This bad news is that when Warner delivers the films sometime late next year, they will be of the theatrical versions of the films. The good news is that this decision was made because director Peter Jackson wants to save the extended versions for a super Blu-ray boxset to be released near the theatrical release of 'The Hobbit'.
So we have to wait until 2012 for the extended cut blu-rays?!? At least that's the date IMDB is currently projecting for The Hobbit [w w w.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/].

I have my extended versions upscaled through my PS3. I care not when the Blu-Ray versions are released.

You so lie. Now saying something like "I'm not holding my breath," or "I can manage waiting a few years" would be more believable.

Well for me it will still come down to if 1st are they in either TrueHD or DTS-HD/MA 2nd is Price. If the transfer is done as well as the SD versions(especially Fellowship) they should be OUTSTANDING!. IMO Fellowship is one of thee,if not thee best transfers EVER! To this day I still use it a reference disc.

2011 for The Hobbit, 2012 for the sequel. I'm amusing the EE BD's would be out in 2011 (at the latest).

God I hope Warner doesn't DNR them to death like they've done to most of their transfers.

Most of the excessive DNR seems to have been on New Line titles prior to WB taking over full control of their releases (Dark City, Pan's Labyrinth, etc). Excessive DNR on WB-controlled titles (which LOTR is now) seems to be less frequent and rather abitrary (and I suspect inherent to crappy masters in most cases).

I'll wait for the EE. I don't really care about having the TC's on BD.

I can't wait for this.
The last hd transfer was a bit artefacted.

Does anyone know if they're really shooting the hobbit?

^ well.. according to imdb (remember everything they post sometimes is not 100% accurate) Del Toro is to start shooting the film sometime in 2010. I read somewhere that 'The Hobbit' would be split into two movies, is that true?

Which HD transfer would that be? I wasn't aware of any HD transfer that was released for sale. Are you refering to ones that were shown on TV? Those artifacts could be from the cable company's compression if you are talking about those.

FYE is already taking orders for LOTR trilogy on BD for Xmas. They didnt have a date but said that the entire set was coming for $99. Ill wait for some proof but have my fingers crossed it includes both versions of each and all the extras and some BD exclusives.

$99? These MSRPs are getting ridiculous. You know they will just double-dip a year later with the EEs and then a year later with bonus stickers and buttons.

Don't forget the iron-on patches and temporary tattoos. I'm holding out for the one with the secret decoder ring and the 3/4 scale bust of Peter Jackson.

$99 at FYE is probably $69 everywhere else or lower. I found FYE to be one of the highest BD places yet. Most of their titles were $39.99 to $42.99 on the shelf with very few under $30 that werent used.

What HD transfer are you referring to? A viewing on cable? I don't think it was ever released on D-VHS.

Sad thing is, I worked for the company that made those stupid "gift set" things. What a pain in the ass it was when they all came broken.

I wonder if FYE will still be in business by December.

the HiDef projection I saw of 'Fellowship' last year at Wolf Trap (with a 'live' orchestral accompanyment) was stunning. ('Two Towers' will have the same set up for two August performances)

They never put out an HD version of these, that I know of and the ones they showed on TV were not very good. I also think it had more to do with the compression.
If Critter meant the SD version I would beg to differ. I think it was one of thee best transfers of movies, especially regarding the audio portion. The best one was Fellowship in DTS. Of all the HD movies I have, the few that come to mind that MAY rival Fellowship is Pan's Labyrinth(HD DVD),Batman Begins(HD DVD),Casino Royale(BD) oh and Titanic(SD version).
I just hope that they do as good of a job on the transfers on the BD versions.
