The Criterion Red River looks stacked compared to the MoC version. Absolute buy for me.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Ace in the Hole and Life Aquatic.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
No DVD with Life? So random.

Those claiming it would be out a few months after the initial release were certainly jumping the gun. Criterion releases of both The Darjeeling Limited and Fantastic Mr. Fox came out years after the initial releases.

Overlord is the same way. I'm wondering if they're basing it off of the supply of dvd's they have.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Also, I see a lot of used copies of the DVD of The Life Aquatic where I buy used discs. Only titles like Royal Tenenbaums, Chasing Amy, Armageddon, etc show up more. Also, it was released in a single disc and two disc versions, so there's a lot out there.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
So what's up with the inconsistent packaging on these dual-formats?
City Lights was in a clear case that more-or-less fit the other Chaplin Criterions. Now, I get Fantastic Mr. Fox and Foreign Correspondent and both are in cardboard fold-out packages with clear disc holders (2 on one side, 1 on the other) in cardboard slipcovers. Don't get me wrong, they look nice, but are a bit of a shock because they are as wide on a shelf as the old fat 2-disc amaray cases and a little taller than standard blu-ray cases. It also makes less sense for them to sell clear replacement cases and artwork for their earlier cardboard package releases (done to allow people have more consistent Criterion collections) if they're just going to switch things up again. What's the pattern on packaging for the dual format releases so far? |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
City Lights is only 2 discs, thus it gets a plastic case. Anything 3 discs or more gets a cardboard digipack at this point. I can't speak to the size of the 3 disc digipacks, as I haven't seen one yet. Are they significantly bigger than say, Seven Samurai or Night of the Hunter? It wouldn't surprise me if Criterion comes up with a 3 disc plastic case at some point, but it would have to be pretty wide to accommodate the typical Criterion booklet.

I've also seen several 3 disc Bluray cases, so not sure why Criterion couldn't get access to those either. |

Weak ending not withstanding, it's a fantastic film, one of the best westerns, and one of Hawks finest. Can't believe you've never seen it!

usually, but I found it interesting that Janus Films was credited on a recent screening of Ridley Scott's Alien - that's a bluray that doesn't need another version as it has pretty much everything but the kitchen sink.

It has the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, the toenail clippings from Sigourney Weaver's hairdresser, and it beams signals to the mothership, it's insane how much stuff it has. On that subject, I have the Legacy, Quadriology (That's not a word) and Anthology boxed sets, is there anything exclusive to any of them, or should I just sell off the old sets and keep the Blu?
All of the documentary and supplemental features from the Quadrilogy have been ported over to the Anthology, though instead of each movie getting its own bonus disc, these have now been relegated to two different bonus discs--essentially, Disc 5 and Disc 6. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
So you all know there's a 50% off flash sale going on Criterion's site right now, yes?
I picked up Fantastic Mr. Fox, Tess, Rashomon, 12 Angry Men, and Seconds. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yep, I think it better to wait for the B&N sale.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I got home from work a few hours after the flash sale started, and most of the more recent releases were already gone.
I managed to order a few though. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Did they say they were sold out or that they were on backorder? Tess said it was on backorder but it still let me purchase it. They even split up my order and didn't charge me shipping for the smaller portion.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Virtual spree up to what. 10 movies. 20? All of them?

I went ahead and gave it a try after seeing your post and it didn't work. So if you did get it for half off, than kudos. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, this is my order:
http://i.imgur.com/QxI1YYO.png Tess was listed as backordered, and even though I chose send in one shipment, they split it off into a separate shipment for no extra shipping fee. |
