What exactly are you (or are you not) looking for? DTS MA? Special Features?

The UK Blu-ray is top dog in everything and its a shuffle between the US Blu-ray (DTS MA, missing extras, DNRed) vs the HD DVD (DD+, all extras).

Here are the extras from the UK Version:
* Feature Commentary with John Carpenter & Kurt Russell
* The Thing: Terror Takes Shape
* Production Background Archive
* Production Photographs
* Production Art and Storyboards
* Location Design
* Production Archives
* The Saucer
* The Blairmonster
* Outtakes
* Post Production
* Theatrical Trailer
Pretty sure "Terror Takes Shape" is in U-Control (can't be viewed by itself, only in small bits) and a few of the smaller Production stuff is gone. Can't find a review of the UK BD.

That's exactly what I was looking for. If that is the same on the UK version, than I don't feel as bad having the US version. I like "Terror Takes Shape" and was hoping for version where it could be viewed separately.

As for the other features, I don't think I'm missing much. Were there any good outtakes? I can't recall.

I prefer the original 1950's version.

Are the UK extras SD or BD?

Re: The Thing - Why Is This So Hard To Find?

What size is the video file on the European version?

Is it the larger one done for the HD-DVD, or the more heavily compressed one created for the USA single layer BD?

When you say the doc is U-control, are you referring to the US or UK version?

^ U.S., U.K. version isn't bound by U-Control. I hate that feature.

The US HD DVD has the Doc by itself.
The US Blu-ray has the Doc incorporated into U-Control. Random bits play throughout the film and I have no idea if its "complete" like the HD DVD.
The UK Blu-ray has the Doc by itself.

Again...its a tough call. If you don't care about a dead format, I'd grab the HD DVD because it has ALL the features. The US Blu-ray drops a few smaller ones, puts the Doc in U-Control, adds a touch of icky DNR but has DTS MA.
The UK Blu-ray seems to be the top dog....but its a bit more expensive then either of the above options. Pick your poison.

Wouldn't the UK BD also have the DNR?

^ That's currently my million dollar question...

Also, where did that Thing HD/DVD Combo pic come from? Did Uni plan to make that a combo title and then backed out?

This is what I did just a few weeks ago. The only drawback of the HD DVD is DD+ vs. DTS HD-MA - something I was willing to sacrifice for the advantages in extras, transfer, and price since I have an HD DVD player.

IF its the same transfer then yes, I suppose it would. Putting it on a 50GB discs and changing the menu might mean its different though...but I've never seen anyone compare the UK and US BD.

Re: The Thing - Why Is This So Hard To Find?

Well this is one of the HD DVD's I did hang onto but I did the US BD as well. I probably should do some comparisons myself to see how it looks on my setup.

It was first listed as a combo but got switched prior to release.

DAMN! Now I'm irritated again. Where is the cheapest place to order he UK version from? This may bother me enough to have to upgrade my US Blu-ray.

Can anyone else confirm this please? Even all the ebay auctions I see for the UK version say "Picture-in-picture" or "U-Control" feature.

Other question - are the SD extras on the UK disc in PAL? If so, US buyers wouldn't be able to access them.

Here's the specs for the Holland release, which has the documentary by itself.

Shoot, hearing all this hullabaloo about the BD makes me want to buy a second HD DVD, just in case something happens to my current copy.

Pretty sure everything plays fine (otherwise people wouldn't be importing it as frequently as they are).

Re: The Thing - Why Is This So Hard To Find?

This is a stupid question, but I gotta ask: does the UK version play on good ol' USofA region BD players?
