Nice. I'll have to snag that with some of the credit I'm getting back from Amazon...
Edit: Amazon no longer has it marked down that low... |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Can't wait for Heaven's Gate. But I am a little disappointed with the lack of special features. I've been envisioning a Heaven's Gate Criterion release for several years as its one of my favorite films of all time. But whenever I pictured it I saw it as a release the magnitude of their Fanny & Alexander set. the 3 hour 33 minute cut, the long speculated 5 hour 20 min cut. Michael Cimino commentary. The Final Cut :The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate Documentry and perhaps a new making of documentry that doesn't cast the film in such a negative light and presents some opposing views from people that have positive things to say about the film. Because there actually ARE people who like this film. But whatever. I'll take what I can get. I already sold my dvd in anticipation of the BLU set.

But yeah - totally -- Why not Transformers? Serious note though - I wouldn't mind seeing a nice release of Bay's 'The Island'. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Disney is the one you should be rallying for a release with the Criterion extras. They licensed all the extras from the Criterion edition of The Rock.
Honestly though, I always found the Armageddon's CC extras to be pretty light. I never understood why it needed to be on two discs. I literally went "that's IT?!" when I finished the second disc. The commentary with Bay & Affleck on Disc 1 is classic though. I just kept the CC and haven't gotten the BD. Honestly, it has the best non-anamorphic video I've seen to this day. It's still mighty purty for a glorified laserdisc port. |

The Lincoln Center in NY is showing a restored 35mm print of Following. I wonder if that means an announcement this week or sometime this year?

DVDBeaver on Eating Raoul.
What a pleasure to see this looking so good, and one of the greatest leaps in quality over a DVD ever, as Sony's edition was authored incorrectly (stretched or squeezed image, depending on whether you tried to view it 16x9 or 4x3) along with a very weak encode with tons of compression artifacts, crawling grain, you name it. Thank you Criterion! BTW, this makes an excellent double feature with Godard's Week End :) |

Are announcements tomorrow? Or will we have to wait for Monday?

December is usually a light month, so don't be too surprised if there are only two or three releases.
Anyways, Criterion posted this about their December releases on Facebook: Here's a hint: The Blu-ray upgrade is one of our most anticipated... It will make a lot of people very happy. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm 99.9% sure it's Brazil.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, that's most likely - and it's the one that would probably get the most people excited. I'll keep hoping until Monday, though.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
They need to upgrade Picnic at Hanging Rock. So I'm hoping that's it.

Also, "the" blu-ray upgrade means they're only doing one this month. Come to think of it, have they even been doing more than that recently? |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, I would also guess Brazil based on that message.
I owned the letterbox DVD and replaced it with the anamorphic DVD when it came out. I'll definitely pick up the Blu-ray, but probably not right away. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Brazil would be awesome.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Count me in as someone who'd drool over Brazil. I have the original non-anamorphic edition and this would be awesome. I just can't believe it's taken so long.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm sure Criterion's version of Brazil will be great. But the Universal BD isn't to be shrugged off as it is the original US theatrical version (which BTW, is also a "director's cut"), and in some ways is superior to Gilliam's later directors cut, IMO.

Dug around on Wikipedia, they're respectively 132 , 142 and 94 minutes?

Gilliam said a few years back that he made new features for the BD. I'd like to see what those were.

Would be nice to see an upgrade of M. Hulot's Holiday.
I'm also holding out hope for Y Tu Mama Tambien. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
so is it a pipedream that Criterion would ever do a remaster of 'Robocop' - has that ship sailed?

Honestly, pick up the Criterion disc and the Blu-ray and call it a day. The Robocop extras were a slide-based visual essay, storyboard comparisons, and a commentary. It's VERY laserdiscy (as it's a copy of the laserdisc, transfer and all). There's no documentary or deleted scenes. I'm actually staring at the disc right now and it's hilarious that back in 1998 one of Criterion's special features is "Optimal image quality: RSDL dual layer edition". |

perish the thought that MGM could do what Lionsgate did and get Verhoeven actually involved in doing a new transfer. I think I own every video incarnation of 'Robocop' - laserdisc, yes: the Criterion DVD (one step ahead of you Rob ;) ), the Robocop trilogy ediition. Have yet to open or view the Fox bluray which I've read is a sucky transfer. ho hum... oh well. (maybe MGM/Fox will surprise me - but I ain't holding my breath) |
