I'm convinced that Criterion leaks the answers to its doodles through plants in the fan community that act like they've instantly interpreted the brilliant clues, then spread that information around to let people feel like they'd figured it out themselves. Because otherwise, there is zero way anyone could possibly look at a slightly slanted "E" and deduce that it means Fellini because it's a "fallen E." Frankly, that's just stupid.

These really aren't any better. At best, they're total groaners. "Bruised Lee"? Seriously, f*** you to whoever drew that.

For Bruce, I might have doodled a letter 'B' beside a glass/drops of water. In a box, of course. I got the 'Bruised Lee' one purely by accident when I first saw it, but then I kept doubting it because I wasn't really sure that if that was supposed to be Robert E. Lee, and I seriously doubted Criterion would release a Lee set so soon after Shout's comprehensive version (this also makes me wonder how long a Criterion Lee edition will remain in print, due to Fortune Star's short licensing terms or whatever). Still, I find most of their doodles to be groaners, albeit in a good, social media-savvy way, and I'm sure they're quite happy to have them viewed as such simply because they keep people talking.

Bruce Lee aside (the most obvious of the 4), I'm pretty sure all of these releases were already expected, so not hard to connect the dots.

And the clues are fine. Historically some are better than others, but I couldn't imagine wasting 3 seconds being bothered by any of it.

- Janus Films and the Criterion Collection announces “The World of Wong Kar-wai” which celebrates the 20th anniversary of his iconic film In the Mood for Love.

- This film retrospective will include 4K restorations of his films such as As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, Happy Together, and Fallen Angels.

- It also includes the US premiere of the newly restored Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love.

Seems this is just a tour apparently? Still hopeful that the eventual boxed set includes ASHES OF TIME and THE GRANDMASTER, for the sake of completeness.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yes, it’s the retrospective but pretty good indicator of what will be in the box.

Maybe announcement will come today with title announcements, but I’d imagine it would have to a later than June release. And April is announced today.

April:
Army of Shadows
Destry Rides Again
The Cremator
Me and You and Everyone We Know
The Grand Budapest Hotel

How many damn releases does that title need?! Does Bruce Campbell need another boat or something?!

Maybe Bruce Campbell bought the rights to the Melville film.

Ugh... another Wes Anderson. Doubt the transfer will be much better than the current $7.99 BD.

I know... just hate hearing it every time one is announced - as it always feels like an unnecessary release.

It's been 5 years and hundreds of releases since the last one (Moonrise Kingdom) came out. It'll be ok.

Not really excited. Army of Shadows is excellent, but I already have it. I'm surprised at Me and You and Everyone We Know, I remember disliking it for being one of those quirky pretentious hipster indie films.

Some of us held off buying the prior disc waiting for the inevitable Criterion.

I'm in for Grand Budapest as well, but I think I like the cover for the initial release better - which is a rare thing, to like the studio release cover better than the Criterion cover.

Criterion has had a few (or more) really horrible covers over the years.

I own 11 copies of Army of Darkness already, but I'd also *kill* for a Criterion edition with a proper new transfer and new extras.

Cult Films in the UK just announced that the're releasing 8 1/2 in what they call a "new 2k restoration" (exactly how new is not stated), plus a Fellini four film box set that includes that film, La Dolce Vita, Juliet of the Spirits, and I Vitelloni. I wonder if Criterion's "fallen E" hint is essentially going to be a Region A version of that?

Would be disappointing if Criterion winds up reissuing their existing discs for 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita and making fans rebuy them to get the other two titles. I'd really like a nice edition of Juliet of the Spirits. Cult Films released that one on Blu-ray in the UK a while ago in what I believe was a sped-up 50Hz transfer. The announcement doesn't say anything about a remaster, unfortunately. Not much info on I Vitelloni either.

Idk... I would think they would do something like the did with the Bergman set. Basically, every title they have of his (plus any newly acquired) on Blu in a box. As I mentioned previously, it is his centennial as well. The unfortunate thing is Fellini had much less output than Bergman.

I think StudioCanal has Nights of Cabiria, though. Without that in the set... eh...

edit: I saw this over on reddit, not sure if true: "Lee Kline from Criterion said on the Home Theater Forum Podcast a couple of weeks ago that new restorations of Fellini’s films are in the works and that Criterion will almost certainly be putting out a Bergman-esque boxset of his films."

One can hope that a lesser number of films would mean a smaller price tag than the Bergman set.

I just hope the Fellini set has a more shelf friendly box than the Bergman set. If you can't display them proudly on your shelf are they really even worth owning?

If they do it right it shouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of confidence they'll do it right.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Irishman is going to be the litmus test for whether or not Criterion will ever go 4K. If The Irishman doesn't get a 4K release, I think it's pretty safe to say it'll NEVER happen. Netflix didn't say anything other than Criterion will be releasing these titles. The Irishman is the biggest, most mainstream title they've announced in a decade. So there's a chance, we might get lucky. But if they don't do it for this. It's game over. My 2 cents anyhow.

Coral 01-25-20 08:02 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Irishman was released 2 months ago, which means the DVD/BD should be released in the next 2 months - especially if they want to try to capitalize off of the Oscar buzz (even if it's shutout). Has there been even an inkling that Criterion will be releasing UHDs at this point? I figure if we're only 2 months away from a UHD, we would have heard something by now.

As I said earlier in this thread, it's gotta be disappointing for UHD adopters to learn that Criterion is releasing a new title - as it means 4K won't happen.

No, it won't. They've announced their slate through April. I can't see Netflix allowing a disc until atleast November 2020.
