The Thing - Why Is This So Hard To Find?

My local FYE's don't have it, my Best Buy doesn't have it, and the website says it's not even available for pick-up in store! My local Barnes and Noble is the only place that has it, what's going on?

Probably a simple miscalculation on demand of this film. It was widely available on HD DVD, but not so sure for the Blu-ray version. Due to all the other competing titles coming out on Blu-ray, it's possible a small run of Blu-ray titles were made just to see if it was worth it.

I'm just glad I can go out today and pick it up in at least one location... as long as it's still there. Strike me as guilty, but I've never seen this film, and have meant to for years and years, and years.... and years. Now is the time!

Amazon.com has it. I got my two days after buying it from them.

Yeah, I wanted to watch it this weekend though, and I don't order anything online unless I have to. Too many issues in the past with things being off spindles and such, ya know?

On the upside, Blu-ray discs are borderline-indestructible, so a disc falling off the spindle during shipping doesn't really matter. I've probably had at least 15-20 "floaters" on Blu-ray wind up in my mailbox, and I've never spotted a scratch on 'em.

Oh, I'm aware Adam I've recieved screeners with the disc off the spindle and they were not just scratch free, they were even scuff free! I love Blu-ray discs for their indestructability If it's available in my area though, I still get it in person, just because it's an instant gratification thing. I just picked up The Thing at my local Barnes and Noble, and I'm a happy camper. I just thought it was so odd that right near Halloween, this Blu-ray is practically nowhere to be found. I mean, it's not even like the Best Buy website said 'not available at this time at these stores'.... it said it's not available in stores, PERIOD. I thought it to be very strange.

Right. Who buys blu-rays at the store?

You taking the piss? Best Buy never has any new BD's cheaper than 27.99-29.99. I can get everything at amazon for several bucks less. AND get free shipping if the order is over $50.00 I have a shipping plant 20 minutes from me so it's there in a day or two anyway.

THE THING is hard to find because it can assimilate those around it. It may very well be your in the store, but under the physical identity of another disc.

(Sorry.)

Heh, that gave me a pretty good laugh Diesels, lol.

Btw, I got the film at my local Barnes and Noble as I said, and watched this movie finally for the first time. Wow, I've been missing out. Great flick!

Good one DieselsDen! And mzupeman2, shame on you for almost letting 25 years pass without seeing this EXCELLENT film! I have the HD (freebie), but I just ordered the Blu-ray from Amazon for $20. I will watch it (again) sometime next week - it's been awhile. The last time I saw it was on the bad non-anamorphic DVD on my old 4:3 tube set. Now I'll be seeing it on my 92 inch projector screen in HD!

The disc looks good Rocky, enjoy it!

Yeah, I meant to watch this every year for, an uncountable amount of years but, just never got to it. Sad I didn't, but at least I've seen it and own it now

FYI for those still looking... I've heard that the UK BR disc will have ALL of the extras on the Universal SE that the US BR lacks. And it will also (possibly) be region-free.

My favorite scene is still the blood test.

it better be since I just pre-ordered the disc from Amazon.co.uk (the street date is December 1)

This is the Swedish release of the bluray which will mirror the UK version:

I just got mine for Valentine's Day. My wife had to order it from DD. I was annoyed to find out that you cannot watch the behind the scenes separately from the movie. Especially after already having dumped my DVD.

Is this true? If so I'll be mad.

Can anyone confirm this? Are there any drawbacks to the UK version?

It's been confirmed.

I heard the US release suffers from a heavy application of DNR. Anyone know if the same can be said of the UK disc?

OK, but can anyone confirm bonus features compared to the US version?

Yep, UK BD has them all while the US BD drops some of the featurettes and makes the "big" one part of U-Control. The UK BD has all the features as the US HD DVD (UK BD does have DTS MA though)

since I own both versions, does anyone want to trade a title for 'The Thing' (US edition)?

Do you mean does NOT have?

I don't even remember what the other features were. I just wanted "Terror Takes Shape" but its chopped an minimized on top of the movie.

The UK version probably has that in PAL though, since I'm sure its in standard def.

The UK Blu-ray has DTS MA. The US Blu-ray has the same. The US HD DVD has DD+.

IIRC, all the extras on UK The Thing play fine (as that's why people are importing it)

Dammit! I already opened mine.

Can anyone with the UK version post a scan of the back cover please?
