Yeah, I think other than No Country for Old Men and Superbad the last time I was so excited for a movie to hit home video was the first Kill Bill almost 5 years ago.

According to sources, Warner Home Video will ship more than 1 Million copies of the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight' to retailers, which represents the largest initial shipment of any Blu-ray title, ever. There has been a great deal of anticipation for the title, which is on schedule to be released on December 9th, and Warner appears to be share the same sentiments.

Just noticed the Best Buy sale price is $23.99, only 1 dollar more than the 2-disc DVD. That's very cool. :)

I know this goes without saying, but this disc is going to absolutely clean house over Christmas. Still hoping for the Bat Joker Cards exclusive art somewhere -- hey, preferably Best Buy at that price!

source: blu-ray.com http://www.videobusiness.com/article...?desc=topstory NOV. 7 | Warner Home Video’s The Dark Knight is expected to ship more than 1 million Blu-ray Disc units to retail for its Dec. 9 street date, according to sources, which is believed to be a first for the format. Warner execs declined to comment on the studio’s shipment plans. Earlier in the quarter, Paramount Home Entertainment said its Iron Man sold 500,000 Blu-ray copies in its first week on shelves, but it’s unclear how many units the studio shipped. Both titles underscore how far the format has come in a short period of time: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment set a record in March 2007 when it became the first studio to ship 100,000 Blu-ray copies of a title, Casino Royale. For much of the past year, Blu-ray copies averaged 5% to 10% of a title’s sales. Recent features, including Warner’s Speed Racer and Journey to the Center of the Earth reached more than 10%, and Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s The Incredible Hulk hit more than 14%, according to VB sister publication Variety. Iron Man’s Blu-ray version represented as much as 30% of sales at some retailers, though overall it was closer to 10%. Warner knows that with Dark Knight’s wild popularity and Blu-ray-friendly special effects, the title should be a winner at retail. However, the studio will still be greasing the wheel with many software bundling promotions in order to encourage customers to buy Blu-ray players in time for the Dec. 9 Dark Knight bow. “We have been working with key retailers to put together account specific offers, where we bundle a device or the PlayStation 3 remote with one of our titles, which gives the customers value in return,” said Dorinda Marticorena, Warner senior VP of worldwide marketing and high-def. “You will see a plethora of offers from Warner in November and December.” She believes that consumers are now especially primed to purchase Blu-ray players, as manufacturers began offering models at new low pricing levels in October. Originally $399 for much of this year, Sony and Samsung BD Live-ready models fell to $299 at the end of September. Regardless of a tightening economy, October set-top weekly sales are 25% to 50% higher than prior weeks, according to Marticorena. “We are encouraged about the momentum we are seeing with Blu-ray players in October,” she said. Overall, Marticorena is confident Dark Knight will shine bright on Blu-ray. “Given its release date timing and our research, this indicates that a lot of customers are waiting to purchase this title,” she said. “If a household is on the fence about making a Blu-ray player or PS3 purchase, this title can be influential in making that happen.” |
Yes, the recent Amazon promotion has sold 3 players to people I know. There are a lot of people waiting for players to get under $200.

Preordered the FS Blu-Ray Steelbook earlier today, woot. :D
Don't want to have to beat the rush on release day like Iron Man...which was sold out when I got there and I had to order online, so this time I'm just ordering online from the beginning to save the hunting time. |
Sounds like The Dark Knight will be the "killer-app" of Blu-Ray much like The Matrix was for DVD. I know I purchased a PS3 partially in anticipation of this title.
|
I posted this on another thread, but I thought this would be of interest for those who are still on the fence about getting a BD player. Dark Knight will be bundled with some hardware purchases, including PS3.
"Many of the Dark Knight discs, the trade publication said, will be bundled with hardware, including Blu-ray players and game devices. "If a household is on the fence about making a Blu-ray player or PS3 purchase, this title can be influential in making that happen," Warner Home Video's Dorinda Marticorena told Video Business. The Los Angeles Times reported on Friday that several major studios and consumer electronics firms plan to spend $25 million during the holiday season as part of their "Tru Blu" campaign to promote Blu-ray releases." |
Does anyone know if the Blu-Ray (w/BatPod) version will have a digital copy? I know the regular Blu-Ray has been advertised with a digital copy...

It's not that hard to believe actually. I got my Band of Brothers set a week, if not weeks early. Same goes for various other items I've bought from WHV. |

Someone mentioned on one of the other sites that they got Shawshank in already from the WB store. That is going to be released the week before TDK so anything is possible. |
That was me who got the shipping notice from WHV. It's not unusual to receive early from them (I got the Wire Season 5 a month before release), but for such a high-profile title, I wasn't expecting it. They sent it overnight, so I'll know Monday.
Thank you for shopping with WARNER HOME VIDEO. Your order confirmation number is XXXXXX. We have shipped your order for the following on 11/13/2008: ======================================================= QTY Item 1 Dark Knight, The: 3-disc Blu-Ray Blu-Ray 1 Star Wars: The Clone Wars (BD) Blu-Ray ======================================================= Your order was paid as follows: VISA $45.66 ======================================================= |

Finally got to see an IMAX presentation of this at the Smithsonian last night...and it is a totally different experience. One thing I wasn't aware of was that every aerial view of the city was shot in IMAX, so you would get amazing views that take up all of your vision. With the shifting ratios, I'll be looking forward to that feeling being at least partially emulated.

Cannot wait.

Has anyone been able to round up some substantial proof that FYE stores will be getting the BD Steelbook? We heard about it about a month or so ago and then nothing...

The steelbook is just for the standard 2-Disc, and to debunk another rumor, we don't have any listings for multiple steelbook covers (like we did for Transformers). |
I checked at FYE yesterday. No Steelbook for blu ray, but there is a steelbook for the dvd version.
Lame. |

It should be noted that Best Buy has two mysterious DK Blu-Ray entries up at $42.99 each.

Well, They use Bb as the code for the Bond steelbooks as well ...
I'll guess they are going to have two different covers. I hope they pick nice artwork! |
