re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The Region B Blu-ray of Mulholland Drive from Studio Canal is pretty decent. The movie's cinematography has always been a bit cheap-looking owing to its TV roots.
Universal has the American distribution rights for the movie, so a potential Criterion edition would have to be licensed from them. Criterion got Brazil and a few other titles out of Universal, so it's definitely possible. We already know that Eraserhead is in the works. That will no doubt be a direct port of existing foreign Blu-ray editions (which look great). Lost Highway (also a Univeral title on these shores) is pretty badly in need of remastering. The foreign Blu-rays for that one are very mediocre. |

I wonder if they'll darken the nudity like they did on the dvd.
If you have your Brightness levels set properly, this is a non-issue. You're not supposed to be able to see anything in the shadows there in the first place. This only became a controversy when people paused the scene and cranked up the Brightess hoping to catch a glimpse of Harring's pubes. |

One thing's for sure, it's a total Day 1 purchase from me. And I mostly tend to wait for half off sales. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm not saying they're definitely going to release this, and I would agree that this tweet alone doesn't mean a thing, but there's been other evidence that Criterion has Mulholland Dr. For example, I know awhile back that clips from the movie were pulled from YouTube and the note said "by request of Universal/Criterion Collection" (or something like that). I think there's been a few things that when taken together would indicate a Criterion Mulholland Dr. is likely.

I rented Mulholland Dr. shortly after it was released on DVD and I hated it. I didn't even finish it as I recall. But I've heard so many great things about I'd like to give it another chance. And a Criterion release would be perfect. It wouldn't be the first time I revisited a film I didn't care for only to have a change of heart on a second viewing years later.

Are any of the Merchant Ivory titles on BD? Don't Criterion usually have an announcement on their site listing the titles? |

I really hope Criterion has something big up their sleeve for IaMMMMW, because otherwise it does seem like a completely unnecessary release.
Not that it matters that much to me anyways - in spite of all the talent involved, I've never found the film to be particularly funny. And it's waaaay too long. |

Ice Storm ...little disappointed on the video review, but still a buy nonetheless.

I'm not surprised. I was told (off the record) by one director who is on criterion that they had ported over one of his DVDs to Blu-ray and he was upset they even added his director-approved sticker.

I don't understand. Are you saying that you're not surprised that The Ice Storm has a sub-par transfer? Or are you saying you're not surprised that Criterion released a sub-par transfer? I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I honestly just don't understand what one has to do with the other or what you're trying to get at.

No worries. Sorry about that. I'm not surprised to hear that Criterion released a DVD port on blu-ray of The Ice Storm, hence the sub-par transfer. That is exactly what I heard from one director who had that happen with one of his films being "upgraded" from DVD to BR. So what I was trying to say is that I at least know of one other occasion where Criterion has released a blu-ray version of a DVD and did nothing to remaster it for BR and never truly got director approval.
So even if it's a 2k transfer that was good enough for DVD, it's become apparent with other Blus (from other studios also) that those transfers just aren't good enough. A lot of fans on Star Trek forums that aren't really into the how and why of Bluray think the Trek movie box set Blurays (particularly the first six movies) are simply upconverted DVDs because they don't have the same level of detail as some of their other Blurays. |

Although they have been all but confirmed, it might interest some to know that The Brood and Scanners have been added to Criterion's iTunes channel.

If anyone feels like taking a look at my owned titles and recommend anything they feel are 'must haves' that I might be missing, I'm taking suggestions in preparation for the B&N sale!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
So I'm thinking of blind buying the Three Colors Trilogy during the sale, and I was wondering if you guys could help me out with that decision. It seems like it has a lot of themes I'm really in to (mostly character driven, kind of sad, romantic, beautiful, introspective, etc.) but I feel weird spending that much money on a set of movies I haven't seen yet. Are they really feely?

Take that for whatever it's worth. I seem to be in a minority with that opinion. |

They are far better than a large percentage of the art house tripe in Criterion's catalog. |
