Is the US BD release still hard to find? I did pick it up around Halloween of last year as part of the three-pack with Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead.

The UK version of Close Encounters doesn't come in the special case with the poster and book anymore. It's in the standard plastic case with just the 2 discs.

Re: The Thing - Why Is This So Hard To Find?
I finally sold my HD DVD player and movies, and The Thing was one of them. It was hard to see that one go. I finally rebought it on blu yesterday at Hastings for $9.99.
This has got to be one of the greatest horror movies ever. I wish Carpenter still made movies like this. I still hold on to my dvd version just to have the full "Terror Takes Shape" doc.

I've owned both the HD DVD and the BD, and I can't tell a difference between the two. I'm not saying that there is no DNR in the BD, as I've read that there is in fact DNR. I just don't think it's a significant amount. It still looks beautiful on my LG 47LW5600.

Maybe they'll release a new version once the prequel hits Blu-Ray next year. Anyone heard anything? I finally dumped my DVD version, but I'm not buying the Blu-Ray until it's done right (and if it isn't, I guess I could just grab the HD-DVD).

A) The Thing doesn't get a rerelease at all. The current release just gets shipped to stores with a voucher or code inside to get a free movie ticket to the remake.
B) It is rereleased, but they either use the same transfer, or give us another transfer that's also riddled with DNR, as has been the case with numerous Universal catalog transfers as of late.
I've been holding off on upgrading, in the vain hope that Universal DOES rerelease the title and do it right, but I don't have TOO much hope.

Stick with the last dvd version. The blu-ray doesn't have the entire documentary on it. I don't care if the picture quality is far superior. I'm sometimes just as much about the features as I am about the movie it's self.

I dunno, I'm more inclined to side with droidguy here. I see one of two scenarios:
A) The Thing doesn't get a rerelease at all. The current release just gets shipped to stores with a voucher or code inside to get a free movie ticket to the remake.
B) It is rereleased, but they either use the same transfer, or give us another transfer that's also riddled with DNR, as has been the case with numerous Universal catalog transfers as of late.

I can't see Universal re-releasing this with anything new. Aside from maybe a DVD (if they havn't already done so) or a free ticket for the remake, of course.

It's a prequel? I havn't been following the film at all so I assumed it was (another) remake.
