We watched this last night in 1080p on my 55" SONY and it was fantastic. I didn't see anything odd, and there was plenty of detail. I saw the film twice in IMAX theaters and aside from a much smaller screen, this looked about as good as I can recall. Big thumbs up from me!

Hammer99 12-10-08 07:13 PM

Just watched this projected on the big screen (2nd time, after 1 theatrical, non-IMAX viewing), and really enjoyed it! Shifting ratios were pretty cool BUT the EE was very annoying on some (not all) of the 2.35:1 scenes, too bad.

PS3 here as well. If he didn't see it with a BD35 then it must be a player issue rather than my TV. I should see if it does it with my LG BH200. First I will try changing some settings on PS3. My PS3 is outputing 1080p/24 and I have a Sony 1080p/24 HDTV.

this post is for those who have got the batpod limited edition. is the case holding the discs pretty sturdy? and is it removable? better yet, do you have any close up pics of it? i'm a sucker for limited editions but an extra $20+ seems like a lot for a toy. i'm trying to decide between the batpod edition versus a best buy mask edition.

The Dark Knight first day BD Sales:

Sales of next-generation Blu-ray discs alone totaled 600,000 on the first day, leading Warner Brothers to project Blu-ray sales will total 1 million by Saturday.

edstein 12-10-08 09:12 PM

600,000 is a good number. 3 million total including DVDs. Still didn't come close to Halo 3 which sold 3.5 million and was over the double the price tag.

funny I don't remember when Halo 3 the movie was released?

apples/oranges

people saw TDK at the theater first and then many decided to own it
Halo 3 buyers didn't play it first in mass somewhere and then decide to own it out of the box... though some would argue they played it when they played Halo 1 and 2 ;)

You'd think with 634 posts in the thread someone would have mentioned that by now.

Oh, wait ...

The case is not sturdy. It's a notch below the Target Iron Man case...maybe a few notches now that I just compared them.

The case is removable.

I got my cousin a mask edition for Christmas but of course it's not open yet, so I can't comment other than the mask looks very cool and detailed.

I'm a sucker for 'limited' stuff as well, but if I could do it over I would get a Joker mask. The Batpod case does look very cool though...but I was just disappointed in how thin and unsecure the case feels.

JMcCraw 12-11-08 12:00 AM

Did Heath Ledger not speak to anyone with a camera on set?

thanks for the reply. i think i'll take another look at how the mask editions look before i make my final decision.

Is anyone having trouble with audio dropouts during the movie? The audio drops out during the bank heist scene, the scene where Joker detonates his jail bomb and also the hospital bomb scene. It's pretty annoying. For the record I'm using a 60gb PS3 and a Harmon/Kardon receiver.

JTH182 12-11-08 04:39 AM

I got my e-mail and RSVP'd for the BD-Live event on the 18th a little more than an hour ago! Woohoo!

Supermallet 12-11-08 05:18 AM

I also got an email, RSVP'd, and submitted three questions.

DarkestPhoenix 12-11-08 06:35 AM

Thank you, Mr. Nolan, for making a damn fine movie.

Fuck you, Mr. Nolan, for not including deleted scenes of a movie whose main villain died.

A pile of cinematic history left to rot be because of your own ego.

MBoyd 12-11-08 06:49 AM

I downloaded on iTunes and it has the shifting aspect ratio. I assume the digital download does as well since it just downloads from iTunes?

kinda disappointing sales. WAY more than 600k people watched the superbowl this year...

I was about to comment on this. Yes, the digital download disc does have the shifting aspect ratio. I just put it on my iPod. Cool I guess. Sad I go from watching this on a 6 story screen to a 1 1/2" one. But hey, it's all about content.....right? Sigh.....

rexinnih 12-11-08 07:42 AM

Nice to see the Dark Knight BD is projected to hit a million it's first week.

Pointyskull 12-11-08 07:46 AM

Watched it on BD last night on a 50" plasma, and I just don't get the issues some people are having with the transfer. Looked gorgeous to these eyes...

And the shifting aspect ratios - which sounds problematic - was barely noticeable, and that was probably because I consciously looking for it.

What are you talking about? He has, on several occasions, stated that there really is no extra material, there are no deleted scenes. Nolan is known for tight direction, there was no fat on this filet.

600k is an awesome first day number.

Kind of a disappointing economy to go along with it. With the way things are going right now I think that 600,000 was a good number for an infant format on day one. I know that people need to spend money for the economy to improve but many are scared to do it.

Am I the only one that got screwed and didn't get an e-mail from Warners? I've been signed up on the BD Live site since the weekend, but no e-mail last night/this morning. :(

GenPion 12-11-08 09:27 AM

I just registered for BD-Live. I hope I'm not too late to get an RSVP. Christopher Nolan has been one of my favorite film-makers for a long time.

I need to watch it on a smaller screen, but the aspect change was very noticeable on my 96" screen. I don't think the transfer is terrible, I just wanted the whole movie to look as good as the IMAX stuff.

Willh51 12-11-08 09:37 AM

I got the e-mail this morning and signed up, that should be pretty cool. I can't figure out exactly how it will look, because didn't the Hellboy screening just have you type in questions on the player and not online?

There is clearly going to be another release down the road, and surely more and more content will be added.

Relax.

I didn't get an email either. (Signed up yesterday- that certainly could be too late.)

^ I'm still waiting for the deleted scenes from Batman Begins, though...

Exactly. They are not going to put all their eggs in one basket. They have to hold something back for the eventual double dip.

Fortunately, I got the provided link from a person I work with and was able to sign up...the same link works with any account.

kefrank 12-11-08 01:01 PM

Was there a specific sign-up for the event or was it just the first XX people to sign up for a WB BD-Live account?

Willh51 12-11-08 01:05 PM

Also of note is that after you submit questions there's a screen saying there will be similar events for Body of Lies, Four Christmases, Watchmen and Gran Torino (thinking ahead I suppose).

Well, it certainly wasn't gorgeous. How far away do you sit? Is your set calibrated? The EE is noticable throughout the film and the 35mm parts looked poor at times.

Moopher 12-11-08 01:31 PM

I found that the movie looked fantastic, both times since i've brought it home, had literally no gripes at all in it's presentation. Watched it on my 50" Samsung through a PS3.

Same here. And I signed up for the BD-Live Dark Knight Christopher Nolan event! :)

It was all too noticeable on my 46", I can't even image what it looked like on people's 90"

I'm guessing everyone's experience is going to be different, for whatever reasons..
