King of Comedy would be awesome via CC.

Criterion is going to be releasing The Great Escape, as per their latest hint.

Awesome news considering how poor the current disc is.

Scorsese states Criterion is putting out Italianamerican (start at 23 minutes). This is only 49 minutes long, so I wonder if this will be a special feature. Hopefully on After Hours, but it would make more sense with one of his early features like ADLHA. Maybe they will be doing a few of his early WB stuff as well like WTKAMD.

Criterion released Italianamerican on Laserdisc back in the day as part of a "Three by Scorsese" triple feature with the 55-minute American Boy and the 6-minute The Big Shave. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're planning again.

https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/09782...ee-by-Scorsese

American Boy is the movie that Tarantino lifted the heroin OD/needle to the heart scene in Pulp Fiction from. The story is told in dialogue in American Boy, and Tarantino dramatized it.

^ He lifted the storytelling drawl and the fight from American Boy and put that in Reservoir Dogs, too.

ItalianAmerican and American Boy are both on Youtube -- that's how I watched them a few weeks ago.

I'd like to actually see the movie before getting worked up about who releases the blu-ray. And of course that means no UHD.

IMDb says it was shot in 8K. It is a shame that it won’t get a UHD release.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Probably best to stop wishing for Criterion to release UHD - it's just not going to happen.

The funny thing is that we'd always hear from people wanting a title to be released by Criterion, but for those who are buying 4K discs - the opposite is probably happening.
With the studio handling it, at least there'll be a chance for a UHD release - especially if it's a film that was recently in theatres. But as soon as you hear that Criterion will be releasing it, then you know UHD won't happen.

rocket1312 12-07-19 01:51 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Generally speaking, I'm not really interested in Criterion releasing contemporary titles, regardless of format. I get why it makes sense for both sides, but it's not the sort of thing I'm looking for from them. The 4k thing is just additional salt in the wound.

Giles 12-07-19 10:55 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

honestly with Criterion now doing a deal with NEON, it'd be the perfect time to debut a title in 4K UHD - say, um like 'Apollo 11' with all the extras and commentary track that were left off of Universal's bluray edition.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I still think it's highly unlikely they'll do 4K discs, but I could see them embracing 4K streaming on Criterion Channel only for titles where a 4K master exists.

There’s at least the possibility of a UHD release overseas. Not that I’ve come across any murmurs on that front in this case, though.

The problem with Leave Her to Heaven is that the original elements are long gone. Unless Criterion has conjured up some sort of voodoo magic, don't expect this one too look like The Red Shoes or The River or *insert any other high profile Technicolor release from Criterion*. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't expect this to look any better than the Twilight Time disc, which was fine, but not what it could've been.

A lot of directors were messing around with MiniDV around that time. It has not aged well.

I guess they aren't doing their traditional NYD clue.

Looks like a Fellini box (it is his Centennial, maybe a set like Bergman), Wong Kar-Wei box, Agnes Varda box, Bruce Lee box.

I was unable to figure out ANY of those. Thanks.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

If that clue really is a Bruce Lee box set, I will probably only be interested if Criterion has gotten access to some good original elements to work some magic with a new/restored scan and transfer of his Hong Kong films. At this point, I can't imagine any new special features that wouldn't have significant overlap with the exhaustive extras I have from other releases over the years. Ten years ago, I might have been more excited for the prospect of this happening.

Brian T 01-01-20 04:17 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Really surprised if they’re doing a Bruce Lee set so (relatively) soon after Shout’s exhaustive collection and the various spin-off releases they got from that. But I suppose licences do expire. The WKW set might be interesting if they renew whatever licences necessary to include titles they’ve already released on Blu AND add additional titles. Or better yet, a box of titles they haven’t done yet: As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time (with the Redux AND Jeff Lau’s wild and inseparable Eagle Shooting Heroes as supplements), Fallen Angels, Happy Together. Kino did some of these ages ago, but a complete box with new extras would be nice. Mind you, I can think of about 20 Hong Kong filmmakers as deserving as Wong for this treatment, especially now that TRUE Hong Kong cinema is essentially trapped in amber for the proper study of its importance beyond WKW, Bruce and Jackie.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Now that would be interesting. He’s only directed 11 films, and one of those was an anthology. However, among the remaining ten would be My Blueberry Nights, which is his least consequential film and not really Criterion-grade. Should be interesting to see what’s in store. I do still wish Criterion would showcase a Hong Kong filmmaker whose work was more quintessentially Hong Kong than WKW, though. I love many of his shows, but he became an international art house/festival darling so quickly, and his films haven’t always been big box-office in Hong Kong, and so aren’t entirely representative.

I wonder if they’ll dust off all of his old commercials as supplements. His short for the BMW “The Hire” series was one of the standouts.

First Roma, and now Marriage Story will be part of the CC. I really hope the partnership of Netflix and Criterion expands and grows. If they do get their hands on The Irishman, there wouldn't be a more opportune time to test the 4K waters.

Are they adding extras? Otherwise, I'll just stick to Netflix for my viewings (although honestly, I have no desire to sit through EITHER Roma or Marriage Story again...although if The Irishman gets a CC treatment with bonus materials, I'd buy that).

Roma:

  • 4K digital master, supervised by director Alfonso Cuarón, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • Road to “Roma,” a new documentary about the making of the film, featuring behind-the-scenes footage and an interview with Cuarón
  • Snapshots from the Set, a new documentary featuring actors Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira, producers Gabriela Rodríguez and Nicolás Celis, production designer Eugenio Caballero, casting director Luis Rosales, executive producer David Linde, and others
  • New documentaries about the film’s sound and postproduction processes, featuring Cuarón; Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay, and Craig Henighan from the postproduction sound team; editor Adam Gough; postproduction supervisor Carlos Morales; and finishing artist Steven J. Scott
  • New documentary about the film’s ambitious theatrical campaign and social impact in Mexico, featuring Celis and Rodríguez
  • Trailers
  • Alternate French subtitles and Spanish SDH for the film
  • PLUS: Essays by novelist Valeria Luiselli and historian Enrique Krauze, along with (Blu-ray only) writing by author Aurelio Asiain and production-design images with notes by Caballero

Marriage Story hasn't officially been announced yet.

Can someone explain the bottom two New Years puns for me? I'm especially intrigued by the possibility of a Bruce Lee box.
