re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm still waiting for my dream announcement for the release of Sorcerer via CC. Fuck. What'd I'd love to see w/ CC on that film. Also..they have the original so the remake would be a nice addition to their collection just for that purpose alone.

I didn't know that about their 2 disc titles. I figured Che and Carlos were warranted because those were long.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I watched The Decameron last night. I enjoyed it, but was thrown off by the heavy use of ADR. Did Passolini use live microphones on set, or was the entire film dubbed? I thought some of the actors might have been non-Italians saying their lines in their native tongues, and had their dialogue dubbed later on.

In many cases, the dialogue may not have even been written until post-production. Fellini was famous for having his actors just recite their grocery lists to get their lips moving. |

^ ^^ Thanks, I thought that might have been the case. I know this proctice was prevalent in the HK film industry, I just didn't know it was the same in Italy.

Nice clue, especially as Henry Winkler has the same initials as Haskell Wexler.

I've never heard of it either, but I saw on Wikipedia it's been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
It also has Robert Forester in it so yeah probably pretty cool.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
OOoooooh...Robert Forester.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Any chance that they have been able to license the Wild Man Fischer song that had to be changed during the roller derby scene ("Merry-go-round")? Knowing just a little about it, I suspect not.

Talking about The Shining...correct me if I'm wrong. Doesn't The Shining have issues. OAR not being maintained and I think colors being a little bit off at times?

Discussing Kubrick and OAR is opening an enormous can of worms.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Yeah, the aspect ratio on the Shining BD is fine, but the pink tennis ball and toy truck are absurd and inexplicable. It takes me out of the movie every time.

colors.
I understand the OAR issue. In some shots it feels compressed for sure but overall looks fine from what I've seen. Still irks me though...changing an OAR. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The challenge with aspect ratios with Kubrick's later pictures is that he used multiple ratios within a film, so you almost have to go scene by scene.
The major issue with The Shining is that it doesn't offer the European cut of the film. (European cut is actually shorter.) From what I understand, this was Kubrick's preferred cut of the film. As for Criterion, I have strong doubts that Warners would license this out. I will say, that it's somewhat likely Criterion will release the Room 237 documentary. If so, they are going to have to clear the rights to all the clips from The Shining, so maybe they could convince Warners to let the have it under the condition that it's part of a box with Room 237. There is some precedent for this, see: North by Northwest in the Universal Hitchcock set or the Warner Kazan titles in the Fox set. Still a pipe dream at most. |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...rt/shining.jpg Notice the notes on the right. "THE FRAME IS EXACTLY 1-1:85. Obviously you compose for that but protect the full 1-1:33 area." That should put the argument to rest for all time. |
