6 hours long cut or bust

and yes I'm serious

Hear, hear! That's great news on Close-up, particularly as it includes an entire second film. Criterion's Blu-ray line-up is bar-none the finest in the industry, with WB a distant second.

Criterion Blu-Ray BADLANDS would be right up there with Criterion Blu-Ray À BOUT DE SOUFFLE in awesomeness.

Not sure if this is the right place to mention it, but apparently Milos Foreman has been contacted by Criterion to be part of an upcoming TAKING OFF release. Amazing of them to be the ones to untangle the music rights for a first-ever home video release after 40 years.

I always liked how this movie came out the same year as Saving Private Ryan, while all my friends were raving about that movie, I was like you should see The Thin Red Lion it's way better, man. :)

I always preferred TRL over SPR too.

I'm pretty sure the clue is for "The Thin Red Line," but you have to remember that the clue for del Toro's "Chronos" came in the October 2009 newsletter and there still hasn't been a release date set for it. Maybe by the end of the year, we'll have "The Thin Red Line."

It looks like the Pierrot le fou BD is back up for order on Amazon, says "in stock on April 3, 2010".

Amazon started raising their BD prices. I have Yojimbo/Sanjuro ordered, but I'll have to wait for a sale to pick up some of the others I want.

Getting worried... Yojimbo/Sanjuro hasn't shipped yet and I have people coming over for Sanjuro tomorrow. Come on Amazon!

I thought it was going OOP? That's why I bought it last month.

It's $26.96 at Criterion's store. It's on backorder.

My Yojimbo/Sanjuro set arrived this morning via Amazon.

Edit: Yojimbo looks and sounds great. Criterion did a very nice job. The Perspecta-Surround is pretty cool. Haven't popped in Sanjuro yet.

I really want this now, but cannot possibly justify paying the prices for it everywhere. B&N will surely have another 50% sale where I can get this for over 60% with all the combined coupons.

Yes, they certainly will.

Bigger Than Life arrived today, going to watch it maybe this weekend.

The Amazon pre-order price I got was about $45, which was decent for two discs packaged together. And Yojimbo happens to be one of my all time favorite films with one of my all time favorite performances by one of my two all time favorite actors, so it seemed justified to me.

Haven't checked the entire thread but why are Criterions blu ray editions region locked?
It sucks and comes as a surprise since most of their dvd releases are region free.

Giles 03-26-10 06:10 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

they are locked just as Master of Cinema/BFI discs are B locked it's so one comparny/country has the advantage of being not imported and superceded in turn by say Criterion's versions. That's of course changing with the advent of region free bluray players on the market

jodokast78 03-26-10 06:31 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I dont get it? So if they want to release their films on regionfree bluray? They cant due sales regulations? I mean they are losing out customers this way... It will take ages before I buy an extra blu ray player besides my newly bought PS3!!!

Adboy151 03-26-10 06:49 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It's not a question of they don't want to or are purposely losing sales, Criterion may simply not have the distribution rights to a particular title in another region, say Europe which is largely Region B.

Foreign distributors have been flexing more muscle of late to maintain their own catalogs on their own turf (see Studio Canal's pull-back of several titles from Criterion).

On the flip side, more domestic studios seem to be more open to licensing titles to Criterion.

You must not really get how the distribution and importation and rights and etc works out. That is one of the things to learn and ease your mind.

Thanxs for the replys guys. Still think its a bit odd. I'll guess I'll have to keep my eyes out for a bluray player that is free from regional coding then.

For those with access to the Sundance Channel, Jan Troell's "Everlasting Moments" will be on at 2:20am this Sunday morning. "Everlasting Moments" will be released on blu-ray June 29th by Criterion.

"The Friends Of Eddie Coyle" will also be on TCM tonight at 11:45pm for those that haven't seen it. It's already released on DVD by Criterion.

M. Hulot's Holiday and Dillinger is Dead posters were added to the store.

I wish they did more of these! Has anyone purchased any? I've been eyeing the Rashomon one and wanted to know if they are good quality.

I purchased The Seventh Seal and Jules and Jim "50 Years of Janus Films" posters. I would say that they are very good quality and they come shipped in very strong tubes with "paper" wrapped around the poster (think of a piece of paper rolled over top of the poster itself. Even with all of this protection, mine were still slightly bent near the corners, but not enough for me to send them back.

I would definitely recommend them. I would post pictures, but I rolled them back up in the tubes until I can get some decent frames for them.

I kind of have my eye on that Pierrot Le Fou poster, too.
