This discussion has been tossed around plenty. Some folks think, it's just around the corner. Other say, maybe a decade. Some say, never.

I'm firmly in the never camp. I doubt it will ever be anything bigger than a big fat niche.

As many have said before, if its a niche, selection-wise, equal to laserdisc, I think everyone will be satisfied.

When the players are under $100, new releases are $14.99 and Walmart has a $5 Blu Ray Bin full of Catalog Titles.

Not everyone. You should look around the internet at other forums...some people think Blu-ray will be bigger then DVD and it will happen by the end of the year.

Laserdisc would be fine for me and most of us.

I just want movies I like at the highest quality possible and at a not-excessively-outrageous price. If all three of those things happen, I'll be happy. I don't care if Blu-ray ever goes really mass-market.

When someone wants to front me $2,500 for a Sony Bravia and $500 for a PS3/Blu-Ray player I'll consider giving up DVD's.

I might have considered that, but I don't like your attitude.

Why are there so many folks trolling the HD forum but have no HD equipment? I never looked at any of these treads until I got a PS3 not to mention posting silly borderline OT stuff like the above.

I've been poking around as I've been thinking of upgrading to blu-ray and have been distraught at the lack of decent equiptment. Also looking to upgrade my receiver, tv will be last.

Totally agree, right now consumers just upgraded. No way they're going to do it again so soon.

You summed it up best. As long as the quality movies are being churned out, I have no problem with BD being a complement to DVD. In fact I like the fact that buying Blu-ray is like an exclusive club. Let the commonfolk have their DVD!

I was gonna mention this.... just owning 100+ titles it already feels a little less special. But I suppose I'll take a hit on my ego if that leads to lower prices.

I get a disgusted look on my face when someone buys a DVD when a Blu-ray is available. Its like people buying brand new Xbox games for their Xbox 360.

DVD is killing it self by getting cheaper all the time last year profits form DVD fell which prompted Warner to back Blu-Ray only. This was the first major step in the major studios desire to move away from DVD to focus on Blu-Ray and not so long ago Warner made this even clearer with the news they where cutting back on theatrical releases to focus on Blu-Ray.

DVD over the next two years or so is in for a very hard time and i can't see DVD still going strong in 4 years with all that's happen over 2008 and what will continue to accelerate through 2009 and beyond a rapid change is on the horizon u should stop buying DVD s now if you are. I have i only rent the odd few when i have to.

A game doesn't stop being good just because it's old. There are plenty of Xbox games more worthy than most 360 games. 2600, old PC, board games too.

Back to the BluRay discussion, I disagree with the sentiment that BluRay is a huge technological leap that everyone will convert to. VHS to DVD was a huge leap. DVD to BluRay is not.

Most people don't care that much about 1080p graphics and 7.1 sound. Sure, it's nice, but joepublic will still use composite connections and have their state-of-the-art TVs set in fullscreen mode.

Also, for many, the story is the thing, not the resolution or surround sound. I watch a film for the story. A 5" black and white TV with a grainy VHS tape is just as good as a movie theater. (I prefer state of the art technology of course, but the story is the thing.)

1.You can't buy TV these days thats not HD
2.When Blu-Ray players hit below $100 dollars standalone DVD players will rapidly disappear as a Blu-Ray player is also a DVD player which will make a stand alone DVD player obsolete the major turning point as i see it which will happen by the end of 2010
3.Studios are losing money on DVD and will by 2009 be focusing more on Blu-Ray than DVD after the more than accept huge sales of The Dark Knight Iron man, Indian Jones will see Blu-Ray have a very merry Xmas.

1) Exactly my point above. Look at B&M stores' online inventory. They now carry maybe 3 models of SDTVs at MOST.
2) JoeSixPack will move to Blu-ray once this happens and probably not even care since his existing DVDs will still play in it - except look better! Once SD-DVDs start disappearing too, he'll start buying Blu-rays and not even realize the switch. Except for the media change, these same people were coerced into DVD from VHS the LAST TIME AROUND!
3) Agreed. Studios aren't stupid. WE ARE. I've already replaced several SD-DVDs with their Blu-ray counterparts simply because of the better quality. Left alone, I would never have double-dipped on titles like Goodfellas or The Untouchables as I was satisfied with the quality of those titles on SD-DVD. Now they've gotten me to double-dip! And I do it GLADLY!

Yep i see this all happening in 4 years and Blu-Ray is going to go on to be bigger than DVD and not be matched for anther 15-18 years by any another format as you can't see difference above 1080p the only way forward is holographic and those TV's don't start hitting stores till 2020 do the maths Blu-Ray is far more sound format to own movies then DVD s where just the beginning of something bigger and that is Blu-Ray.

And that automatically means that someone will buy a Blu-ray player? How about sticking with their old DVD player or *gasp* an upconverting player. Just because they buy a HDTV does not mean a Blu-ray player will follow.
How many HDTVs are sold in a week? Month? Year? You do know that right now there has not even been a million stand alone Blu-ray players sold...right?

They are? Now THIS I need to see. Please show me where DVDs are losing money for the studios. Last week consumers spent $123 MILLION on DVDs, and thats not including the ones studios sold to places like Blockbuster, Netflix, Hollywood Video, Red Box etc. Blu-ray sold $8 million.

No, they're not. They're making a ton of profit on DVD, often more than at the box office. DVD revenue is declining, but the profits are still pretty massive. Make no mistake, the studios want to fill in that declining revenue with Blu-ray sales, but making an obviously false statement like that will quickly cause you to lose credibility here.

I've never put someone on ignore, but the combination of fanboy ranting and incoherent sentences makes it tempting in this case. But then I'd miss the fun.

Welcome to the forum btw. We are very accepting overall. Follow the rules and have fun.
