To slightly expand on that... After his books became so popular, Ian Fleming tried to write an original screenplay for a James Bond movie. Because he wasn't a screenwriter by trade, he brought in Kevin McClory as a co-writer. They came up with the basic story together. The project eventually fell through, and Fleming decided to use the story as the basis for his novel Thunderball.

Later on, the Broccoli/Saltzman 007 movies were big business, and the producers tried to buy the rights to Thunderball. McClory wanted a cut of the action. They eventually settled on terms that would name him a co-producer of the movie, and he would retain film rights to the story (including limited use of the James Bond character).

Cut the to early '80s. McClory decided to stage a remake of Thunderball. He convinced Warner Bros. to produce it and somehow got Sean Connery to return to the role.

So that's how Never Say Never Again became a James Bond movie that wasn't really a James Bond movie.

It's not a scene for scene remake, just the general idea, so it's different enough. I'm starting to remember the parts that seemed off to me were the music just didn't seem like the Bond films we were used to and the actors portraying M and Q were so different that it was jarring to me. However, now that we've had the reboot those issues may not be so problematic for me. There are certainly some good scenes in the movie.

I am surprised that EON/MG/Sony didn't secure the rights to Blofield/SPECTRE/Etc when they made the deal with McClory. The only thing I can figure out is that since SPECTRE was basically Fleming's substitution for the Soviets, they figured they could just substitute in a new name. (And of course who knows how much McClory wanted for his hostage err...SPECTRE.) By naming it QUANTUM they were able to do a reboot without confusing the old timeline. If you think about it, CR and QOS are dealing with hot contemporary issues (terrorism and control of natural resources.) I don't think working in the existing constraints of SPECTRE would work as well as having the freedom of molding QUANTUM. Regardless, the last court case is amusing. Fleming created Bond in his novels and for McClory to try to claim credit for Bond 40 years after the fact shows how ridiculous he was. I don't think he gave a damn about the credit (despite what he'd have you believe) but rather saw a pot of money and wanted his cut.

Back on topic. I am curious. Do the standard def QOS releases come in keepcases or in crap(eco)cases?

A intresting side note is the second Thunderball remake he wanted to do in the late 90s early 2000's "WarHead 2000AD" was intended to Star Timothy Dalton in the role.

i had a nice surprise waiting for me at home the replacement bond steelbooks from amazon, these ones are in perfect shape. sent back the damaged ones earlier today,nice to see they took care of me so quickly.

on a side note has anyone heard if license or man with the golden gun will be getting steelbook treatment in may or is it still a mystery, i hope so it would suck to have only the regular cases for the remaining titles. i went ahead and bought the bestbuy boxset on tuesday but have held off opening hopeing to hear if amazon, or another retailer will be getting steelbooks for these two bonds.

What is recommended, going for the Blus at Target for $15 each, or the box sets? I have the first two volumes, and am not sure whether I should keep getting them in boxes, or individually. I read that the packaging of Volume 3 has changed...and not to mention the Best Buy exclusive...

I dislike the boxes because you can't rearrange the order of the films. I like to have mine in chronological order.

Picked up NSNA and LALD steelbook at Best Buy today. Pricematched Target and got 10% of the difference so each one was only $13.99. Also used the $5 DVD cash from QoS on Live and Let Die so it was really cheap.

i picked it up at Bestbuy last night for 29.99 plus tax, today took the target add to bestbuy got it price matched plus 10 percent of difference, total now 13.49 plus tax, i was refunded 17.86 instantly

Next time you can do it in 1 trip. Just purchase at the regular cash registers, then go directly over to customer service for the price match. Of course, maybe you already knew that and just didn't have the ad last night.

Rented "Live And Let Die" on Blu-Ray. Quite impressed with the transfer being that it is as old as I am (born in the same year). I think I'm going to rent the others starting with "Dr. No."

Has anyone gotten a copy of never Say Never Again that wasn't in a crap-case? I got the last one at Target this morning completely forgetting to check the case itself and when I got home learned that it was the half-a-case version.

Is it worth the tax to take the ones I just got back... not really.

yeah generally you would be correct with your suggestion.
But I did it that way because it was the day before the ad took effect, i know my local bestbuy, when target or frys has one of these 14.99 sales on popular titles, at open of the first day of the ad there are about 5 people(always the same ones) who try and snatch up all the copies at the matched prices, then turn around and resell them at the local swap meet or i would assume online also
and bestbuy only had 3 of these in stock when i went. and i wanted to make sure i had my copy of the movie.
