I usually never get lucky on early releases. But I was in Walmart looking for the new Spaceballs BD. They didn't have any, but they did have their replenishment stock on the floor in boxes. So I was looking in there for a copy, and saw a box labeled "hold for 8/14". It had about 8 copies of Jaws in it. So I quietly snagged one out of the box and proceeded towards the front registers. $19.96 out the door.

Jaws looked great. The daytime scenes on the Orca were very solid, crystal clear with really strong color. I have a 7.1 setup, so that's the audio I went with. If there was surround effects, they must have been very subtle as I couldn't hear anything. Williams' classic score sounded terrific though. The main theme gets most of the attention, but the other parts of the score fantastic. Particularly the sequence where Brody and Hooper find Ben's chewed up boat.
I watched both documentaries. The Shark is Still Working was sort of a bore to me. I much preferred the older making-of doc, which was upconverted. That was much more informative and features some great set stories.

I haven't watched it yet, but I was pleased to find a full-length version (108 minutes instead of 77) of the documentary online. I'm planning on watching all four films (720p versions of 2-4) plus the two docs on Tuesday.

It sounds like that's what they've done with this one. The DVD's surround tracks had newly recorded sounds that were distracting, so the mono track was desirable on the re-release. It's good to have it for purists' sake anyway, but it sounds like this new track is worth choosing.

It's hard to compare to one of the best movies ever made. It's definitely the best of the 3 though. The annoying kids is what most ruins it for me. 3 and 4 are both abysmal with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Personally I'd treat 3 and 4 like a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. Just have fun with how bad they are.

For those who care about disc artwork, the Best Buy digibook has actual artwork, which is rare for a Universal release. The standard combo pack just has JAWS printed in red on it.
They did just a knockout job on the restoration. The movie really looks superb. Seeing it on BD reminded me of just how truly great this film is. It did sort of create the "Summer Blockbuster", but it's just a great movie in general. And it is kind of broken into 2 parts, similar to Full Metal Jacket. The first half features all the town bureaucracy and beach attacks, and the planning/discussion of how to take the shark out. And then 2nd half is all Orca with the last 15-20 minutes being some of the greatest thrills we've ever seen in a movie.
The fact that the production was such a difficult task makes me appreciate it even more. It's remarkable, and shows the massive talent of Spielberg, that the film turned out the way it did, when you consider all the troubles they had with not only the shark, but the filming location as well.

Am I the only one that thinks Jaws: The Revenge is the best sequel?
Jaws 3 is complete crap... 2 is just a rehash. At least 4 had some original ideas. Not saying its 10/10... it's a 5/10 while 2&3 are even worse

I remember catching a documentary that was a pretty detailed account on what went on behind the scenes of this movie about a year ago on TV. I never caught the name, so I wonder if this might be the same.

That was a pretty decent documentary that, as far as I know, is NOT on the new release.

I really have no idea. All I remember is that it was pretty much about how everything went wrong on set.
