re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
the only way for me to buy 'West Side Story' ... again... would be a 4K UHD edition, NOT a Criterion edition... well, unless there are more extras, and a mix that mirrors the 70mm 6-track sound design but not mixed as 7.1.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I assume if it is WSS, that Criterion is going to take the opportunity to correct the opening credits which rankled many fans by incorrectly introducing a fade out/fade in right before titles come up. I think there was another relatively small problem that I can't recall atm.
I never saw the film theatrically, so I don't see the flaws as problems. But there are many fans that do. IIRC, WSS was also released by Criterion on LD so editorially at least any supplement package for it is more or less ready to go. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Someone be honest with me : is there any real reason to upgrade Seven Samurai from Criterion DVD to Blu Ray? It's a very old B& W film. I'm sure it looks better in Blu Ray, but is it a night & day sort of thing? I almost grabbed it at Costco for $20, but then I thought that my version was probably good enough for the one or two more times I'll watch it in my lifetime.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
As I recall, the Blu-ray has the entire film on one disc, whereas the DVD is split between two discs.
Other than that... |

Pretty night & day to me and worth $20. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I forgot about the window-boxing on the DVD.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
YMMV but my equation for upgrading is scaled according to the the quality of the film itself, even if the quality of the presentation is only marginally improved. In this case I think the image quality improvement is significantly noticeable and given that Seven Samurai is one of the best movies of all time, it is well worth the upgrade in my opinion. It looks absolutely gorgeous.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Okay folks, you've convinced me to upgrade. Thanks for the input.

Oh man Rumble Fish is going to be great. Those new interviews sound great and I hardly ever hear from Hinton herself. Be great to see the vintage interviews too...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
damn it took a long time to get Francis Coppola on Criterion. Not a lot of the greats left who haven't made an appearence on the label.
I'd shit myself if anything Werner Herzog got announced. He's one of the last hold outs. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
TAMPOPO is the big one for me, but I'll probably get RUMBLE FISH and WOMAN OF THE YEAR at the next B&N sale.

BTW, when is Criterion releasing "Women on the verge of a Nervous Breakdown"? Their IG feed posted a picture of the pressed disc. |

How is Rumble Fish? I guess I've heard of the movie, but not much about it.
Wish they were doing The Outsiders or Cotton Club instead. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
RF is great. Dillon and Rourke in their prime. and Coppola behind the camera. gold. just a beautiful and gripping film.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
How did I miss Being There coming out next month? I loved that movie as a kid. That's a must-buy for me.

IMO it's Coppola's fifth best film. It also has a great cast. Besides Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, and Diane Lane. It also has Vincent Spanish, Nicolas Cage, Lawrence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper, Diana Scarwid, Tom Waits, Chris Penn and William Smith. |

I think he's referring to the Criterions Barry Jenkins picked from the closet - if you didn't feel like watching the clip.
