is more encompassing about film. Here's one example of a list I made on it:

I watched it on the Criterion streaming channel, last night.

I didn't particularly enjoy it. Not sure if I just wasn't in the mood for it, or what.

If you sign up, now, you can watch it for free (it's the current movie of the week). You get a 30 day free trial, so I would expect that if you didn't like the service, you could just cancel it and owe nothing.

I love To Sleep with Anger and I usually show it in my film class. It's deliberately paced, full of symbolism, and kinda weird so it's an acquired taste to be sure. I can't wait for the B&N sale so I can pick it up.

A buddy of mine reviewed it - he like it.

To Sleep With Anger ? The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review) at Why So Blu?

For every In the Heat of the Night, the Criterion Collection has found time to pick films to add to their library depicting black life that stays away from focusing on racial oppression, crime, gangs, or other tropes. To Sleep with Anger is an interesting choice. Not a wildly popular film, but the winner of multiple Independent Spirit Awards, and one that’s been added to the National Film Registry. It’s a slow-burn drama that puts focus on a family dealing with tensions that are beginning to boil over. There’s a poetry to what we are seeing and hearing on screen, which was undoubtedly the intention of award-winning writer/director Charles Burnett. Now the film has been restored and fitted with some new interviews and more for this wonderful Blu-ray package.

Just as a FYI, along with the movie, there are also 3 extras available to stream:

They're on the Criterion streaming service website, that I mentioned earlier. https://www.criterionchannel.com/

However, since they are currently part of the Movie of the Week offering, they'll probably only be there until Wednesday.

I expect they'll be available, again, once the service fully launches. I believe that happens in early April.
