re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Ok just going over the wikipedia page i know these films were released by CC on LD but not BR (or DVD either)
The Graduate
It's A Wonderful Life
Blade Runner
The Princess Bride
North By Northwest
Forbidden Planet
The Wizard Of Oz
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Adventures Of Robin Hood
Casablanca
Ghostbusters
Raging Bull
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Carrie
Dr. Strangelove
The Adventures Of Baron Manchausen
Akira
Jason And The Argonauts
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Menace II Society
Halloween
Boogie Nights

(these they released on DVD but not BR)
RoboCop
The Silence Of The Lambs
This Is Spinal Tap
Traffic
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Chasing Amy
The Killer

I am trying to compile a "complete criterion collection" with every film they released. I want the Blu-Ray of any movie they released on LD or DVD and the best DVD version of any movie they released that is not on BR

I watched The Red Shoes last night on bluray - and I was totally gobsmacked - the restoration is simply stunning. Even though the film was shot in 4:3, 35mm film, some of the scenes look so sharp they look almost 70mm 'crisp'

Anyone know how to get replacement Criterion Blu-ray cases? I got Che in the mail today from the Barnes and Noble sale and when I opened it I discovered that one of the cases had a huge crack it in and a lot of the plastic was breaking off the case... I obviously don't want to keep the movie in a broken case.

My Che Part 1 case had a tear in it. You can buy a replacement case + cover by sending $5 to the Criterion store via paypal.

[email protected]

just tell them what you need in the message box and your address and they will ship it out.

You could obviously return it to B&N through the mail, which I'm sure you're trying to avoid. Is it possible, however, to return it to your nearest B&N location for an exchange? Have you contacted them about that?

I'm sure Criterion would be more than happy to send you a replacement case for money, but this isn't a case of just buying a replacement for an extra... it's to replace a damaged case. Criterion may suggest also contacting B&N, though, before giving in to sending one out. Ya never know.

If it's just the case that is broken, contact Criterion and they will send you some replacements for free. The same thing happened to me a while back and they were really cool about fixing a problem that wasn't even theirs to begin with.

Cool to hear. I just got a copy of Sanjuro from BN.com and the cover was cut weird. The title on the spine is half on the spine and half on the back of the case. I guess I'll email them to see if I can get a replacement cover insert.

Also, I got Chunking Express as part of the sale and it was in a digipack. I was a little surprised, I thought all of those would have been sold off by now. Guess I'll order another case from Criterion...

Email B&N with the information and order number and your name and address and everything and they'll ship another one out to you. I had to do it a while back and they told me to not even bother sending the broken one back.

My Sanjuro is the same way. I'm going out to Best Buy where I've seen the set and buy it and return the weirdly cut one personally.

Thanks for all the responses re: the broken Che Part 2 case guys. I e-mailed Criterion about it, and they are helping me out by sending a new replacement case. Seriously great customer service. I'm definitely going to be a fan for life!

October 26th is like Christmas this year, with the Alien Anthology, Back to the Future trilogy, and Rock Band 3 also coming.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Seriously, September 28th through October 26th is INSANE.

September 28, 2010
* Iron Man 2 (Paramount)
* King Kong (1933) (Warner)
* The Thin Red Line (Criterion)

October 05, 2010
* Beauty and the Beast (Diamond Edition) (Buena Vista)
* Grindhouse: Special Edition (Vivendi)
* The Maltese Falcon (Warner)
* The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Warner Brothers)

October 12, 2010
* The Darjeeling Limited (Criterion)
* The Magician (Criterion)

October 19, 2010
* Psycho: 50th Anniversary Edition (Universal)
* Seven Samurai (Criterion)

October 26, 2010
* Alien Anthology (20th Century Fox)
* Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy (Universal)
* Paths of Glory (Criterion)
And those are just the ones I'm personally getting. At least the Criterion's can wait until November for a likely B&N sale.

I picked up an extra copy of Criterion's out-of-print Man Who Fell to Earth Blu-ray thinking that I'd hold on to it and eventually trade or sell it.... but now I'm having second thoughts that my digipack BD may not ever become much more valuable than it is at the moment.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Take a look at what The Third Man (CC) (BD) (OOP) sells for....

Probably somewhere between $40 and $60 max for a period before it gets re-released (and then settling in that lower range after at best). Subtract selling/packaging/gas/time/effort costs and your max profit might be $15-30 depending on your purchase price/costs.

Plus numerous other people probably bought it with the same intention, versus 'The Third Man' which seemed to dry up quicker.

I don't expect Man Who Fell To Earth is going to do much after market.
I bought one copy just to see it again and see if my opinion of it has changed much over the years. I expect to get close to the $14 I paid for it back, after commission fees are tacked on to the final sale price- but not much more than that.

Sealed you might get the original MSRP, but the problem is a lot of other people are snapping up copies now from B&N now with the same intention of making a killing down the line. I expect supply to exceed demand for a long time on this- unless you're prepared to offer it at a discount. Andd then you have to worry about unloading it before Lionsgate comes out with their version.

At the worst though, you won't lose money- just might not make much.

Even when it is re-released there will be Criterion collectors out there keeping the price up. But I do agree it's not going to sky rocket any time soon as Amazon is still selling new copies of it, Pierrot le fou has been OOP for months and you can still easily buy it new for less than the msrp.

I threw on Black Narcissus last night. Looks absolutely amazing. So good that it becomes easy to see where the matte paintings start, unfortunately.

I kinda see that as a bonus, actually. Makes the film seem more charming, more picturebooky, more fantasy.

On the flipside, they are probably the most beautiful matte paintings ever made.

It was amazing to watch the bonus features of Narcissus, where they showed clips of the original film elements, and you could see what an amazing restoration had been done.

I'm interested on Black Narcissus and Red Shoes..but..I'm not sure if I can dig them. They look fucking gorgeous and interesting concepts to me. I'm sure they're great but...would I like them? I'm still iffy on whether I should get them. I mean w/ this sale I just bought...so many great films from CC but these 2 I'm the most iffy on. I saw the trailers, I respect the worlds created by the production but....dunno if I should bite on them.

Powell and Pressburger are among the most underrated and impressive filmmaking duos in film history, and Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes are arguably the highlights of their careers. Buy the movies. Do it now and don't look back.
