When will Blu-ray hit "dvd" status?
I'm both an owner of an HD DVD player and Blu Ray player. As much as I try to buy as many movies as I can in high definition, I just can't do it any more. The selection at the moment is just too small, and awful.
It's sad to see older movies being re-released still onto DVD, and they won't even try for a blu-ray release. Is it because it costs too much money to produce high definition releases, or because there aren't enough blu ray owners, or both?
What year do you think blu-ray will be as popular as dvd releases? Or if it will happen at all.

I think the general consensus is that Blu-ray will always remain a niche market and if it ever does hit the same level of popularity as currently enjoyed by the DVD format, it will not be for several years more.

I receive several entertainment industry newsletters and, according to several pieces I've read recently, BR is approximately where DVD was at the same time in DVD's early years.
And... in about 4-6 years, projected to be where DVD is now.
Or so they say.

Once the cost of Blu-ray players and media drop in price, substantially, I can see it easily replacing DVD. Not with the wave of "replace your collection!" enthusiasm that DVD had, of course, but in terms of buying new movies? Once the price points get closer to converging, I don't see an issue, especially since BD is backwards compatible.
That said, who cares? As long as the growth and profit are there and the prices come down a bit, I'm not too concerned aboot it.

Eagerly waiting two certain posters to chime in on this thread.
Back on topic. Who knows if it will ever be as popular as DVD was/is. DVD took off like a storm after a few years. I would say player prices and software prices need to drop quite a bit before it does.

Once HDTV makes a more marked presentation in homes and people see what their sets can do with broadcast programming in comparison to how their standard DVDs are presented, I'm willing to bet Blu-ray will start taking off in earnest. By the time that happens, the player prices should be lower and there should be MANY more titles available than the paltry catalogue out there right now. So basically I'm saying there will have to be a "perfect storm" of all these things converging to surpass DVD.

Small selection? How many titles did you expect BD to offer up during the first 2 years? The same amount DVD offers, which took 10 years? There are over 500 titles released. How many of those aren't "awful"?

Blu-ray has outpaced DVD adoption
in 2012, sales of Blu-ray Discs will exceed those of standard DVDs
My guess is that as high-definition adoption accelerates, and as Blu-ray player and disc prices drop, Blu-ray sales will increase faster than expectations. Blu-ray movies are already priced cheaper than DVD was at the same point in its life. 2 years into DVD, everything was still priced at $20+ at retail. You never saw $10 and $15 DVD's at that time, but with BOGO and other sales, you're already seeing lots of major BD's at that price point, which will spur adoption faster than I think people are predicting.
The only thing that I see slowing it would be a long recession stunting the growth of the HD market.

When BD players can be purchased for less than $100 at Walmart and BD movies cost ~$15 when they hit the street. I'd give it 2-3 years, unless Sony really wants to milk it for all it is worth.
